The real shame of this habit is that while the shooter is busy reviewing and editing what just happened, something else is actually happening which they are too distracted to capture. No matter how good

I've just removed this sentence from the article:

No matter how good a photographer you are, it is impossible to understand what you are doing well enough to not benefit from the information contained in the histogram.

What a load of digital photography revisionism. People have been taking well-exposed photos for probably over a century before digital cameras came along with their histograms. Histograms aren't always so useful for correct exposure anyway[1]. --Imroy (talk) 12:19, 28 February 2008 (UTC)

Written more and cleaned up

Some of the text is just plain ridiculous.

Do we really need this:

"Having several digital photographers together will result in group chimping either during or after the event they are shooting. This is similar to actual chimpanzee grooming, which is a social activity."

I've removed that sentence. It seems to be more like the author's attempt at humour than anything remotely encyclopaedic.

Elsewhere, I've added a tentative citation to the fact that experienced photographers seem to describe wannabe photographers ass chimping - and changed the wording in the process. I've edited other parts to improve the tone of the article.

It's very hard to find mentions of the term in places other than forums - which aren't a credible source. This is probably because the term hasn't really caught on outside the photography world, like other popular phrases have (e.g. LOL). If anyone has any credible sources please add them. - redandwhite90 (talk) 16:21, 28 May 2008 (UTC)

Hard to find other sources? Try Google Books. That's how I added two references. Just search on the term Chimping and photography. You'll get many references.LiPollis (talk) 06:10, 14 July 2009 (UTC)

The problem that I encountered was that the term seems to have been widely propogated by Wikipedia itself. Most 3rd partiy sources who provide a ref quote this article, making it an archetypical protologism. I've certainly heard it used but it's more a social phenomenon than a notable photographic term. At best it belongs in a pop culture section somewhere like photojournalist, but you might find substantial resistance to a merge. It deserves little more than a definition, in which case it probably belongs in wiktionary and certainly doesn't warrant an encyclopedia entry. --mikaul^talk 06:33, 14 July 2009 (UTC)
