Problem with this article

I appreciate the effort that went into creating this new page. However, I have some problems with it. I'll try to see if I can improve the article and I hope others will join in.

The main problem is that the article does not cite any references to support its definition of "Central San Diego." The author starts out, quite properly, listing and referencing the city website's definition of San Diego's "Central neighborhood".[1] But then they go on to define a different area as "central San Diego", without providing any support for the new definition; it seems to be just the author's opinion. A reference link is provided,[2] but it just goes to about.com, which is not a Reliable Source and in any case does not support the new definition. In fact none of the five references (six are listed, but about.com is listed twice) seem to support the definition of the area listed.

The area defined certainly is central, and it certainly is in San Diego, but that doesn't mean we can just arbitrarily decide to call it Central San Diego. Wikipedia always needs to have independent reliable sources to verify what is said in the article. We can't just decide what we want to call things or how we think they ought to be; everything we say has to be verifiable.

I'll encourage the author to tell us where they came up with this definition of the area; maybe we can find some sources to support it. --MelanieN (talk) 23:15, 4 August 2011 (UTC)

Looking through the WP:RSN archives I have to say About.com is suspect, as their articles range from experts within their field, to advocates for a particular POV within an issue that may or may not be an expert. I would suggest to the originating editor to back up about.com references with other reliable sources.

Thanks for the tag. Not only is about.com a sometimes unreliable source, but the about.com page cited does not support the novel definition of "Central San Diego" presented here (as opposed to the city's categorizing certain neighborhoods as "central san diego neighborhoods"). In fact none of the references support the novel definition. I could find no support for it in a Google search. I did find one news reference [3] which uses the term "east central San Diego" to describe a location outside of the city's defined area. It's probable that there is some common, casual use of the term in a broader sense than the city's narrow definition. But if we can't find any support for it except occasional anecdotal usage, I doubt if we can keep this article. --MelanieN (talk) 03:14, 12 August 2011 (UTC)

Converting page to a redirect

I am going to change this page to a redirect to Downtown San Diego, for which this might be a reasonable search term. This article is original research, unverified. It has been tagged as original research for almost a year. It has been discussed at this talk page, and notice placed on author's talk page without result. Author has provided no evidence that "Central San Diego" exists as an entity (as opposed to a casual term for the middle of a city), or that it has the boundaries and attributes described in the article. "Central San Diego" does not seem to be a verified geographic entity or concept. If someone objects to this redirect they can revert and I will be happy to discuss it here, but in the meantime I am going to boldly do it. --MelanieN (talk) 21:19, 8 July 2012 (UTC)
