AP math?

What does it mean AP math in 6th grade are the 11 year olds taking calculus? If AP is just what they call some of their higher level classes then it shouldn't say "Central is home to the A.P, or Advanced Placement program." Sean0987 (talk) 22:43, 7 May 2008 (UTC) Sean0987

This means that the 6th graders take 7th grade level math, 7th graders take 8th grade level math, etc. Also, the students get accelerated learning methods and more "deep" discussions. The article isn't very clear about this. There is a city-wide advanced placement program which selects students based on their scores on a standardized test administered in the fourth grade. In fifth grade, these students are bussed once a week to an "enrichment program". For sixth through eighth grade, they attend the AP program at Central, regardless of where in the city they live. The AP program is a sort of autonomous school-within-a-school, with its own divisions and curriculum. Since Quincy middle school students don't get to pick their classes (the curriculum is basically standardized citywide), there's no option to take, say, AP math, Honors English, and Standard Biology. It is possible to quit the AP program, however, or to enter it partway through middle school if the standard classes have failed to prove challenging to the student. Graduates of the Central AP program are encouraged to enroll in AP classes once they reach high school, but high school students select their own classes individually and are no longer obligated to take classes of a certain level.
