wife or daughter???

In the Italian version of this page is says that in an interview, Lucio Dalla said that he stayed at a hotel in Naples and they told him Caruso stayed there before he died and he was in love with a young music student he was teaching to sing - that is the explanation that I have also heard before; not this one that he is singing to his wife or child Orlando098 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 08:12, 14 February 2010 (UTC). There is (or was) a letter from Dalla in the restaurant by the hydrofoil terminal at Sorrento describing how he had heard the story of Caruso serenading the music student who (despite great pain) he had chosen to teach in the hotel that overlooks the port. He claims in the letter that the story was told to him by fishermen that, returning from fishing with their lights on, heard the music from the balcony and assembled underneath to listen (hence 'le luci in mezzo al mare'). My memory is a bit rusty (I read it about 14 years ago) and it may be a completely false explanation, but the letter was signed by Dalla - and it is a romantic story that I like think is a factual representation of how he came to dream up a beautiful song - even if it has been embellished a bit by the fishermen. Where was the song composed? Where is proof of Dalla's dedicating the song to a famous opera singer?

It is my understanding that Rai Italia showed an interview with Dalla, where he says that the song "came to him" while he and his private boat were awaiting the arrival of boat engine repairman while he was off the coast of Puglia.

Dalla composed a song which might resemble some of the "songs" in the opera La Boheme. Did he choose the title of his song, simply to have an "opera-sounding feel" ("Caruso" is the family name of a quite famous opera singer)? I am not convinced that he dedicated the song to the famed opera singer.

I have not found any reference to the 1988 TV miniseries " The Fortunate Pilgrim," starring Sophia Loren. Lucio Dalla wrote the score which includes "Caruso" both sung by Pavarotti and instrumentally as theme music.
