U. S. Coast Guard Unit Commendation

The 1967 commendation from the U. S. Coast Guard has nothing to do with the SS Manhattan transit. As the article mentions the SS Manhattan transit was in 1969.

The commendation was for assisting the damaged USCGC Northwind (WAGB-282) out of heavy ice north of Alaska during the periods stated in the article.

I know this because I was there. I was a crew member of the USCGC Staten Island (WAGB-278); a sister ship to the Northwind. We received a message that the Northwind was in trouble and requesting assistance working in heavy ice able to make only 100 yards each 24 hours. Our ship met up with the "Jonnie Mac" north of Alaska and started working our way north to met up with Northwind. The USCGC Glacier (WAGB-4) was sent north from Long Beach, CA to assist. The John A. MacDonald was an amazing ice breaker! We met up with the Northwind and shortly after the Glacier joined us and we escorted the Northwind into open water. I have poor quality pictures of this mission. Refer to the Wikipedia article on the Northwind which includes this rescue of the Northwind, but no mention of the commendation to the John A. Macdonald. The Staten Island received the same commendation, and I suspect the Glacier did too, but I'm not sure.

Somewhat comical is that shortly after the Glacier entered the ice we received a message that she was stuck, but before we broke off to help her she got herself out and was able to continue on her own. Probably due to her crew not used to the difference between Arctic and Antarctic ice. Glacier usually operated in the Antarctic.

Hi Sailor, Thanks for setting the record straight. You are absolutely correct. Corrections done. The CGUC was not mentioned in NORTHWIND article for brevity. JOHN A MAC DONALD is cross-referenced however, as is STATEN ISLAND. Please help with the article on STATEN ISLAND. Need help desperately, many Old Hands crossing the bar.
