The 'Directors' column has got to go

Including a 'Directors' column in a WP:FILMOGRAPHY table is totally non-standard – see for example Matthew McConaughey filmography, Morgan Freeman on screen and stage, Julia Roberts filmography, even Jennifer Lawrence, etc. (Yes, some WP:FL filmographies do include such a column, but they shouldn't, which is one of the reasons I don't fully trust the GA/FA process... Nearly all of the non-FL/FA versions of this do not include the 'Directors' column.) If people want to check the director of a film, there's a link right there for them to click on. In any case, it has nothing directly to do with the actor, and serves as nothing more than name dropping. The Directors column should be removed.

On the issue of "Year first" or "Title first" I have no opinion, as WP:FILMOGRAPHY explicitly allows for both. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 16:39, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

No, it is not non-standard. If we are going to list lists, here are some filmographies with director column, Meryl Streep on screen and stage and all filmographies listed in Portal:Bollywood/Featured content. Directors column can prove useful and really depends on the editor expanding/writing/creating the list. Also, FL/FAs are not for you to like, they are still considered among the best produced by Wikipedia and rightly so. – FrB.TG (talk) 17:52, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

No – GA/FA are processes that are generally controlled by a few editors, and don't necessarily have participants from the various projects like WP:FILM, WP:TV, and WP:FILMBIO, etc. IOW, what GA/FA participants view as "best practices" is not necessarily what the various WikiProjects view as "best practices". Inclusion of the 'Directors' column is an example of this – most of us on WP:FILMBIO consider the inclusion of the column (completely!) extraneous in actor Filmographies. I fully agree – "director" would only be relevant if you buy into the whole "auteur" theory which most of us do not (in fact, some of us view "auteur" theory as nonsense, esp. for a lot of the films that somebody like Bradley Cooper would be involved in). Bottom line: There are now two editors (myself, and Ebyabe) who object to the inclusion of this column. --IJBall (contribs • talk) 18:45, 26 March 2017 (UTC)

The usage of directors column is widespread. It would be uncalled for to remove that from one particular list. Perhaps a consensus against it should be achieved at, say WP:FILM, and then I would be comfortable removing it. – FrB.TG (talk) 19:34, 26 March 2017 (UTC)
