Volunteer Springs

edit

The Volunteer Springs located on present day Navajo Army Depot were known locally to shepherds and later railroad contractors. Walter J. Hill built the first house at Volunteer Springs in 1876. This was called the Volunteer Springs Ranch located a mile south of Bellemont. Hill was said to have holdings of 20 to 30 thousand head of sheep in the area. The Springs furnished water for steam locomotives with two water tanks being built at Volunteer on the newly constructed Atlantic & Pacific Railroad line in 1882. The name Volunteer was named for the California Volunteer Regiment that camped in the area in 1863. --SSW9389 (talk) 20:43, 2 July 2021 (UTC)Reply
