Was Beattie independent Labour or Northern Ireland Labour from 1943 to 1950? The wartime by-election truce did not extend to Northern Ireland and his shift to Irish Labour appears to have happened at the same time as the Belfast (all of part) branch's withdrawal from NILP in protest at its decision that it was pro Union. He was Northern Ireland Labour - sources that say "independent Labour" mean he wasn't an official candidate of the Great Britain Labour Party. Timrollpickering 18:28, 26 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

Adams disqualified

edit

Regarding this dispute about whether Adams was disqualifyed or resigned. The House of Commons Disqualification Act 1975 of the UK states that resigning from the UK Parliament is not possible. You have to have an office of profit under the Crown and be disqualified from it to leave. I'm sure Adams isn't that happy to be the Crown Steward and Bailiff of the Manor of Northstead and won't want to use it but I'm afraid that is what he is and it's the price he had to pay for leaving his constituents MP-less. Also this document from Parliament also says that resigning is not possible. The C of E. God Save The Queen! (talk) 13:21, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

He resigned, it's quite straightforward. That Parliament has some archaic procedure involving a legal fiction doesn't change that. You may also want to read articles in full before making edits that needlessly duplicate information. 2 lines of K303 14:09, 2 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
But that's the thing. Under law, resigning from Parliament is not allowable. Resigning and being appointed to an office that disqualifies you are different ideals. The C of E. God Save The Queen! (talk) 08:49, 3 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
