Talk:Banlieue

I found the translation to American English "the projects" useful, but rather than "the hood," would it be more sensible to say "the ghetto/barrio"? Otherwise this is an excellent and very helpful article. --SRR, December 2008

I would appriciate an explanation of the disambiguation Banlieu following upwards in the article!

I think the view point of view of this article appears to be non-neutral, in my opinion, so im going to put up a NPOV notice. Also, whoever typed banlieue to mean suburbs didn't appear to be looking in a dictionary, it means outskirts (i have changed it so) Medscin 18:07, 10 February 2006 (UTC)

I don't know any french, but I do know of a movie named "Banlieue 13", which, from the premise of that movie, it was a numbered neighborhood, so I would figure "banlieue" would be akin to "neighborhood" also? --Spektre1 07:55, 18 February 2006 (UTC)

"banlieue" is a real word, but it may not be spelled correctly. also i think it may mean "banishment." -Sticky Ballerina

NPOV dispute?

I don't understand why this article is in NPOV dispute. Exactly what part of the article is disputed? And can anyone briefly outline what the two or more differing views might be? Thanks. Squashy 13:55, 15 March 2006 (UTC)

-I'm a french teenager and I think that this article isn't good and I think it's subjective. I think so because the half part of this article is about "crime and unrest". Even if crimes are more important in banlieue than in other places of France, saying that it's the first characteristic is inaccurate. In addition, to associate banlieue with "Le Pen"; "Front National" and 2005 riots is unfair. This article don't tell you the other sides of french banlieues: -cultural aspect -historical aspect -social aspect... I think that american people have not a good and objective vision on France and the other way around. Governements give us a bad vision of our countries. They want us hating the other social organisations for controling us easier. this is my opinion and my point of view. they don't teach us the realities at school. So I request a NPOV. Suburbs in Britain

A suburb in the UK is simply an outer area of a metropolis. It doesn't have anything like the connotation it does in the States. Most suburbs of London for instance are not low density and are not readily categorised by class. Many have "good" and "bad" ends. The places that are cognate with American suburbs are generally considered to be separate towns, and we'd often call them "dormitory towns". Grace Note (talk) 02:57, 8 December 2007 (UTC)

The word "suburb" has a similar usage in Australia. In Melbourne, for example, many of the inner-city districts are called suburbs. It simply means "district" or "neighborhood". This usage appears to be similar to the usage of the word "banlieue". 71.56.234.142 (talk) 05:39, 25 January 2008 (UTC)

Connotations: No references at all

Every bit of the article that discusses the connotations of the word "suburbs" in "English", or rather the US, the UK, Australia and so forth as opposed to the connotations of the word banlieue in France is not sourced at all. This includes text that I edited and of course all the changes I made.

Perhaps, this aspect of the article would seem "obvious", but "obviously" it isn't. Reading the talk section above, it seems that this material was primarily written by US residents, who assumed, apparently in mistake, that was is true for the US is true for the rest of the Anglo-Saxon world.

I've tried to tone this down, but that in no way means that this does not need references.

Otherwise I'm afraid that most, if not all of this, is probably Original Research and could even arguably be taken to violate the Neutral Point of View policy.

I doubt anyone will be inclined to devote time to fix this (I'm not), but I thought I should at least point it out by a tag in the article and these few sentences here
