Split

Should this page be better split with Grupo Santander, ie group aspects on the Grupo page and the Spanish banking operations on this page in line with other locations around the world? Ian3055 18:29, 11 December 2005 (UTC)

Merger proposal

I'm going to change the direction of the proposed merger, the naming convention is that we follow the legal name of the firm which in this case is Banco Santander Central Hispano, so we'd end up essentially with the Grupo Santander article at the BSCH location with an introduction like:

Banco Santander Central Hispano SA (IBEX-35:SAN, {{lse|BNC}}, {{nyse|STD}}) also known as Grupo Santander and BSCH, is a....

As the Grupo article says it is only a marketing name, only going to highlight its lack of legal status. Ian3055 23:22, 18 August 2006 (UTC)

New brand and logo

Recently "Banco Santander Central Hispano" have changed their brand and logo. Now it is just "Santander":

Categories: "Companies of Spain" and "Spanish brands"

Please explain the removal of the category "companies of Spain". It is indeed a Spanish brand (the brand is "Santander"), but the company is "Grupo Santander", so this article qualifies to be categorized as "companies of Spain".--Karljoos (talk) 19:22, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Because articles should be placed in such categories only if there is not an appropriate subcategory. Quoting the template at the top of Category:Companies of Spain: "articles in this category should be moved to subcategories when appropriate... it should list very few, if any, article pages directly and should mainly contain subcategories". The appropriate subcategory in this case is Category:Banks of Spain, of which it is already a member. Gr1st (talk) 21:36, 6 August 2009 (UTC)

Employee count

Operations section notes 131,819, whereas the sidebar thing says 169,460 (2009). I wonder if the other items in Operations (customers, branches, shareholders) are also outdated. marp (talk) 11:24, 27 May 2010 (UTC)

References to "Mr Botin"

Who is this person? He crops up a few times in the first couple of paragraphs, but who he is (and what his role was) is never identified. Anyone? 84.92.8.221 (talk) 14:43, 1 December 2011 (UTC)

This struck me as well, though I found the answer in the sidebar, where the following is found: "Emilio Botín (Chairman)." Since the article should be readable without depending on the sidebar, this identification should be included in the main article the first time Mr. Botin is mentioned.--Sidbee2011 (talk) 05:59, 25 December 2011 (UTC)

Hi, I'm spanish but I like to read the english Wiki because I think it's better and has more content. Emilio Botín is the president of Grupo Santander. I see there is a request for this article to be moved to Banco Santander. As an alternative, can I suggest Banco Santander Central Hispano → Santander (Spanish bank) or similar, as well as Grupo Santander → Banco Santander? The current structure is a bit confusing. At the moment, we have two articles (Banco Santander Central Hispano and Grupo Santander) which are largely being used to describe the same thing - the actions and structure of the parent group, although the former is somewhat more Spain-oriented. As the Grupo Santander article is by far the longer, perhaps a more sensible path is to transfer the Abbey/recent history text from Banco Santander Central Hispano over to Grupo Santander. This would give two distinct articles, one on the parent (Grupo Santander → Banco Santander), another on the Spanish operation only (Banco Santander Central Hispano → Santander (Spanish bank)). • BNP Paribas and ING Group, have one single article without a separate article on the domestic retail activities. Only HSBC has a specific article on its UK activities HSBC Bank (Europe)). Currently there is no information in the two articles on Santander that is specific to the Spanish domestic activities, so I'm not sure a separate article is warranted. Madoff Investment Scandal

This is one of the categories but the source pertaining to this is of them being victimized as opposed to the rest of the category which were groups that helped perpetuate the scam. I will remove it on that grounds.--LedgerTom (talk) 20:59, 18 November 2015 (UTC)

Santander Group → Banco Santander – The official name of the banking group, as a company is Banco Santander S.A. (the holding company and the company that runs the bank in Spain are the same company). The main article of HSBC Group is HSBC, as the ultimate parent company called HSBC Holding, with SUBSIDARIES The Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation (aka HSBC or less common, Hong Kong Bank) and HSBC Bank (Europe) (aka HSBC Bank plc). Same case in Barclays (Barclays plc; Barclays Bank plc) and RBS (Royal Bank of Scotland Group plc and Royal Bank of Scotland plc)

I knew Banco Santander Central Hispano may different from Banco Santander, but it just confusing to have three of more article for the parent company, the whole group and the subsidiaries. Which at least Banco Santander and Santander Group should be merged. Matthew_hk tc 19:34, 14 April 2016 (UTC)

• Support - I think the best title of all, would be the common name, which is simply Santander. However, since we have to disambiguate against the Spanish city of the same name, it's probably best to use natural disambiguation, which would be the full name of the listed company representing the group, i.e. Banco Santander. Note that the target was recently converted from an article to a redirect, but that was in line with the move discussion above anyway, it was decided not to have separate articles for the Spanish bank and the group.  — Amakuru (talk) 07:34, 22 April 2016 (UTC)

It can have a article with a name Banco Santander (Spanish domestic network), or Banco Santander (Spanish domestic division) which matching the Spanish article es:Banco Santander, but so far the article history of Banco Santander and Banco Santander Central Hispano, were not quite about the domestic branch but M&A. Is the name of this article correct?

Shouldn't this article be called Grupo Santander or Santander Group? It's more about the group than any one bank, and there already is a Santander Bank article, for the former Sovereign Bank owned by Santander Group. Timtempleton (talk) 17:23, 3 April 2017 (UTC)
