COI edits edit

From time to time, this article gets conflict of interest edits from Baker Botts employees. I'd encourage such persons to read WP:COI, WP:RS, WP:V and WP:NPOV before attempting to improve the article. I'd also suggest they post significant content changes here for review by neutral editors, rather than directly into the article. Trivial fixes (spelling, formatting) and vandalism repair directly on the article are also welcome. Studerby 18:34, 30 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

I am an employee of Baker Botts. I would like to update the information in this article to show that there are around 730 lawyers, not the 700 indictated in the article. I would also like to list the cities where Baker Botts has offices and the 6 departments that make up the firm. I don't see this as a conflict of interest. Are those additions possible? 204.194.98.34 16:31, 31 July 2007 (UTC)Reply

Surely. Write what you think is appropriate on this talk page, and supply reliable sources (for this article, for these purposes, the Baker Botts web site is considered a reliable source, as are standard law directories). If it's appropriately neutral in tone and non-promotional, we'll get it in the main article... The previous version of the material was too much of a "directory of services"; remember that you're writing for an encyclopedia article for a general audience, not a promo item for someone looking for legal services. when it became Baker Botts edit

In the article it says that [quote:]

In 2000, the firm renamed itself Baker Botts .

In my opinion, a change to that sentence should be considered, because I seem to recall that the firm was referred to as "Baker Botts", at least informally, *way* before 2000. The reference given as the authority for the statement quoted above, is http://www.bakerbotts.com/about/history/, -- a "history" page from the firm's web site. That is fine, except that this "history" page does not say that the name was something other than "Baker Botts" prior to the year 2000. What it does say, is that [quote:] "The name continued to change slightly throughout the decades until 2000, when the official name became Baker Botts L.L.P.". The change that took place at that time (2000), may have been something minor, such as the addition of the suffix "L.L.P." to the name "Baker Botts". This would fit in with the info in my next paragraph; and if it is true, then the above quote (in a blue "dotted line" box) is off base -- at best, misleading.

Many Houston residents can probably remember, (without even having to consult old newspapers and magazines, letters, stationery, and statements of billable hours, etc.) whether or not the firm did already have the name "Baker Botts" way before the year 2000. My brother, David Schwartz, worked for the firm, (mostly during the 1980s), and I do not remember it being called anything other than "Baker Botts" when he worked there. --Mike Schwartz (talk) 01:01, 7 October 2008 (UTC)Reply

Client and office lists edit

Both seemed trivial for an encyclopedia entry so I've removed them. Every page of the firm's website lists all the offices, and I summarized the client list into "more than half of the Fortune 100 companies" in the opening paragraph (taken from the firm's website verbatim). If anyone disagrees, of course, I'm more than happy to discuss it. JohnHarris (talk) 12:03, 21 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Notable partners and employees edit

Another editor has added a partner who has been found in contempt of court as a "notable partner". This partner has no coverage in reliable sources per WP:GNG and WP:BLP. The editor has refused to respond to queries on his or her user page, deleting my attempts to communicate with him or her. I am removing this partner from the list of notable partners as the only sources provided are primary sources. This addition fails WP:NOR and WP:BLP and potentially exposes Wikipedia to legal risks. If we listed every lawyer who has been censored by the courts or a bar association Wikipedia would be full of non-notable lawyers. Please do not add anyone to the list of notable partners and employees unless that person is sufficiently notable to warrant their own page. Pburka (talk) 02:36, 26 July 2012 (UTC)Reply

Few lawyers have ever been in the position that this man is in. Not only contempt, but also Criminal Perjury Extortion Evesdropping. These documents are filed on Pacer in the US Federal Courts and he is under investigation for his criminal conduct in California. The court filed documents are in upon themselves enough to substantiate notability within WP:BLP. I am going to revert your edits. --WPPilot 04:31, 26 July 2012 (UTC)
a) We don't (normally) use primary sources like that on Wikipedia b) the standard on pretty much every other article for inclusion in a "notable" list is the existence of a Wikipedia article on the person. We keep to that standard here as well. No bio article = no inclusion here. Get a bio article on the guy (and it survives review by other editors as a valid article), and inclusion here would be fine and non-controversial. Do things in the proper order please. 2021 Suggested Updates edit

I work for Baker Botts and wanted to suggest some basic edits to the page to ensure accuracy:

  • Infobox - we actually now have 13 offices, not 14 -- can this update be made?[1]
  • Infobox - since this current version was posted some time ago, we have changed our major practice areas. Can that section of the Infobox be updated to the following: Antitrust and Competition, Bankruptcy and Restructuring, Corporate, Energy, Environmental, Global Projects, Intellectual Property, Litigation, Real Estate, Renewables, Tax, Technology[2]
  • Infobox - can our Managing Partner, John W. Martin, be added?[3]
  • First paragraph, second sentence - can "Technology" be added after the word energy (in reference to the types of clients we have)?[4] Background -- In 2020, 39% of the firm’s revenue came from the technology sectors and 35% in energy.[5]

These look basic/factual/appropriate. I will make some of these Ellaby12 (talk) 19:05, 21 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

  • In the History section, in the 6th paragraph, the page notes that the firm renamed itself. After that, can this be added? "In 2019, John W. Martin was elected managing partner of the firm. Based in the Palo Alto office, Martin became Baker Botts’ first managing partner based outside of Texas."[6]
  • In the History section, can a short 7th paragraph be added: "Baker Botts has long been active in community service and pro bono efforts. The firm provided legal support for victims of Hurricane Harvey in 2017 and responded to the COVID crisis with the publication of a COVID-19 Community Resource Guide."[7]
  • Under "Notable Partners and Employees," can Rebeca Huddle be added? She is a former partner and current Justice of the Supreme Court of Texas

Same here BBx2021 looks ok, will add w/ slight language updates to remove any tone of bias Ellaby12 (talk) 19:08, 21 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Thank you Ellaby12, I understand your feedback.BBx2021 (talk) 00:09, 24 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

Would you consider adding the following section after "History"? Other law firm pages have one similar:

Awards and Recognitions

Baker Botts has been recognized by Diversity Lab for two straight years as “Mansfield Certified Plus.” The “Certified Plus” status signifies that the firm not only considered at least 30% women, people of color, LGBTQ and disabled lawyers for leadership positions and in lateral recruiting over the last year, but also achieved representation of at least 30% women and diverse lawyers in several key areas – including significant leadership roles, inclusion in formal pitches, lateral recruitment, and equity partner promotions and representation.[8]

In April 2020, Baker Botts earned 10 Band-1 practice group rankings in Chambers USA, three more than in 2019. The Band-1 rankings were for practices that included Environmental, Global Projects, Intellectual Property, Litigation, Real Estate and Tax.[9]

In May 2020, the firm was named to The National Law Journal’s 2020 “Pro Bono Hot List” for the second straight year.[10]

In August 2020, the firm was ranked the No. 1 legal advisor for global oil & gas M&A deals, by number of deals, for the first half of 2020, according to GlobalData.[11]

In November 2020, Baker Botts was named to the National Law Journal’s “Appellate Hot List” for the second straight year.[12]

In January 2021, the firm was named an “Energy Practice of the Year” by Law360 for the second straight year.[13]

In January 2021, the firm was named “Texas Litigation Practice Group of the Year” by The American Lawyer for the second straight year.[14]

These can be added but I will need to revise them to remove any hint of promotional language, for example, by removing the word "straight" from any reference to winning an award for the "second straight year" Ellaby12 (talk) 18:10, 26 March 2021 (UTC)Reply

OK thank you BBx2021 (talk) 20:29, 29 March 2021 (UTC)Reply
