Plot details?

This is a 3 hr movie with an impressive cast. Is it possible to get something more than generic plot summary? Ok, it's about the transition in Hollywood between silent films and talkies. What else? There needs to be more details to grab audiences and get them excited. The response shouldn't be, wait for the trailer. I'm sure the movie trailer will be generic too. Plus, the release date is 12/25/22. Right in time for award season. Budget

The Hollywood Reporter said the film "$83.4 million in qualified spending"[1] so if that is the amount that was eligible for tax breaks the total amount spent was likely considerably more than that. Yet the article claims the budget for this film was only $78 million?[2] Weird.

The article previously said the budget was $110 million[3] but I am having difficulty finding the relevant part of the text within the long PDF. I not yet tracked down the edit that deleted this figure. An edit by User:Wheezythewave removed the higher figure with the edit summary "Source updated". From the edit history it seemed as if the PDF was saying $110 (although I haven't found where exactly) and Variety was saying $78 (and still says it). It is not clear why the $110 million budget figure was deleted.

Mixed or Polarized Reviews

The film does not have positive reviews. Any sentences that states “The film received generally positive reviews” in the consensus sentence must be deleted.

The film has received mixed/polarizing reviews from critics (given its Rotten Tomatoes score of 55%). The sentence must say either “the film polarized critics” or “the film received mixed reviews from critics” Marvelguy2321 (talk) 23:05, 26 December 2022 (UTC)

In addition, there is no consensus that the screenplay and direction were generally praised. It is obviously polarized as some reviewers praise Chazelle, while others are critical of him.

Therefore, “divided on screenplay, direction,” is correct. A statement that states one (screenplay or direction) is praised but not criticized or vice versa should be removed. Marvelguy23 (talk) 17:52, 1 January 2023 (UTC)

Box office gross in the lead

User:Rocafellla, why do you keep changing how the gross is written in the lead? For example here you've changed the gross from "$30.8 million" to "over $30 million". Here you changed the gross from "$28.4 million" to "$28 million".

Since this film is a bomb, it'll be more appropriate to give a more precise number, in order to give a sense of the loss on the film to the reader. Besides not every film article uses the same way of writing the gross in the lead. Roman Reigns Fanboy (talk) 19:01, 26 January 2023 (UTC)

On the length of the Plot section

Please note that MOS:FILMPLOT says, with emphasis added:

Plot summaries for feature films should be between 400 and 700 words. The summary should not exceed the range unless the film's structure is unconventional, such as with non-linear storylines, or unless the plot is too complicated to summarize in this range.

This film, at 189 minutes, is exceptionally long, and involves many plot lines, so a plot summary greater than 700 words is not unreasonable in this case. Further, I believe that 700 words is a reasonable goal, but simply reverting every editor who adds words by reference to the FILMPLOT guideline will not achieve us the best plot summary in the long term. (Also note MOS is guideline, not policy, as one IP editor claimed.)

Unnecessary line in plot

I don't want to create an edit war. There is a line I think should be removed, signified in bold.

Manny helps carry away young actress Jane Thornton, who overdosed on drugs during a urolagniac act with sizable actor Orville Pickwick.

The plot is already at a heavy 699 word, and I just find this detail to be rather unnecessary given Orville is never mentioned in the plot again, and the sex act having no significance; the only significance to the plot was Jane overdosing so Neille gets the part. Agreed. If it is not vital to the understanding to the plot, remove it. MOS:FILMPLOT plainly states: The plot summary is an overview of the film's main events, so avoid minutiae like dialogue, scene-by-scene breakdowns, individual jokes, and technical detail. Mike Allen 19:43, 9 March 2023 (UTC)

Cause/location of Nellie's death

In response to this edit, the verbatim newspaper clip from the film says: "Nellie LaRoy, a vivacious presence who graced the silver screen towards the end of the silent film period, was found dead in a run-down Hollywood apartment yesterday. Police have released a preliminary report stating that no foul play is suspected. Sources have indicated her untimely passing yesterday was likely the results of an accidental overdose." There is no mention of a hotel room despite what "the Internet says". What's canon is what appears on-screen in the film. --Shivertimbers433 (talk) 23:55, 22 July 2023 (UTC)
