Coningham and the Cap Arcona

User:Wallie's addition of the link to the Cap Arcona events seems suspect to me. First of all the site cites wikipedia as it's only source, but it makes no mention of Arthur Coningham. Who are these 'Some [who] hold him responsible for the sinking of...'? And for a statement like 'and is often considered an atrocity..', the cited website is a long way from being a reliable source (despite its description as 'the Cap Arcona inquiry', it has really nothing to do with any official enquiry. (It reads like one man's blog pieced together from what he's read on wikipedia). Linking Coningham's command of RAF Second Tactical Air Force as proving personal culpability for this specific operation needs a reliable source, as at the moment it smells a lot like original research. The Cap Arcona if carrying prisoners should have been clearly marked as-such, that would have made the non-combatant nature of the vessel clear to anyone, and as a result the Typhoons would probably have left it alone.

Arthur Coningham (cricketer)

The present article does not gel with some of the references cited in the article about the cricketer of the same name. Was Arthur Coningham (cricketer) indeed the father of Arthur Coningham (RAF officer)? If so then I'd have thought it worth mentioning in the article, but perhaps there is some misinformation happening somewhere. Obviously the biography of Air Marshal Sir Arthur Coningham would be the gold standard reference, and I presume was used in the writing of the article. Both Orange's biography, and the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography say he was indeed the son of the cricketer, so I've brought this article into line. I don't know where the father's name as being Samuel came from. David Underdown (talk) 13:56, 9 February 2009 (UTC)

Nickname

I have in my possession a copy of Bernard Montgomery's memoirs (written in 1958) in which he thrice refers to "Maori" Coningham (pp256-7) so it appears the corruption to "Mary" was not universal. Johnmc2 (talk) 05:21, 12 August 2010 (UTC)

Page 19 of Orange's biography states:

"It was during his service with 32 Squadron that Coningham found himself a new name. Leonard Rochford (a famous pilot in No. 3 (Naval) Squadron) recalled that Coningham was always known as 'Mary', a nickname worn down from the original 'Maori', given him because he was from New Zealand, but Rochford once heard Coningham tell someone that he was called Mary because his mother had wanted a girl. However, Christopher Musgrave, a New Zealand friend, later claimed that the name was given while Coningham was convalescing in a Cairo hospital in 1915. He was discovered by a fellow-patient sharing cocoa and kisses with a nurse, Mary Steele of Auckland, in an office at the end of the ward. On returning to his bed, he was met with a chorus of 'Connie loves Mary' and somehow he became 'Mary'. Whatever the truth may be, the fact remains that for reasons best known to himself he wanted to be called Mary and made sure that his friends knew this; except for official purposes, he never again answered to 'Arthur'" John Prattley (talk) 04:01, 4 May 2022 (UTC)
