Remembering Professor Bennett at Brigham Young University edit

What a great time it was in the class of Dr Bennett.

I was at BYU (after my LDS mission) from 1962 to 1965 and was in Dr Bennett's class on 'genealogy'. One time I got the laughs of classmates when Dr Bennett was teaching how to enter a relationship on forms (regards to myself and Charles B Petty — I am his namesake) and he said, "What is your relationship to Charles B Petty?" And I said, "grandfather" instead of "grandson". That would be reminiscent of the Michael J Fox movie, "Back to the Future". —Preceding unsigned comment added by Charles Edwin Shipp (talkcontribs) 13:17, 9 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

I realize that 'Discussion' section is about how the Article is going, and not about Dr Bennett — but this was to start 'talk' and maybe it will generate improvements in this excellent Article in some way. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 13:21, 9 June 2010 (UTC)Reply

Editing and Article Corrections edit

I am on the 'verge' of making my first correction in the Article. It seems to be an obvious omission of one letter, 'e'. The original sentence, as it stands contains the words: "returned to Canada he taught school for on year" which in my humble opinion [imho] should read "returned to Canada he taught school for one year". If it is OK with everyone, I'm making the change today. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Charles Edwin Shipp (talkcontribs) 11:54, 4 July 2010 (UTC) Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 11:58, 4 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

I've added a reference [1] on the first sentence of the Article, but don't know how to add to "Ref-List". . . . Help .!. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 12:06, 20 August 2010 (UTC) And TNKS! {As I read the WP suggestions to new editors, it says to add the relevant information and a more senior editor can assist.} I am eager to learn this little detail because it will help me in other articles also. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 12:06, 20 August 2010 (UTC) Thanks Again !!!Reply

Within eight hours, ARERANS made improvements in the Article and added a simple word to properly include Ref. 1. What we learn (by Arerans's example) is this: at the bottom of the Reference section, add "reflist" enclosed in double braces. That's it! So that becomes the last line under References, and before External Links. Finding Dr Bennett's birth date in one of his honors, I have add the info to the second paragraph entitled "Early LIfe" including that he lived 69 years. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 23:07, 29 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

The hymn he wrote with Alexander Schreiner is in the current hymnbook, FYI. Is it enough to find that from adding double-brackets [ "x" ] around Alexander Schreiner since there is a Wikipedia article for the composer? Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 02:45, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

As of today, we need a volunteer, "Please help improve [the Article] by rewriting it in an encyclopedic style. (March 2011)". Who can do this? I don't have the encyclopedic talent. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 21:52, 28 March 2011 (UTC)Reply

I made a first pass at cleanup and wikification of this article, including removing deadwood, pruning back hagiographic content, and moving material around to where it makes more sense. A good deal of text was removed, but the article appears to be the better for it; however more work is needed if this article is every to meet good article standards. -- 208.81.184.4 (talk) 23:29, 31 March 2011 (UTC)Reply
I suppose the deleted material can be found in other sources. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 00:55, 14 January 2012 (UTC)Reply

The writing style reflected in this article edit

There is a tag from 2011 about the non-encyclopedic style of this article, to wit: "This article is written like a personal reflection or essay" which, in my opinion, is justified due to the nature of the work of Archibald F. Bennett. He was the pioneer of computerized 'personal reflections and essays' in family histories! After the rewrite to make it more 'encyclopedic', the tag(s) could probably now be removed; however, I suggest they remain as a reminder that the personalized style is a good thing, in some instances. We are advised as editors in Wikipedia to be bold—does this include being imaginative and creative? Perhaps, to some extent.

Perhaps, the best of both extremes can be achieved in the middle. Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 16:40, 3 February 2013 (UTC)Reply

Time to remove the tags edit

I hope you don't mind, but I intend to remove the tags about the article being of a personal style and lacking encyclopedic tone. It has been cleaned up substantially since they were added, and I found the tags to be a time waste as I looked for ways to improve the article. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Davemc0 (talkcontribs) 16:20, 5 December 2019 (UTC)Reply

Portrait-picture edit

A picture of Dr Bennett would greatly improve this article, IMHO -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 12:29, 6 December 2014 (UTC) -- in my humble opinion.Reply

Other pages edit

FYI, I've added his name here: Archibald_(name)#People_with_the_given_name -- Charles Edwin Shipp (talk) 12:40, 6 December 2014 (UTC)Reply
