NOT the first lager brewery in the UK edit

The Anglo-Bavarian was NOT the first lager brewery in the UK, despite many people claiming it was, and there is no evidence it ever brewed lager at all. See here. Unfortunately that's my original research, so I can't update this page. Perhaps someone else would like to do the job … Zythophile (talk) 11:40, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for your comment, however I think this is one of those debates where semantic discussion & definitions will never be agreed. The definition of lager may not be the same in all the different uses. I note the BBC, to which the claim is cited, describe the Shepton site as "Britain's first lager brewery". Looking at your blog entry (which you are right can not be cited as a Reliable source) doesn't cite references. Presumably you have documentary evidence which could be cited?— Rod talk 13:29, 7 May 2011 (UTC)Reply
You're asking me to prove the Anglo-Bavarian DIDN'T brew lager - I suggest it's up to someone to prove it DID, because, believe me, there IS no evidence it did, and it's nothing to do with any idea that "The definition of lager may not be the same in all the different uses." I really don't think relying on the BBC writing 130 years or so after the fact is good enough evidence - it's simply hearsay by the BBC - and the article really ought to say something on the lines of "sometimes claimed to be the first lager brewery in Britain, although brewing historians have been unable to find evidence to back this up". You are welcome to edit the article along those lines, however I would suggest the BBC reference is kept as it is generally considered that the BBC counts as a Reliable source. It would be really useful to also add a reference to where brewing historians say they can't find any evidence.— Rod talk 14:48, 9 July 2011 (UTC)Reply

OK, I have finally added two references to original sources that suggest strongly the Anglo-Bavarian was NOT brewing lager. (And I have asked for citations for the claim that it was). Zythophile (talk) 06:19, 4 October 2012 (UTC)Reply

I have added references to the pages in Davis's book where he makes the claim that the brewery was producing lager. I don't know which is right, so I would suggest that the article will just have to refer to both sides of the argument - I have therefore changed the lead para so that it says that "the evidence is disputed" rather than "there is no evidence". I don't want to get into a war about this, but David, the evidence over whether the Anglo-Bavarian every produced lager is NOT "disputed", THERE IS NO EVIDENCE. The claim is disputed, and I have altered "evidence" to "claim", which seems to me to be reasonable. Zythophile (talk) 06:05, 7 February 2013 (UTC)Reply
