Right-wing advocacy
editThe 1965-10-20 issue of the NYT reports that Izvestia accused Mertes of acting as an agent of Opus Dei following his report to the group, though that he denied the accusation.
Still, the german article mentions that he was the founding chair of the organization's Studentische Kulturgemeinschaft in 1953.
Other mentions of Mertes in the English-language press seem to be mostly referencing his advocacy for first-use nuclear attacks and keeping the statute of limitations in effect for Nazi war crimes ("We cannot bow to the ignorance of the American public"), and concerns for "communist infiltration" of the Catholic church post-Vatican II.
All of this is in striking contrast to the picture painted in the article, which reads like a friendly obituary for a generic civil servant. 2600:1700:E4C0:40C0:7852:3625:4E42:1EA0 (talk) 18:24, 3 November 2024 (UTC)
