Cleanup

It seems to me that this page should say something about the number of full-time faculty members especially the number who are actively performing research. Active researchers are more current on new developments than teaching-only faculty. Further, the number of faculty says something about depth and specialty. /s/Mac 16 Jun 2009

I made a start at cleaning up this page (from this to this), but 2hiyup2 has reverted with an instruction that I discuss it first.

1. External links. WP:EL#Links normally to be avoided is quite clear in that blogs should be avoided; the link to a forthcoming conference adds nothing to the article, and is mere linkspam. These links have no place in a Wikipedia article, and I have removed them again.
2. Partner Universities: the article is not improved by a list of fifty plus institutions that the MBS has links with. A short statement is quite sufficient. Wikipedia is not an indiscriminate collection of information
3. Notable alumni. Consensus is that notable alumni are generally limted to those with Wikipedia articles, see (eg) WikiProject Universities. Of the twenty-plus notable alumni in the current article, only eight are not redlinks or misdirects. Some of the redlinks we can discuss (eg Don Cruickshank), but not all of them. The links of some (eg UMIST) alumni to MBS seems fairly tenuous to me, and the WP style is to prefer prose to a list (see eg Cornell_University#Alumni), but we can be eventualists on those.

The article isn't very good to start with, but 2hiyup2's perferred version is moving in the direction od a promotional piece rather than an encyclopedia article. The article needs improving along the lines suggested in WP:UNI. Mr Stephen 21:41, 20 May 2007 (UTC)

Hi Stephen,

1. I agree on this point. external links to blogs are not necessary (I haven't seen them at first)
2. Maybe you are right. however, it might be helpful to see the the university's connections, other schools, for instance Warwick, include their list of deans, degree programmes, subject groups and research centres. Would that be better?
3. Disagree on that point. Notable alumni should not be limited to those with wikipedia articles, rather it should encourage to add new articles. Regarding the style, other UK unis/business schools have a list of notable alumnis too, with a similar style (e.g.: London Business School)

Is this about MBS or MBS/MBA

I agree it is not good to start with. I have begun to change some of the content to reflect more accurately that MBS is a full service school, and that the MBA is only a small, but very important part of its activity. Much of what is written previously conflates MBA and MBS, so for example rankings that apply to the MBA are given to the school. Still underrepresented here is the extensive, and highly ranked undergraduate activity, and the outstanding research profile.

Sorry, also to add MBS is not a University, it is a department in a University, so parallels in content and structure don't apply. It is of a status to merit its own entry though, no doubt about that, cf London Business School which is considered the closest equivalent.

Do the numbers in this paragraph refer to the School or the MBA; and what do they actually refer to, eg international experience. Maybe there should be a seperate section for MBA, Undergrad, Taught Masters etc?

The school was recently ranked among the top 25 business schools in the world for the second time for its MBA program, and 2nd in the world for its doctoral program [1]. It is placed 9th in Europe and 4th in the UK, while being 5th in the world for international business and 4th in Europe for percentage salary increase of its graduates. Regarding international experience, MBS is 6th in the world and 1st in the UK as well as is ranked in the world's top 13 for the career progress of its alumni. The average salary of Manchester's MBA graduates is US$ 108,615 - one of the highest of European business schools. I have also reverted back the 5A/5C categorizations. They imply a very significant difference in terms of % staff who are researching.

Is this a serious page or just a plug for MBS MBA Programs

there is some deleting/reverting going on between myself and 2hiyup2. Let me explain what I have been trying to do, and the perhaps it will make sense. Issue One. As it stands in my and 2Hiyup2 versions there is a recognition that what exists now is called the "New" Manchester Business School; that is, it is a completely new entity formed on the merger of UMIST and Victoria University of Manchester in 2005. Anything that refers to the predeccessor partners then rightly belongs in the history section. Hence my moving of the "grand old man" reference to MBS (which, btw, is sexist, and can't be justified as a contemporary usage) to the history section. I have also been trying to balance out the mentions of the "old" MBS and the other partners; so, if the establishment of MBS in the 1960s is to be mentioned then so should the Dept of Industrial Administration at UMIST in the 1920s, which is in the UMIST wikipedia entry.

Issue 2. Elsewhere, I have been trying to balance out the dominating reference to the MBA program it runs with what the range of what school actually does. The nature of immigration status of MBA alumni is a piece of microtrivia, for example. This is especially while the full range of taught programmes is not listed, and the attention paid to research is minimal.

There are comparator wikipedia entries which might give an idea of how an encyclopedia article for a business school might look, as something measured and thorough, rather than as a barely concealed advertorial plug - in the UK see LBS or Lancaster University Management School. Readers should know(and you get a hint of this from the UMIST entry) that there are, shall we say, contested priorities within the school about what its most important aspects are. What this entry should aim for, I would suggest, is balanced and objective representation.

I just came to the talk page to see if the issue of the foundation date of the UMIST D.I.A. I would like to see the intro paragraph say what merged to form it and when those were founded, very much like the University of Manchester article. Then the details are in the history. See also School of Mathematics, University of Manchester which is a fairly well developed article on a School of the University. First MBA programme

The source cited seems to just verify that London and Manchester were expanded as a result of Franks and does not establish the first place to start an MBA programme in the UK. Another source does mention postgraduate degrees n Business Administratioin but that does not imply MBA.Billlion (talk) 06:01, 28 July 2008 (UTC)

The School was renamed in recognition of the generous donation and his long standing support of The University of Manchester and the business school.

The first round of Alliance Strategic Funding has been allocated to research projects including: the new Health Services Research Centre; a new Manchester Institute for Research on Work and Employment; offering advanced training opportunities to PhD students and contributing to the Northern Powerhouse debate.

Lord Alliance is one of the North West’s most successful businessmen, he founded the international textile group Coats Viyella Plc (now Coats Plc) and currently serves as Non-Executive Director of Manchester based N Brown Group, one of the UK’s leading internet and catalogue home shopping companies.

Hi Andy. Unfortunately, I must decline the requested edit at this time. First, your proposed edits do not meet Wikipedia's neutral point of view policy in that they have a clear bias in favor of Lord Alliance's donation. As for the name change, Wikipedia's guideline on article titles is to use whatever name is most commonly used to refer to an institution, not necessarily the official name. Since this name change was finalized barely a month ago, I'd like to see some evidence that "Alliance Manchester Business School" is more frequently used by the general public than "Manchester Business School." Following my earlier failed request (see Sept 24) I have amended the changes requested as below. Can these be made?

I was advised that changing the name of the page to 'Alliance Manchester Business School' and the logo to the one here (which includes Alliance) was not possible as the rule is to use the most commonly used name. To call the school MBS and not AMBS is now factually incorrect however, and I would have thought fact would come before usage. Please advise.

Would it be possible to add the below to the history section of the page?

As for the naming issue, our policy on names reads: "If, on the other hand, a significant majority of sources written after the name change is announced continue to use the "old" name, Wikipedia should continue to do so as well." I did a Google News search and found "Manchester Business School" was much more commonly mentioned than "Alliance Manchester Business School." If you disagree with this assessment, you can seek a second opinion at Wikipedia:Requested Moves. The logo: I would not object to updating the logo.
