Brothels edit

My additions ref taverns, bear-pits and brothels come from http://www.litencyc.com/php/speople.php?rec=true&UID=89. FWIW, when I was at the school almost 30 years ago, the drama society was called the Bear Pit. No idea if it still is. Strangely, dear old Edward's role of brothel-keeper is omitted from official stuff put out by the school :-) Please don't think this is malicious -- I have very fond memories of the place -- but this detail shouldn't be glossed over. UrsusMaximus 22:05, 20 December 2005 (UTC). Absolutely true - I was there forty years ago, headed the Cadet Force in the early seventies. I've upgraded the extra-curricular activities section to include the theatrical tradition and the birth of the National Youth Theatre movement from the English department in 1956. Other less prominent pupil thespians were Jeff Sirr, who has a filmography of around twenty films and TV shows, and Bob "Tank" Yetzes, who played Piggy in the first film release of Lord of the Flies, and also appeared in If.. . Jeff went on to a flourishing career in insurance, and is currently with Munich Reinsurance.Reply

The foundation edit

The bit at the top about the foundation is misleading. It says that Alleyns was founded "along with" Dulwich College and JAGs, it was originally founded in 1619 as the "College of Gods Gift" - which became commonl known as "dulwich college". JAGS was founded as seperate entity in 1747, and Dulwich College was split under the Dulwich College Act of 1857; the "A" stream became Dulwich College, and moved to the new site slightly further south, whilst the "B" stream remained in the Old College Buildings becoming Alleyns later, Consequently I am reworking this section to make it less ambiguous. Rugby edit

Interesting to hear the reason behind our playing soccer and not rugby. I imagine few who were not at Alleyn's during our brief dalliance with the game will know about the rugby/chaplain/blackboard duster episode, so here it is! UrsusMaximus 21:15, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Apologies for not filling in the "Edit summary" ... at the resolution I use, it's just off the bottom of my screen!UrsusMaximus 21:18, 22 January 2006 (UTC)Reply

Structure to the article edit

I propose the following structure. Over the next few days I will try and implement this, unless I face opposition. Please make your thoughts known *before* I do this, if possible! Thanks.

Please note a few things: only the first word of a heading should be capitalised unless it's a proper name; headers should never use a single = sign; headers shouldn't really be introduced unless there's something to put under them (they can always be added later); some things really are of limited interest and don't belong in an encyclopaedia - this includes such things as names of staff (except the headmaster) and pupils, and also very detailed information about curriculum, activities, results etc. Otherwise we are in danger of having a prospectus, not an encyclopaedia article. -- Necrothesp 23:46, 2 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

N.B. Changed School colours to White Red and Navy, Blazers etc. are currently Navy not Black so this information is correct even if Black used to be the colour. Ellie —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.1.109.181 (talk) 13:22, 3 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

School plays and drama at Alleyn's edit

Some information should be given about plays etc. at Alleyn's. How it is going to change with the addition of the new theatre. Thanks, Umbuntu 15:13, 19 January 2007 (UTC)Reply

Please remember that this is not an intranet or prospectus for the school. Only information that is of interest to non-pupils should be included. -- Necrothesp 16:44, 19 January 2007 (UTC)Reply
This is important in the history of the modern theatre - the Bear Pit is thought to date back to Shakespeare's company and was the root of the entire National Youth Theatre movement, via the detachment of the Head of English, Michael Brook, in 1956. In the 1960s, something like half the NYT were either current or past Alleyns pupils - as were the audience of Top of the Pops! This is why so many thespians are in the alumni list. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 80.201.73.25 (talk) 01:28, 7 December 2008 (UTC)Reply

Klaxons + Alleyn's? edit

172.189.63.34 13:10, 2 October 2007 (UTC) says: is there any connection between the Klaxons and Alleyn's - one of them being an old boy or something?Reply

No there is no connection, just as there is no connection between Alleyn's and various other people here claimed to be ex-pupils, like Jason Kay. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 91.106.155.21 (talk) 23:25, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

What we call former pupils edit

Currently, the article says "Alleyn Old Boys". This was true when the school was all-male ("Old Alleynian" having been pinched by Dulwich College), but I can't imagine the term is still used. Or is it? The Edward Alleyn Society website speaks of alumni, which isn't much help. Anyone able to shed light? --UrsusMaximus (talk) 19:39, 26 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

They're called Old Boys and Old Girls in speeches and (for instance) in the 2007 Yearbook. JoshHolloway 19:35, 27 December 2007 (UTC)Reply

Freemasons edit

Apparently the school is one of many to be connected with Freemasons. If so, this deserves a mention, previous heads have come from Freemasons schools and the Saddler's company is run by Freemasons. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.129.105.11 (talk) 18:02, 23 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

There has definitely been involvement: Sherlock used to partake in meetings in the Hall, and the Saddlers are indeed heavily involved. BrianPiss (talk) 15:48, 5 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

When I was at the school 5 years ago lodge meetings were listed in the calendar, and certain member of staff always wore a masons tie pin, I questioned various members of staff about the schools involvement with the masons and questions were always asiduously ignored, I suspect that it is not something that the school would wish to be highlighted, and therefore it should be, can anybody shed light on the matter?! Ellie (Browns '06) —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.1.109.181 (talk) 13:18, 3 April 2010 (UTC)Reply

Pupils are too young to join, but there is a lodge among the alumni. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.28.177.223 (talk) 23:58, 28 December 2011 (UTC)Reply

Epidemics at Alleyn's edit

I think perhaps the flu section could become part of a section about outbreaks of germs at the school but I am not sure that any of the known victims caught it at the school. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 87.80.103.44 (talk) 19:43, 7 May 2009 (UTC)Reply

Roy Hodgson edit

Perhaps mention Roy Hodgson was once a PE teacher [1] at the school. Camayoc (talk) 19:27, 4 January 2013 (UTC)Reply
