Australian publisher, 1990–present [was untitled] edit

To be honest, starting this article with the Australian company seems a little "Australo-centric". Given the historical significance of the company, surely it would be better to start the article with something like: "Allen and Unwin was a major UK publishing firm....blah blah. The name Allen and Unwin is now owned by the Australian company blah blah". It is very disconcerting to follow a link to George Allen and Unwin and be redirected to a page about an Australian publisher! Bathrobe 08:26, 31 October 2006 (UTC)Reply

  • Bathrobe is absolutely right. ——Chalk19 (talk) 06:34, 14 February 2018 (UTC)Reply
Hear, hear! (near 16, 7, and 4+ years later)
It's better here now, by recent wholesale rewrite of the lead paragraph alone: revised May 2020 by User:Deagol2. --P64 (talk) 01:20, 23 April 2022 (UTC)Reply

Allen & Unwin ; George Russell & Unwin – in all languages edit

The problem is (continued with new heading):
Wikidata-item for this article, there as "Allen & Unwin" [1], is a mix (, with simply headquarters Sydney for instance. But inter-language Wikilinks are managed thru that page, and a dozen XX.wiki publishing company articles thus link here. The German de:George Allen & Unwin covers the Australian in one-third of one sentence.

Die Leitung des 1976 gegründeten australischen Zweigs von Allen & Unwin erwarb 1990 die Mehrheit am Imprint Allen & Unwin von HarperCollins und existiert seither als unabhängiger Verlag in Australien und Neuseeland. [and exists since as an independent publisher in Australia and NZ]

Frysk (West Frisian) fy:Allen & Unwin is a shorter article that features the Australian company; with some information about the British ancestor, who is prominent in the brief lead. Only Frysk fy:George Allen & Unwin covers the British publisher in a separate article. That is, only FY.wiki covers the two publishers on separate pages, with proper sorting so that I can find them via Wikidata. It's the unique XX.wiki article with Wikidata-item "George Russell & Unwin" [2](really?) (inception 1976; founded by US American-football coach George Allen). It's interlanguage link to our article[here] is manual. That is, it's locally curated, not managed via Wikidata "Allen & Unwin"; see the very last line of the latter FY article.

Let me recap: Only the West Frisian wikipeditors have figured out what we are doing and managed to keep up ;--)

I think the best solution would be to create separate articles for the British and Australian entities, with suitable wikidata for each. Deagol2 (talk) 07:54, 23 April 2022 (UTC)Reply
