the claim in this article that "having just two weeks before the games broken the 880y world record by running 1:57.8" is not true. the real facts are these. one week before the Olympic Games he had won the AAA 880 yard Championship in 1:57.8. on that date, Alfred Tysoe's best time for 880 yards was the 1:55.6 he ran at Manchester on 11 September 1897. the AAA Championship best performance was 1:55 1/4 run by Edgar Bredin (London AC) at Northampton Cricket Ground on 1 July 1893. the British record was 1:54.6 by Frank Cross (Oxford Un.) at a Wadham College Strangers race in Oxford on 9 March 1888, and the world record was 1:53.4 by Charles Kilpatrick (New York AC), set in the New York Athletic Club vs London AC match at New York on 21 September 1891.
