Virtual Museum of the City of San Francisco says the facilities at Treasure Island became San Francisco International Airport in 1941. It became Treasure Island Naval Station in 1942. So a building erected in 1939 must have been for the airport. Right? --BjKa (talk) 11:56, 23 April 2018 (UTC)Reply
Yes, it was built in the New Deal primarily as an airline terminal. My understanding from the sources (like Panam.org) is that in 1935 they were building new deal stuff and planning for a worlds fair, part of which would inclue Pan Am moving its flying boats from Alemeda to the new Treasure Island. And it was built thinking that flying boats would still be a thing, so that the building was built as a permanent airline terminal. But then things happen not as planned. Maybe the boats stayed there until 1941, when the navy leased the whole thing. Then in 1942 the Navy took full control. And also by then the City of San Francisco had built an airport at the water's edge for wheeled planes. Then WWII makes rapid progress on wheeled planes and pressurized cabins so that by the time the war ends, everything is going land-based KevinCuddeback (talk) 17:07, 8 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
