This article says:

    The refinery was largely destroyed in September 1980 by Iraq during the
    initial stages of the Iraqi invasion of Iran's Khuzestan province, triggering
    the Iran–Iraq War.[citation needed]

Is the citation needed for the part that says "the refinery was largely destroyed in September 1980 by Iraq during the initial stages of the Iraqi invasion" or is the citation needed for the part that says "triggering the Iran-Iraq War"? If it is the latter, that phrase can be removed. The basic information would still be there, but the extra specificity, without a citation, would be gone.
