Friendly Matches

Should we also include a separate section for the friendly matches that will occur alongside the play-off matches? I wouldn't transclude the friendly section anywhere since they don't count toward qualification, but they are specifically mentioned in FIFA's announcements and are included in the schedule. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 19:31, 21 September 2022 (UTC)

I feel that there should be no removal of such content until the current Move Request is resolved. If it is successful, then the friendlies need to stay for sure, as they are part of that overall Play-off Tournament, where a subset of that tournament is for the World Cup qualification.Matilda Maniac (talk) 13:05, 21 October 2022 (UTC)

Think they should stay regardless of the move request outcomes. These friendlies are considered part of the tournament by FIFA and included in the official program and schedule. Seany91 (talk) 13:25, 25 October 2022 (UTC)

• Oppose per Jkudlick. To have a consistent naming scheme throughout the various sections/rounds of qualifying, we do not necessarily follow the officially branded name. The European section of men's World Cup qualifying is branded as the "European Qualifiers", while the Asian section is similarly branded as the "Asian Qualifiers", though we use a parenthetical title to maintain consistency. Re: GiantSnowman's point, the European section of qualifying also features play-offs, so excluding "inter-confederation" makes the title somewhat ambiguous. S.A.   There are previous editions of World Cup qualifying where we do use the terminology you propose, e.g. 1998 FIFA World Cup qualification (AFC–OFC play-off), but that was because there was only one play-off match. Since 2002, there have been two, but we have used "(inter-confederation play-offs)" as a single article with each match also having its own article, e.g. 2002 FIFA World Cup qualification (inter-confederation play-offs). In this particular case, each play-off group has teams from three or four confederations. "AFC-CAF-UEFA play-off," "CAF-CONCACAF-CONMEBOL play-off," and "AFC-CONCACAF-CONMEBOL-OFC play-off" are too unwieldy to be usable article titles. Future editions of the FIFA World Cup will include a qualification playoff tournament consisting of six teams from five confederations for two spots in the final tournament, so the term "inter-confederation play-offs" would continue to work for those tournaments. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 19:45, 17 October 2022 (UTC)

Squads

Pinging @Jkudlick and Matilda Maniac, since you have both contributed to this article: As FIFA consider this to be one of their tournaments (not just a standard qualifying round), they have published the official squads lists ([1] [2]). @S.A. Julio and Matilda Maniac: I believe this is unprecedented, as this seems to be the first "World Cup Play-off Tournament" ever. Since this is officially a FIFA tournament and not merely a play-off or qualification round, I am leaning towards a separate article, as well as including the squad lists for Argentina and New Zealand. Perhaps "2023 FIFA Women's World Cup Play-off Tournament squads" – I find "2023 FIFA Women's World Cup qualification (inter-confederation play-offs) squads" far too cumbersome. Perhaps we could also revisit the failed RM from October, as I now find it far more compelling to rename this article and it would make sense for the titles to match. — Jkudlick ⚓ (talk) 21:46, 12 February 2023 (UTC)

@Jkudlick: Yeah, the parenthetical title makes titling a squad article awkward. I'm somewhat indifferent on the title of the play-off article, though if it is moved, the capitalization used in most sources should be used per MOS:CAPS (either "Play-Off Tournament", "Play-off Tournament" or "play-off tournament").
