recent changes edit

Am I the only one who doesn't understand Bebo71 (talk · contribs)'s two recent changes here and here? It seems as though he's re-purposing the article to discuss only the qualification phase. Walter Görlitz (talk) 20:59, 29 November 2018 (UTC)Reply

And not the Champions League, but for the Europa League... Maybe not vandalism, more disruptive and a WP:CIR issue. S.A. Julio (talk) 21:26, 29 November 2018 (UTC)Reply
With more changes recently, I think it is most likely a CIR issue, a long term consistent CIR issue, unfortunately. Equineducklings (talk) 20:27, 1 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello. Salzburg will not be now in the 2nd pot, check it. Bayer is the team with the lowest CC now to be in the 2nd pot. (But soon, when Shakhtar of Ukraine will be champion, Bayer too will be only in the 3rd pot maximum). May 19, 2019. Pyunik edit

Pyunik has been qualified for the 1st Qualifying Round of UEFA Champions League because Ararat-Armenia failed to pass 3-year rule. 31.0.125.63 (talk) 18:19, 24 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Wrong. The three year rule doesn’t outright deny teams from participating, UEFA can allow new teams to participate if they want to. This is mentioned in the regulations (in a different rule that just refers to the three year rule actually) and has been the case lots of times in history.

They are 100% eligible to participate, altough they could be denied at any point. However the same could be said of any club from the access list, hopefully you see my point2A00:CC47:30D2:E200:D00D:3F94:750:9049 (talk) 17:37, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Seedings in the qualifying rounds edit

I'm a bit puzzled as to why some of the seedings in our qualifying sections are already shown as guaranteed. For instance, in the third qualifying round league path, the winner of the second qualifying round involving FC Basel is listed as to be a certain seed in the third round. But as far as I can see that is simply not true. Surely, if Basel were to be eliminated by say İstanbul Başakşehir, the latter, with a Club Coëfficiënt of only 10.500 will not be seeded and Olympiacos (or if they are eliminated in the second round as well Club Brugge) would be the seeded Club in the third round league path, no?Tvx1 12:53, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Same as this season, the draw for QR3 takes place just before the QR2 matches, therefore it would be Basel v an unseeded team as a seed in the QR3 draw. If Basel were to be eliminated then that unseeded team would instead play against Olympiacos/Brugge/PSV/Krasnodar in QR3. Boothy m (talk) 13:06, 28 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

Clubs' names edit

This is a Wikipedia page in English. It means that the names of the clubs sould be presented like English speakers as used to them.

So, Walter Görlitz (talk · contribs) undid my contribution to name LASK Linz to "just" LASK without any reference. I ask you, what is your opinion about it?

I had show valid arguments. Let's be coherent (examples):

  • Should you change Zenit Saint Petersburg to "just" Zenit?
  • Should you change Bayern Munchen to "just" Bayern?
  • Should you change Lille to LOSC? (in France people call this club only LOSC)

And so on.

I also did my research: in English news, LASK Linz is referred as LASK Linz and not "just" LASK. I give you 3 examples of English media naming the team as LASK Linz:

It appears as though the partnership has dissolved and your blogs are not reliable sources. UEFA calls them LASK in short and tables, but
LASK Linz as their full name: https://www.uefa.com/teamsandplayers/teams/club=63405/profile/index.html https://www.uefa.com/uefaeuropaleague/season=2019/clubs/club=63405/ Others may want to comment. Walter Görlitz (talk) 06:51, 31 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
So, you are saying that the correct name, displayed on UEFA's official page is LASK Linz. Thank you for saying that I'm right! User:Rodri24 (talk) 06:58, 31 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
Dailymail is a blog and not reliable source? You made me laugh. Please others comment this. Rodri24 (talk) 07:03, 31 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
It seems that LASK Linz is used a lot in the media and can be qualified as a common name. No one has a problem with AZ Alkmaar or HJK Helsinki, right? It's exactly the same sutuation.--BlameRuiner (talk) 07:53, 31 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
It's not quite true that "no one" has a problem with those clubs' names. AZ Alkmaar has been moved to AZ (football club) several times (correctly, IMO), and HJK Helsinki is actually already at Helsingin Jalkapalloklubi (piped here to HJK, not HJK Helsinki). – PeeJay 09:30, 31 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
@Rodri24:, I did not mean to imply that DailyMail.co.uk was a blog, simply an unreliable source. I was in a rush and heading to bed so I did not respond fully. I'm sorry for being imprecise and causing confusion. Not many publications have a Wikipedia-level redirect on the project, but WP:DAILYMAIL does. It's just not a reliable source.
And to answer the question you asked in your edit summary, no, we would not simply call Bayern Munich only Bayern or only Munich because that would be ambiguous as there are several teams with the state (Bayern or Bavaria) in their name and at least two with the city in their name. We wouldn't use your transliterated "Bayern Muenchen" or the correct endonym, "Bayern München", as this is the English project and there's an exonym for it. Walter Görlitz (talk) 14:43, 31 May 2019 (UTC)Reply
I would go with LASK Linz. Common name and never heard just LASK on Sky Sports Austria... But since i'm not Austrian, ican't be sure. Kante4 (talk) 11:56, 2 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
And again, no, UEFA uses both variants so they're of little help. Walter Görlitz (talk) 12:07, 2 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
So, I think it is clear that LASK Linz is recommended, including users from Austria. I'm going to change according to this. Thank you everybody who answered! Rodri24 (talk) 19:23, 6 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
I think you're simply wrong. Do not change it. Look at all the reasons provided here and let a neutral editor summarize. Walter Görlitz (talk) 19:47, 6 June 2019 (UTC)Reply
You did change it! You were the only one saying it... You're simply wrong. Rodri24 (talk) 18:50, 1 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
I am? What does it say now? Walter Görlitz (talk) 17:21, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Creating the 2019–20 UEFA Champions League qualifying phase and play-off round edit

Because it is only 6 days for the draw for premiary round so I want to create this page. Thanks 14.232.160.139 (talk) 01:07, 5 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Here it is: 2019–20 UEFA Champions League qualifying phase and play-off round. Chanheigeorge (talk) 19:59, 6 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Qualifying rounds divided by groups edit

I think last season, teams were divided by groups so the seeding is not true 14.232.160.139 (talk) 10:33, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

The draw groups are for convenience of the draw only. We do not know the draw groups until UEFA announce them, but a team that is seeded in a draw without groups will remain seeded in a draw with groups, so the seeding is correct. Chanheigeorge (talk) 14:36, 7 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Third Qualifying Round edit

Am I missing something here? "The third qualifying round is split into two separate sections: Champions Path (for league champions) and League Path (for league non-champions). The losers from the Champions Path enter the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League play-off round, while the losers from the League Path enter the 2019–20 UEFA Europa League group stage." Why would the losers of the Champions Path have to play a further two fixtures in the Europa League playoff round before potentially qualifying to the EL. While the losers of League Path enter the Europa League directly? Essentially, so if you finish first in your league such as PAOK, but lose in the CL at this stage you have another playoff for the EL, but finish 2nd such as Olympiakos and go straight in. Xenomorph1984 (talk) 20:25, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

No, you're right. From what I remmember same system was used last season as well. What can you do, just another retarded decision by UEFA. Nightfall87 (talk) 20:32, 31 July 2019 (UTC)Reply
Yes, although in your example Olympiakos had to win in the second qualifying round to get into that position. I think the reason for this is the changes to the access list in 2018-19 mean that only two clubs now progress from the league path to the group stage, instead of five in 2017-18. So it was probably a concession to the countries outside the top 4, that means those ranked 5-11 are guaranteed EL group stage participation for their runners-up. Boothy m (talk) 10:43, 2 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Manchester City edit

Are they allowed to participate now? --134.176.64.128 (talk) 06:15, 2 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I think UEFA just swept the whole matter under the rug. Nothing has been heard about the case for about two months, which suggests to me that they don't intend to kick City out any time soon. – PeeJay 09:11, 2 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Flag icons edit

Does anyone have any idea why some country flag icons cannot be retrieved by the commands 'fbaicon' and 'flagicon'? (Greece, Romania, Turkey, Ukraine) Finedelledanze (talk) 10:47, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Because they have changed over time. For instance, Template:Country data Greece. Walter Görlitz (talk) 14:30, 27 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Valencia edit

Forgive me if I'm missing something obvious - but if Valencia are assured at least a Europa League spot when they're third, why aren't Chelsea and Ajax? I feel like this could do with clarification for the less educated like myself. 77.99.89.230 (talk) 10:55, 14 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Because the main tie breaker is head to head points and Valencia have played both games against the bottom club whereas Ajax and Chelsea haven't. Valencia are 6 points ahead of the bottom team Lille and have played both games against them, winning 4-1 and drawing 1-1. Even if Valencia lose their last two games and Lille win their last two, Valencia still goes through on head to head. In contrast, both Ajax and Chelsea still have to play Lille and if the latter win both games and Ajax/Chelsea lose their game against Valencia, Lille could mathematically overtake Ajax/Chelsea. Minutes played discrepancy with source edit

In the stats section, Robert Lewandowski is listed as having played 550 minutes when UEFA claims 527. In fact, this ~20 minute discrepancy exists for most players. Why? Benica11 (talk) 23:33, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Appears to have come from this edit: [[1]] which changed the source to one that uses a different method of counting minutes. The change of source has been reverted, the minute count has not been. We're gonna have to choose a source and ensure the table matches it. Benica11 (talk) 23:45, 26 February 2020 (UTC)Reply

Atalanta v Valencia edit

Bergamo, where Atalanta are based, is probably the worst place hit by the Covid-19 outbreak in the world. Many experts now think that the Atalanta v Valencia champions league game was directly responsible for setting off a biological bomb which led to these devastating events. I think this should be noted on this page, but this would be very non standard content, so thought I'd raise it here first for thoughts on how best to approach this. https://www.si.com/soccer/2020/03/25/atalanta-valencia-coronavirus-champions-league-san-siro-milan-italy Jopal22 (talk) 02:23, 26 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Same thing on the Liverpool Athletico match, I believe there is a study into it. Interesting theory in terms of spread, so maybe more relevant to COVID 19 than here, as I can't really see how to frame it in a relevant way specific to this competition unless you are have a source stating that UEFA were reckless for not making a decision to postpone games and for allowing complete rounds (e.g. matchday 21 not all of the last 16 complete etc) of matches to happen. Lewandowski assists edit

Lewandowski should have 4 assists (2 v Chelsea at home and 2 v Chelsea away). — Preceding unsigned comment added by NutteLarsson59 (talkcontribs) 21:46, 8 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Barcelona edit

According to the statics, Barcelona has lost 2 games in the last 10 games. Despite Barcelona Bayern Munich is leading every cup, that they play — Preceding unsigned comment added by 188.253.236.16 (talk) 06:33, 14 August 2020 (UTC)Reply

Group A edit

I don't know how to fix this but someone has changed the Group A teams to Kithendu, Kauthulini, Muthesya, Kaukuni in the group table. Hopefully someone can fix this! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cowsaidmoo (talkcontribs) 06:31, 28 November 2020 (UTC)Reply
