Wikipedia and copyright edit

Hello Jopal22, and welcome to Wikipedia. All or some of your addition(s) to Premier League Parachute and Solidarity Payments have been removed, as they appear to have added copyrighted material without evidence of permission from the copyright holder. While we appreciate your contributions to Wikipedia, there are certain things you must keep in mind about using information from sources to avoid copyright and plagiarism issues here.

  • You can only copy/translate a small amount of a source, and you must mark what you take as a direct quotation with double quotation marks (") and cite the source using an inline citation. You can read about this at Wikipedia:Non-free content in the sections on "text". See also Help:Referencing for beginners, for how to cite sources here.
  • Aside from limited quotation, you must put all information in your own words and structure, in proper paraphrase. Following the source's words too closely can create copyright problems, so it is not permitted here; see Wikipedia:Close paraphrasing. (There is a college-level introduction to paraphrase, with examples, hosted by the Online Writing Lab of Purdue.) Even when using your own words, you are still, however, asked to cite your sources to verify the information and to demonstrate that the content is not original research.
  • Our primary policy on using copyrighted content is Wikipedia:Copyrights. You may also want to review Wikipedia:Copy-paste.
  • If you own the copyright to the source you want to copy or are a legally designated agent, you may be able to license that text so that we can publish it here. Understand, though, that unlike many other sites, where a person can license their content for use there and retain non-free ownership, that is not possible at Wikipedia. Rather, the release of content must be irrevocable, to the world, into the public domain (PD) or under a suitably-free and compatible copyright license. Such a release must be done in a verifiable manner, so that the authority of the person purporting to release the copyright is evidenced. See Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials.
  • In very rare cases (that is, for sources that are PD or compatibly licensed) it may be possible to include greater portions of a source text. However, please seek help at Wikipedia:Media copyright questions, the help desk or the Teahouse before adding such content to the article. 99.9% of sources may not be added in this way, so it is necessary to seek confirmation first. If you do confirm that a source is public domain or compatibly licensed, you will still need to provide full attribution; see Wikipedia:Plagiarism for the steps you need to follow.
  • Also note that Wikipedia articles may not be copied or translated without attribution. If you want to copy or translate from another Wikipedia project or article, you must follow the copyright attribution steps in Wikipedia:Translation#How to translate. See also Wikipedia:Copying within Wikipedia.

It's very important that contributors understand and follow these practices, as policy requires that people who persistently do not must be blocked from editing. If you have any questions about this, you are welcome to leave me a message on my talk page. Thank you. — Diannaa 🍁 (talk) 14:35, 25 August 2018 (UTC)Reply

Thanks for the Open Championship History section. I know how tricky these are. I rewrote the World Snooker Championship#History a few years ago; took me weeks and weeks. Nigej (talk) 19:54, 7 January 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited The Open Championship, you added a link pointing to the disambiguation page Turnberry (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Hi, I'm RonBot, a script that checks new non-free file uploads. I have found that the subject image that you recently uploaded was more than 5% in excess of the Non-free content guideline size of 100,000 pixels. I have tagged the image for a standard reduction, which (for jpg/gif/png/svg files) normally happens within a day. Please check the reduced image, and make sure that the image is not excessively corrupted. Other files will be added to Category:Wikipedia non-free file size reduction requests for manual processing. There is a full seven-day period before the original oversized image will be hidden; during that time you might want to consider editing the original image yourself (perhaps an initial crop to allow a smaller reduction or none at all). A formula for the calculation of the desired size can be found at WP:Image resolution, along with instructions on how to tag the image in the rare cases that it requires an oversized image (typically about 0.2% of non-free uploads are tagged as necessarily oversized). Please contact the bot owner if you have any questions, or you can ask them at Wikipedia talk:Non-free content. See User:RonBot for info on how to not get these messages. Because an individual match is very often traditionally recognised by the cover of its programme. A Premier League season is not typically recognised by the cover art for its season review on iTunes. – PeeJay 19:56, 6 May 2019 (UTC)Reply

2019 Women's British Open moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, 2019 Women's British Open, does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Brexit Party One-issue label edit

I was looking at the Brexit Party Wikipedia page and would like to respectfully disagree with you about the political positioning of the party. You said it was a "single-issue party (for the European Union elections), but I'd argue that the previous label (catch-all) is more true. It seems strange to look at a party that wishes to contest more than just one election as exclusively its positions on one election. It's fighting the Peterborough By-election in less than a month; it definitely has more than one policy, if only shown by the positions of their candidate there. I mean, a lot of parties are "one issue parties for the EU elections." That's what the EU elections are about! One issue: European integration. The Lib Dems and Change UK are one-issue second referendum parties for the sake of the EU elections, UKIP is a one-issue party for the sake of the elections; why do these groups get full positions, yet the Brexit party doesn't? If nothing else, then they definitely have policy in their similarity with UKIP, which Farage said the party was emulating. It just feels strange, similar to calling a party one-issue because of their position on Brexit during the referendum was argued for at the expense of their other policies. It just seems obvious: of course, the party is single-issue for the sake of a one-issue election, but it isn't one-issue generally. There are a good deal of Brexit Party members of the Welsh Assembly who have a whip that makes them vote similarly on more than just Brexit. Surely that is good enough evidence that they aren't merely a one-issue party.

Please discuss this on the Brexit Party talk page. I agree the labelling is not perfect, but the European election is tomorrow so we can review after that. I'd prefer to leave it blank for now until the party has explicitly set out its wider positions, but people kept wanting to add various labels, so I added the current description as I thought is was the most clear to the reader, and it is used widely in the press (which big tent generally isn't). Thanks edit

Thanks for helping out with all the golf. We haven't had a lot of dedicated golf editors over the years. Also I can think of only one other regular golf editor from the UK. ... On an unrelated topic, I can't help but wonder how much viewership our NHL and NBA gets there on TV. Our NHL Stanley Cup Finals will have game 3 tonight, and the NBA Finals will have game 2 tomorrow night. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 16:32, 1 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hey Johnsmith2116, yeah no problem. I'm pretty new to wikipedia editing, and was off work for a bit but am back now so don't have the same amount of time. NHL and NBA don't get much viewership as they are on in the middle of the morning on pay tv channels...and they are sports which generally aren't followed. NBA is on Sky Sports, which is the main sports channel over here, but NHL is on Premier Sports which is very niche. BARB show the top 10 programs by viewership on each channel each week https://www.barb.co.uk/viewing-data/four-screen-dashboard/. With things like golf though it is very difficult to know actual viewers, as golf is shown on Sky Sports Golf, but it is also sometimes also shown on their main channel (Sky Sports Main Event), so you have to add the two together (and golf rely makes the top 10 events on Sky Sports Main Event so isn't shown) Jopal22 (talk) 18:27, 1 June 2019 (UTC)Reply

Edit to Royal Portrush edit

You recently reverted an edit here with the comment "similar rv to Max's page". Can you please explain the edit? The fact that something is common on golf related articles does trump Wikipedia policy, and the policy is very clear on MOS:FLAG. Some other pages use it is not a reason to go against the main MOS policy. Please let me know why these pages should go against the agreed Wikipedia Manual of Style. Anyway there is nothing on the Golf wikiproject to say that flags should be used for golfers in any way. Thanks. Canterbury Tail talk 19:24, 19 July 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi Canterbury Tail. Thanks for your involvement in the golf pages, I see you left the same comment on both my and Tewapack's page. Firstly on flags being relevant, I would argue that this falls into the "In lists or tables, flag icons may be relevant when such representation of different subjects is pertinent to the purpose of the list or table itself" part of MOS:FLAGS. Sporting nationality and flags are widely used and discussed in golf, and are seen as very relevant....a case in point is the spotlight on Irish players in the current Open based in Ireland. For the issue of flags being used without country name, this is a consistent issue on all sporting pages, and in my opinion the MOS needs updating to be less ambiguous and contradictory in different places. As I said this comes up repeatedly e.g. Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Football/Archive 124#Flags - again, and I think it is important to avoid edit wars. I would suggest raising this on the main MOS talk page, a page with a high level of user input e.g. WP:FOOTBALL, or a page which has featured article status such as Premier League. As although I understand the WP:OTHER, people would expect an FA to be a good reference point where MOS is ambiguous. Jopal22 (talk) 20:03, 19 July 2019 (UTC).Reply

DS alerts custom message edit

Hello, the DS Alert is an FYI template that does not imply any wrong doing, only that you've edited in a contentious area where there are some special rules as explained in the links in the template itself. For more info, click and read those links. The rules require issueing the template with changes and I know they look scary or upsetting or in some other way not rosy sunrises. So before I posted them on your page I posted them on my own. And for that matter, I have posted them on many other editors pages who dabble in climate or the school strike movement. So we're all on teh same page! All that said, please beware of characterizing problems you think you see in our articles so you don't sound like you are WP:Casting aspersions. Thanks. Triggernometry (podcast) moved to draftspace edit

An article you recently created, Triggernometry (podcast), does not have enough sources and citations as written to remain published. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article meets Wikipedia's general notability guideline and thus is ready for mainspace, please follow the prompts on the Articles for Creation template atop the page. ... discospinster talk 18:41, 30 August 2019 (UTC)Reply

Golf Tour Wins edit

Hi Jopal,

This is Oogglywoogly. I tried to create the Official Tour Wins - Tour era wiki but obviously there was a lot of resistance to that. I was thinking about creating another list that included the combined victories for golfers between the PGA Tour (since 1969) and European Tour. Do you think there is any chance that will work?

Oogglywoogly (talk) 21:59, 11 September 2019 (UTC)OogglywooglyReply

Hi Oogglywoogly. I really don't think there is any chance that would be successful and would be seen as WP:OR. Anything you need to "create" rather than populate similar to lists already created elsewhere will get push back. Is there any source you have that lists "PGA Tour wins since 1969"?
Jopal22 (talk) 18:21, 12 September 2019 (UTC)Reply

No there is no list like that out there, unfortunately. Thank you for your response.

Oogglywoogly (talk) 22:12, 12 September 2019 (UTC)OogglywooglyReply

Hi Jopal,

It's Oogglywoogly again. I was looking to create an "Highest OWGR" in the "Personal Information" box at the beginning of the page for pro golfers. They have this for tennis players. Do you think there will be resistance?

Oogglywoogly (talk) 02:17, 17 September 2019 (UTC)OogglywooglyReply

Hi Oogglywoogly. Yes I think having highest ranking and current ranking in the infobox of eahc player would be good. The current ranking would take a lot of updating though, unless you follow the method used by national football teams e.g. England national football team. If you could set that up (i.e. automatic updating), that would be brilliant. Also you should be clear about what to do about players who started their career before the OWGR were introduced. I suggest putting together a plan addressing the above and raising it on the WP:GOLF talk page.

Your draft article, Draft:2020 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play edit

Hello, Jopal22. It has been over six months since you last edited the Articles for Creation submission or Draft page you started, "2020 WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play".

In accordance with our policy that Wikipedia is not for the indefinite hosting of material deemed unsuitable for the encyclopedia mainspace, the draft has been nominated for deletion. If you plan on working on it further, or editing it to address the issues raised if it was declined, simply edit the submission and remove the {{db-afc}}, {{db-draft}}, or {{db-g13}} code.

If your submission has already been deleted by the time you get there, and you wish to retrieve it, you can request its undeletion by following the instructions at this link. An administrator will, in most cases, restore the submission so you can continue to work on it.

Thank you for your submission to Wikipedia! CASSIOPEIA(talk) 08:56, 21 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

The Match Tiger v Phil edit

Was not a PGA TOUR sanctioned event it was an unofficial event for a start and it does not count as a career victory for Mickelson so why is it included here ? 92.251.147.172 (talk) 13:31, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

It was a PGA sanctioned unofficial event. It is shown in the unofficial events section. None of the unofficial events count as a career victory Jopal22 (talk) 14:35, 22 October 2019 (UTC)Reply

Turkish Airlines Open edit

Hi there, the link needs updated to 2019 for the T.A.O.. Can you do it? I would do it myself, but I am not able to get the European Tour website to load on my computer anymore. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:41, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Johnsmith2116, updated, but it seems you have to link the specific year now. I assume I updated what you were meaning? Yeah, ET has been a bit premature in changing but you need Microsoft Edge explorer now. Jopal22 (talk) 18:58, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. And yes, I have an older version. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:02, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
And by the way, unless I am mistaken, I think the PGA Tour has this week off. This is strange. They don't usually take the week off at this time of year, until it is time for their month long break until the new year. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:04, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Johnsmith2116. Yeah, they've done that on purpose because of the big money events in Asia. Any tournament held this week would have a very poor field as players would looks to rest and re-adjust to the time difference. Just look at the terrible field for the Houston Open this year. Having 3 big money Asian events in a row kills the field of any tournament in the US the week before/after. Jopal22 (talk) 19:10, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Good point. And I did noticed the field at the Houston Open, it had a 24 ranking, which is like an alternate event. They might end up wishing they kept the Houston Open in the spring. And speaking of those Japanese events, it's a shame that we don't get the Japan Open and the Dunlop Phoenix on TV here in the States. Those are tournaments with great fields that I believe we should be able to see. If Golf Channel wanted to show us those events, I'm sure they could. They always used to show us the year end Thailand Golf Championship event on the Asian tour, even though they didn't need to. I can't help but wonder if maybe no one outside of Japan has those events on their TV. I'd be interested to know if anyone in Europe has those events on their TV. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 19:18, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Nope, not shown in the UK, maybe GolfTV will add it to their portfolio Jopal22 (talk) 19:45, 4 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hi, thanks for doing the new bracket for the Nedbank, but please do the update for the link to it as well (unless someone beats you to it). Thanks. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 07:37, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

MLS Cup edit

Will MLS Cup 2019 be on TV in the UK? It will be at 8:00 PM tonight in the UK. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:08, 10 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Yep, Johnsmith2116. Although the Liverpool v Manchester City Premier League game today is the big one! Jopal22 (talk) 13:45, 10 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Good. That Liverpool vs Manchester City game is on here too, on NBCSN. What network is that game on there, and what network is the MLS game on there? ... Also, I'm watching the six man playoff of the Turkish Airlines Open. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 13:49, 10 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
All on Sky Sports. Just got back home in time for the six man playoff Jopal22 (talk) 13:58, 10 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Thanks. And good, you are able to see this playoff. I've never seen a two wave playoff, this is nice to see. Although, they may not get finished in the daylight, maybe under the flood lights, or maybe even hold it over until tomorrow. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 14:03, 10 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Liverpool is leading 3 to 0 at the moment, with 20 minutes remaining. ... Also, the 2019 ATP Finals are underway in London. Is that too on Sky Sports? Here, it is on Tennis Channel. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:59, 10 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
ATP events are no longer shown on TV here anymore. Amazon bought all the rights, so it is shown via Amazon Prime Jopal22 (talk) 23:54, 10 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
Sorry to hear that. Hopefully they at least show the four major tennis tournaments on TV, if not the other ATP events. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:53, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
The numbers are in for the MLS Cup. Here in the States, the championship match between Toronto and Seattle only got 823,000 viewers. That is down 40 percent from last year. Yikes! Johnsmith2116 (talk) 17:39, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
By comparison, the Manchester City/Liverpool match did nearly the same here in the States as the MLS Championship game, getting 733,000 viewers, and that was much earlier in the day here than the MLS championship game! We have a problem with Americans watching their own league. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:06, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply
To give one more comparison, a few weeks ago, on a Sunday night, the Zozo Championship final round got 789,000 viewers on Golf Channel in the USA, which is only 34,000 viewers less than that MLS championship game got a couple days ago. Johnsmith2116 (talk) 18:27, 12 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Question edit

Would you have any interest in doing a "nationalities in the field" chart? I am not able to load the European Tour website anymore, so, I can't do the chart for the Euro Tour anymore. I always did them every week. Phinumu had been helping me with them lately, but he apparently hasn't edited anything in several days and I am going to be backed up soon, with a new tournament starting in a few days (in South Africa). Would you like to do the one for the Turkish Airlines Open? Johnsmith2116 (talk) 11:48, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

It's probably not something I would be keen to do, but happy to copy and paste any information you might want from the ET website. Note though there are other websites that could give you what you need quite easily. For instance the OWGR website. If you copy the data into excel choosing "match destination formatting" it will look like the below (the example is the Nedbank Golf Challenge) Jopal22 (talk) 11:57, 11 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

Hello! Voting in the 2019 Arbitration Committee elections is now open until 23:59 on Monday, 2 December 2019. All eligible users are allowed to vote. Users with alternate accounts may only vote once.

The Arbitration Committee is the panel of editors responsible for conducting the Wikipedia arbitration process. It has the authority to impose binding solutions to disputes between editors, primarily for serious conduct disputes the community has been unable to resolve. This includes the authority to impose site bans, topic bans, editing restrictions, and other measures needed to maintain our editing environment. The arbitration policy describes the Committee's roles and responsibilities in greater detail.

If you wish to participate in the 2019 election, please review the candidates and submit your choices on the voting page. If you no longer wish to receive these messages, you may add {{NoACEMM}} to your user talk page. MediaWiki message delivery (talk) 00:24, 19 November 2019 (UTC)Reply

November 2019 edit

Your recent editing history at Brexit Party shows that you are currently engaged in an edit war; that means that you are repeatedly changing content back to how you think it should be, when you have seen that other editors disagree. To resolve the content dispute, please do not revert or change the edits of others when you are reverted. Instead of reverting, please use the talk page to work toward making a version that represents consensus among editors. The best practice at this stage is to discuss, not edit-war. See the bold, revert, discuss cycle for how this is done. If discussions reach an impasse, you can then post a request for help at a relevant noticeboard or seek dispute resolution. In some cases, you may wish to request temporary page protection.

Being involved in an edit war can result in you being blocked from editing—especially if you violate the three-revert rule, which states that an editor must not perform more than three reverts on a single page within a 24-hour period. Undoing another editor's work—whether in whole or in part, whether involving the same or different material each time—counts as a revert. Also keep in mind that while violating the three-revert rule often leads to a block, you can still be blocked for edit warring—even if you don't violate the three-revert rule—should your behavior indicate that you intend to continue reverting repeatedly. Deletion of Scotland from Corona UK page edit

Why delete valuable information, and not provide a link to the 'separate page'?

Many people were using the two as comparators, and it was fine as it was. I note there's a link to London Corona in the main page, but one has to scroll all the way to the bottom added links to find Scotland.

And you live in London. Surprise, surprise!

More information (assuming it's accurate) is never a bad thing. Hiding it away just makes it harder for people to find it. Please don't do that.

Let's have more links to more places, and why not have the four nations' regional statistics within the UK page? They make up the UK, after all !!

I notice England's regions are included in the UK stats chart, but Scotland's are not supposed to count in the UK in the same vein? Please. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.92.120.162 (talk) 02:52, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Again, I can't stress this enough, more information during this thing is a good thing. It can always be split up at a later, less important date.

Didn't know how else to communicate this on wiki. It's not intuitive to those that don't tend to talk in wiki. Hoping you take on the positive message. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.92.120.162 (talk) 02:50, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply

Hi, don't know if you will read this, but sorry you are disappointed at the removal of the Scotland stats breakdown from the main UK page. In response to your points:
  • I cannot see where there is a link to the London main page near the table, happy to add a similar link to Scotland if you can point out where it is?
  • Scotland, Wales, and N.Ireland and England regions are NUTS statistical regions of the United Kingdom. It seems to make sense to display statistics consistently with statistical regions. The regional breakdown of Scotland was equivalent to breaking down England to counties.
  • I am not deleting information, it still exists in a separate and explicit Scotland page.
  • This has nothing to do with me living in London (try to avoid personal attacks on wiki).
  • All the best in these tough times, and stay strong. If you want to become more involved in editing wikipedia I encourage it, but I found when I did join there is quite a lots of rules and guidance to understand. I would suggest concerns like the ones raised above would be best raised on the talk page of the article, as then others will also offer an opinion Jopal22 (talk) 09:54, 27 March 2020 (UTC)Reply
