Summary of my "Keep" position on the nomination to delete this article edit
This is a summary of my Keep position on the articles for deletion (AfD) nomination for this article, since I've written a lot about this topic over the past few days on many talk pages. Please use the official AfD page for this article as the main discussion forum, since this Talk page may get deleted with the article. But don't be bashful about summarizing or clarifying your "merge" or "delete" positions here, especially if you believe my summary here isn't a fair characterization of the conversation so far.
As of this writing, most of the !votes propose either "Delete" or "Merge", with all of those !votes suggesting that United States House of Representatives elections in California, 2018#District 10 would be the most logical place to put whatever content is wp:notable enough for Wikipedia. I make the case that the United States House of Representatives elections in California, 2018 article is due for a WP:SPLIT; which is why I created this article. I believe the topic of this article is at least as notable as these other single-district articles: United States House of Representatives election in Alaska, 2018, ...in Delaware, 2018, ...in Montana, 2018, ...in North Dakota, 2018, ...in South Dakota, 2018, ...in Vermont, 2018, and ...in Wyoming, 2018. Moreover, I believe the article quality, citations, and prose of this CA-10 article are at least as good as most of those articles single-district state articles.
This article was proposed for deletion shortly after I linked to it from the AfD for the "Audrey Denney" article. In that AfD, I made the case that candidates like Denney who are notable mainly through their association with the election could be written about in the election article. If they win, they're obviously notable. If they don't win (but they are a notable part of the race), they can receive an appropriate level of coverage in the election article.
My motivation was less about Audrey Denney in particular, but rather about ensuring that we have reasonably neutral places to collaborate on prose associated with recent California elections for the U.S. House of Representatives, future California elections for the U.S. House, and the notable candidates associated with them (like Harley Rouda, Josh Harder, Katie Hill (politician) and Katie Porter, who all now have articles). What I witnessed prior to the election was that many of the serious candidates who had already received substantial coverage from notable news outlets, but instead of an article, they only had redirects to the middle of a complicated, table-ridden article. So in early October, I pointed that out over on Talk:United States House of Representatives elections in California, 2018, but my comments didn't receive any obvious attention. What I found out in the past few days is that I should have been making my case over on Wikipedia talk:Notability (people)#Centralized discussion on the notability of political candidates. I may still do that, because there doesn't yet seem to be consensus over there, and I should make these points over there.
I discussed some of this over on Talk:Josh Harder article. The Josh Harder article was relegated to Draft space all the way until November 11, when it appeared likely he was going to win the election. Since Harder's main source of notability today is because of his election win, I copied a lot of the prose of this article over to his article. But Muboshgu trimmed my prose back to a wp:summary style paragraph and wp:hatnote, which I agree is was probably the correct outcome. And now I'm waiting to learn the fate of this article to figure out next steps. -- RobLa (talk) 23:11, 15 November 2018 (UTC)
