Traded picks? edit

I see them in other draft arcticles, but they're noticably absent in this one. Help? 24.87.56.142 (talk) 23:35, 19 March 2009 (UTC)Reply

Jets/Coyotes edit

Besides the fact all references list the Coyotes draft picks as being drafted under the Coyotes name, the YouTube video titled "Chris Phillips Drafted by the Ottawa Senators June 22, 1996" clearly shows Phoenix 11th on the draft board approximately 2:40 into the video. --Parkfly3 (talk) 06:01, 25 February 2014 (UTC)Reply

The following sentence - "selections of the future Phoenix Coyotes team were made under the Jets' name" - and the listing of Coyotes draft picks under the Jets name is verifiably false. --98.21.60.101 (talk) 04:09, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Reply

Actually it is not at all false. Using a direct quote from the Arizona Coyotes article which states "The Jets moved to Phoenix on July 1, 1996, and were renamed as the Phoenix Coyotes." This event took place nine days before the franchise officially moved. For events of this nature it is common practice to use the franchise location on the actual date of the event, a similar situation occurs with the 1976 draft as two teams relocated after the draft and the players drafted by the teams are listed as picks of the previous franchise.
1976 is not comparable since the future of both teams was up in the air and they had not received league approval to move by the time of the draft (page 228 of the NHL Guide reflects this by showing California and Kansas City as the selecting teams), whereas the Winnipeg-to-Phoenix move was approved by the league in January 1996 and it was known by the 1996 draft they would be called the Phoenix Coyotes. --Parkfly20 (talk) 12:25, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
It should also be noted that in all other instances of NHL teams relocating (since the draft was created in 1963) officially occurred before the date of the draft in those affected years (ex. Calgary in 1980, Carolina in 1997 and Winnipeg in 2011). Deadman137 (talk) 19:15, 6 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Correction: Calgary and Carolina's official transfer dates occurred after their respective first drafts took place. Calgary: June 11 (draft), June 24 (td). Carolina: June 21 (draft), June 25 (td). Since that is the actual precedent (the name the team drafts under is most relevant and not the official transfer date that matters) and also conforms to official references I've changed this article back to Phoenix. --Parkfly20 (talk) 12:25, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
I should also add that on page 21 of the 2015 NHL Guide and Record book it clearly states that the franchise transfer date from Winnipeg to Phoenix is July 1, 1996. Deadman137 (talk) 20:18, 9 February 2015 (UTC)Reply
Page 224 of the 2015 NHL Guide and Record book clearly states Focht and Briere were selected by Phoenix, not Winnipeg. Page 368 clearly states Briere was selected by Phoenix, not Winnipeg. In other words, though the franchise officially transferred on July 1, 1996, selections at the draft were made under the Coyotes name according to every reference that actually pertains to the draft and particularly the YouTube video which clearly shows Phoenix on the draft board. --Parkfly20 (talk) 12:25, 9 March 2015 (UTC)Reply
There is finally a published report that confirms an earlier transfer date of the Coyotes franchise and it is found in an Associated Press report on page 9 of this link which is dated December 13, 1995.[1] We now have enough evidence to support Phoenix making the picks at this event and this link will likely get added to the Arizona Coyotes article as well.
It should also be noted that in the cases of Calgary and Carolina similar published information to this can already be found in those articles, which allowed for editors to decide to ignore the NHL's own records. The link above provides enough contradictory evidence to make this change for the Coyotes franchise at this time. Deadman137 (talk) 17:55, 10 March 2015 (UTC)Reply

These redlinked draft picks meet WP:NHOCKEY edit

Note: Articles must also meet WP:GNG. --75.88.89.194 (talk) 10:50, 4 December 2021 (UTC)Reply
