Re: England v Ireland game. To suggest that the England Crowd started singing Swing Low as the result of a black player scoring is frankly disgusting. Swing Low was sung in rugby clubs complete with actions through the 1970s and 80s and featured at the Middlesex 7s throughout that time at Twickenham. It had been adopted by the Twickenham Crowd throughout the 80s and was sung regularly by large pockets throughout the stadium. These were dire times for England who were poor for the majority of the decade. The 1988 game v Ireland was the turning point - 3 nil down at half time with Melville departed with a broken leg, England suddenly came alive and destroyed Ireland. This England team went on to secure Grand Slams and also a RWC final spot.
