Talk:1981 NCAA Division I basketball tournament

Reagan "quote" edit

The Reagan quote inserted at the end was misquoted (though an earlier version seems to have been correct) and was not said to anyone involved in the tournament. Reagan (mis-)quoted Fields to a nurse and was joking about the fact that he was scheduled to visit Philadelphia the following day. It was an amusing joke, but the Philadelphia "connection" with the tournament was coincidental, and the quote does not fit in an article about the 1981 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. 143.239.96.226 (talk) 16:17, 19 March 2010 (UTC)Reply

– For all NCAA Basketball Tournament articles for 1981 and earlier, "Men's" should be dropped from the title, because the NCAA only began its Women's Basketball Tournament in 1982. Thus, "Men's" is an unnecessary qualifier for 1981 and earlier.

Also, before the 1973/74 school year, NCAA Division I was then called the "University Division", and "College Division" spanned what are now Division II and III. Source: NCAA Division II 2013 Yearbook, pp. 7-9. Thus, titling articles about pre-1973 tournaments "Division I" and "Division II" are anachronisms. • Whichever way the renaming goes, similar work will need to be done on the Infobox label template so that the links work again. Right now, they are broken because the infobox is looking for Division I Men's tournament pages and the pages are currently titled Men's Division I. (I didn't want to make changes now given that the tournament pages themselves are under consideration for renaming.) Zlionsfan (talk) 20:23, 2 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
    • Making a change to the proposal like this midstream makes it very difficult to assess consensus. That said, both the original proposal and this update make sense to me; I support both. --В²C 17:39, 15 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
      • Yeah, I realized upon further research that "University Division" only came into existence in the '50s, thus making "1939 NCAA University Division" an anachronism. Arbor to SJ (talk) 18:16, 16 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
        • Why can't we just create redirects, I'm realizing this infobox problem too. Also I'm moving towards support for these page moves. Zacchaeus (talk) 14:04, 19 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
          • The infobox can be customized depending on year so that for instance 1982 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament does not have a preceding "1981" (because there was no such tournament that year). However I'm not sure how to do that; I'm sure there are editors more savvy with customizing infoboxes. Arbor to SJ (talk) 18:22, 21 March 2017 (UTC)Reply
