Reagan "quote"
editThe Reagan quote inserted at the end was misquoted (though an earlier version seems to have been correct) and was not said to anyone involved in the tournament. Reagan (mis-)quoted Fields to a nurse and was joking about the fact that he was scheduled to visit Philadelphia the following day. It was an amusing joke, but the Philadelphia "connection" with the tournament was coincidental, and the quote does not fit in an article about the 1981 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. 143.239.96.226 (talk) 16:17, 19 March 2010 (UTC)

- 1981 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1981 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament
- 1980 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1980 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament
- 1979 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1979 NCAA Division I Basketball Tournament
- 1973 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1973 NCAA University Division Basketball Tournament
- 1972 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1972 NCAA University Division Basketball Tournament
- 1971 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1971 NCAA University Division Basketball Tournament
1939 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1939 NCAA University Division Basketball Tournament(see "new proposal" comment below)
– For all NCAA Basketball Tournament articles for 1981 and earlier, "Men's" should be dropped from the title, because the NCAA only began its Women's Basketball Tournament in 1982. Thus, "Men's" is an unnecessary qualifier for 1981 and earlier.
Also, before the 1973/74 school year, NCAA Division I was then called the "University Division", and "College Division" spanned what are now Division II and III. Source: NCAA Division II 2013 Yearbook, pp. 7-9. Thus, titling articles about pre-1973 tournaments "Division I" and "Division II" are anachronisms. - Support nomination makes good sense. Lepricavark (talk) 20:23, 16 February 2017 (UTC)
- I originally closed this as moved, but have reverted myself. I didn't read the nomination properly and realise that this would apply to every article from 1939 to 1981, not just the ones listed. Before moving 40-odd articles, I would prefer to have as crystal clear a consensus as we can get. So I'll relist this for another week and drop a note about the discussion at WT:CBB. - Haha, I was about to go to the CBB WikiProject but saw your comment. Thanks! Arbor to SJ (talk) 07:41, 28 February 2017 (UTC)
- Support moves. I see no reason to keep the anachronistic names that the current titles contain. ONR (talk) 17:54, 27 February 2017 (UTC)
- New proposal: All NCAA Tournament articles from 1956 and earlier should only be "[Year] NCAA Basketball Tournament", because the College Division Championship was only established in 1957 following the University Division/College Division split that began in 1956, per the yearbook originally cited. Specifically:
- 1956 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1956 NCAA Basketball Tournament
- 1955 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1955 NCAA Basketball Tournament
- 1939 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament → 1939 NCAA Basketball Tournament

- Whichever way the renaming goes, similar work will need to be done on the Infobox label template so that the links work again. Right now, they are broken because the infobox is looking for Division I Men's tournament pages and the pages are currently titled Men's Division I. (I didn't want to make changes now given that the tournament pages themselves are under consideration for renaming.) Zlionsfan (talk) 20:23, 2 March 2017 (UTC)
- Making a change to the proposal like this midstream makes it very difficult to assess consensus. That said, both the original proposal and this update make sense to me; I support both. --В²C ☎ 17:39, 15 March 2017 (UTC)
- Yeah, I realized upon further research that "University Division" only came into existence in the '50s, thus making "1939 NCAA University Division" an anachronism. Arbor to SJ (talk) 18:16, 16 March 2017 (UTC)
- Why can't we just create redirects, I'm realizing this infobox problem too. Also I'm moving towards support for these page moves. Zacchaeus (talk) 14:04, 19 March 2017 (UTC)
- The infobox can be customized depending on year so that for instance 1982 NCAA Division I Women's Basketball Tournament does not have a preceding "1981" (because there was no such tournament that year). However I'm not sure how to do that; I'm sure there are editors more savvy with customizing infoboxes. Arbor to SJ (talk) 18:22, 21 March 2017 (UTC)
