There are an old history about the hiding of this church. When Vang stave church was sold to the King of Prussia, Fredrik Wilhelm IV, the local residents was very upset and afraid the same thing was going to happen with Øye stave church too. So one night they get together and thore down the church and hide it. The next morning the church was gone without anyone ever knowing what had happend. Then in 1935 the remains of the church was rediscovered.
The story about how the church was hidden away should be checked. I only got it from memory..
