{{Sound of the day}} (or week or whatever) box edit

A possible template for a sound of the x box:

Sound of the day

Toque de Angola (ogg, 17 seconds, 174KB)
An unaccompanied berimbau playing a Capoeira Angola rhythm.

Sound credit: Aarchiba
Archive - Nominate new sound

Feel free to edit the version above to discuss — it makes it easier than having eight different possibilities in the same section. One thing that would be very good is if the image could be clickable to hear the sound, but I don't know if there any way to do that with the current code. Also, it would be nice to have a dedicated image, instead of the generic speaker icon; I'd be happy to make one if anyone has any ideas on what would be nice. — Asbestos | Talk (RFC) 14:55, 11 August 2005 (UTC)Reply

I've linked the image (to the en.wikipedia page). Dendodge|TalkContribs 17:01, 1 September 2008 (UTC)Reply

Source for sound candidates edit

The commons:Commons:Media_of_the_day page might be a good list to go through for possible 'featurable' sounds. All are available under a public license and have already undergone some vetting in regards to quality. --CBD 22:06, 7 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Featured content page edit

Featured sounds have been added to the WP:FC page - which is linked from the Main page and the navigation bar which is always displayed. Discussion of where/how to display them, standard colors for the project, and other issues can be found here. --CBD 19:37, 18 February 2007 (UTC)Reply

Basically images? edit

Sound files on Wiki are simply loaded as Image:XYZ.ogg. Seeing that there are so few sounds to be featured, I believe that this should be made a subsection of featured images. Only a suggestion. Reywas92TalkReview me 20:14, 17 June 2007 (UTC)Reply

Everything has to start somewhere. And WP:FPC is backlogged as is. 72.8.104.11 06:47, 26 June 2007 (UTC)Reply
I tried to convince the peoples over there that featured images should be changed to featured media, and include recordings and videos, especially since both can now be played in-browser, but there was a lot of resistance to that. Featured Sound WikiProject Proposal edit

I have proposed the creation of a new WikiProject dedicated to collecting, and critqueing sounds for Featured Status. Sounds is the smallest group of Featured Content on Wikipedia, and we need to help fix that. So if you like, please click on the following link, and second my proposal, so it can be created. Thanks. New Featured content IRC channel edit

Following on from the creation of #wikipedia-en-FL connect for discussing the WP:Featured list process, a new IRC channel for discussing all Featured content has been created. #wikipedia-en-FC connect. Portal? edit

Why is Featured sounds in portal namespace whereas everything else is in Wikipedia space? I have no preference which is where - I just find it odd to not have all of the featured content pages in the same space. --B (talk) 00:59, 22 January 2009 (UTC)Reply

Hi, B. It looks like it was discussed here, and then there was a discussion about moving all featured content pages to the Portal namespace at VPP here. – wodup – 10:16, 7 February 2009 (UTC)Reply

Poll: autoformatting and date linking edit

This is to let people know that there is only a day or so left on a poll. The poll is an attempt to end years of argument about autoformatting which has also led to a dispute about date linking. Your votes are welcome at: Wikipedia:Date formatting and linking poll. Regards Lightmouse (talk) 09:08, 11 April 2009 (UTC)Reply

Seems like a ghost town here. I won't check it out each week for the "Features and admins" page until we know there's activity. Tony (talk) 09:19, 12 July 2010 (UTC)Reply

Page reorganization edit

This page is inefficiently organized. Can't it be formed of 2 or 3 columns so the list looks easier to browse through? I.e. {{Featured topic box}} consists of three columns so the box itself looks pretty, not bloated. 18.111.55.86 (talk) 02:12, 14 August 2010 (UTC)Reply

Yes, I agree. I've been thinking of how to do this. The problem is that we have a very small group of active members at FS and I don't think any of their expertise lies in this sort of thing. I'm going to ask around and such. Part of the issue lies in that the sound file boxes are large. Maybe two columns and a cleaner, crisper, background would help. Also, I think that making it searchable would be great, and splitting down some of the categories would also be a good idea. Sven Manguard Wha? 04:39, 5 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Carlos Gardel - Por Una Cabeza edit

File:Carlos Gardel - Por Una Cabeza.ogg
Previous version - will not play?
File:Por una cabeza carlos gardel.ogg
Replacement version which I've just created

The featured sound File:Carlos Gardel - Por Una Cabeza.ogg does not appear to work - ie it does not play, at least for several people who checked, including myself under FireFox. If downloaded, it seems to work.

This was reported by a user, and I suspected some technical problem - I have to assume that it did work, as it is a featured sound.

I uploaded a copy of the exact same file, to test, and that had the same problems.

The original source given did not work.

Therefore, I searched and found another MP3 version, from the original album, and converted it to an ogg file, and uploaded. It works. It is File:Por una cabeza carlos gardel.ogg.

Could someone please sort out the 'featured sound' status, etc. I will edit the articles on en that use the file.  Chzz  ►  23:59, 24 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Indeed, the file didn't work for me either. I transferred the featured template to the new file and replaced it on the portal page. Since the original is not working at all, I consider this non-controversial. Thank you for tracking down a good copy. Jujutacular talk 18:59, 25 September 2010 (UTC)Reply

Changes to the portal edit

This seems as good as any of a place to put this notice.

In two cases, the Spring Peepers and the Alligator field recordings, both an edited version and the origional version of the field recording were promoted, presumably by accident, as only the edited versions gained consensus and were slated for promotion. I "delisted" the two incorrect promotions, swapped out the portal sounds of the originals for those of the edits, and made sure all of the file pages themselves reflected the correct outcomes of the FSCs. Neither FSC were recent, and thus far I have not seen anything else like this.

I'll keep everyone posted. Sven Manguard Wha? 05:10, 7 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

P.S. I'm manually updating the count at the top soon. It's currently wrong. Without having performed an official count, my current estimate lies at 149 files in 232 parts. The logs from 2008 were heavily off. I will investigate in the near future.

Count Performed edit

I have performed a count and updated the numbers. There are 154 featured sounds in 229 parts. There are 230 parts on the portal, however I left out of the count one file, "Complete version: Theme and Variations I through VI" as it was redundant to the five part multi-part submission immediately proceeding it. There is, however an issue. If my count is correct, and there are 230 items on the portal, then there is a three item discrepancy between the portal and category:Featured sounds, which lists 233 items. I will investigate this further in the future. Please note that this was not a pleasant task, but I felt it had to be done because we had competing information between the portal, the category, and the FS logs. Therefore, please indulge the following rant: Closers: Please be careful to always update the count on the portal and the monthly logs. Thanks you. Featured list/topic/sound on the main page this week edit

As part of the celebration for our 10th anniversary, on Jan 15 I'm going to be putting a featured list, sound, and topic on the main page in place of the featured article for that day. See Talk:Main_Page#Featured_content_for_a_day Raul654 (talk) 22:38, 12 January 2011 (UTC)Reply

Why is recent music so under-represented? edit

Simple question and I'm not sure if I'm misunderstanding the use of the Featured Sounds page but, surely more samples of newer music should be presented here?

There's been such a drastic variety in music, inclusion of electronic instruments and spread of genres recently that I think more samples are needed to perfect the range of 'best sounds of Wikipedia'
