September 1

  • 1962 - Typhoon Wanda hit Hong Kong, killing 434 people there.
  • 1984 - Typhoon Ike made landfall in the southeastern Philippines with winds of 230 km/h (145 mph). Ike killed between 1,000 and 3,000 people in the Philippines and China.
  • 2019 - Hurricane Dorian (pictured) reached peak intensity as a Category 5 hurricane, with peak 1-minute sustained winds of 295 km/h (185 mph), while making landfall over the Bahamas. On September 2, Dorian stalled over Grand Bahama island at Category 5 intensity for a day, causing catastrophic destruction. Dorian was known for being the strongest hurricane to make landfall and impact the islands on record.

  • 1937 - A powerful typhoon struck Hong Kong, killing over 11,000 people in the British colony.
  • 1985 - Hurricane Elena (pictured) made landfall as a major hurricane over southern United States, killing 9 and causing $1.3 billion in damages.

  • 1964 - Typhoon Ruby struck Hong Kong with wind gusts of 268 km/h (166 mph), killing 734 people across southeastern China.
  • 2004 - Hurricane Frances made landfall in southern Florida just three weeks after Hurricane Charley had affected the state. Frances caused about $10 billion in damages.
  • 2017 - Hurricane Irma (pictured) reached peak intensity, with winds of 180 miles per hour (290 km/h), the highest-recorded winds in the open Atlantic, while making landfall in Barbuda. Overall, after impacting the Caribbean and Florida, Irma killed a total of 109 people, and caused a total of $64.76 billion (2018 USD) in damages, becoming the fifth-costliest hurricane on record.

  • 1991 - Hurricane Claudette reaches peak intensity as a Category 4 major hurricane with winds of 215 km/h (130 mph) and a minimum pressure of 944 hPa.
  • 2004 - Hurricane Ivan (pictured) passed just to the north of Grenada causing over $800 million of damage. Ivan caused a total of over $16 billion of damage, mostly in the United States.

September 8

  • 1900 - The 1900 Galveston hurricane (track pictured) struck Galveston, Texas, with winds in excess of 240 km/h (150 mph). The hurricane is the deadliest in the history of the United States and killed over 8,000 people.
  • 1987 - Typhoon Gerald reaches peak intensity with 10-minute winds of 150 km/h (90 mph) and a minimum pressure of 950 hPa before making landfall in Taiwan which killed 127 people in total.

  • 2003 - Typhoon Maemi (pictured) reached its peak intensity to the east of Taiwan. Maemi killed 115 people and caused over $4 billion in damage, mostly in South Korea.
  • 2008 - Typhoon Sinlaku reaches peak intensity as a Category 4 with 10-minute winds of 185 km/h (115 mph) while to the east of Taiwan. In total, Sinlaku caused about $1.1 billion in damages and killed 14 people, directly or indirectly.

September 11,

  • 1992 - Hurricane Iniki (pictured) made landfall on the Hawaiian island of Kauai with winds of 225 km/h (140 mph). Iniki became the strongest and costliest hurricane to strike the state, causing $1.8 billion of damage.
  • 2002 - Hurricane Gustav reaches its peak intensity as a Category 2 hurricane. Gustav was the first hurricane of that season, therefore becoming the one of the latest first hurricane to form. It was also the first storm to be named as a subtropical cyclone.

September 12,

  • 1961 - Typhoon Nancy (pictured) reached its peak intensity with winds of 345 km/h (215 mph), the highest maximum sustained winds of any tropical cyclone. Nancy also held its Category 5 intensity for the most number of days with 5½ days. Moreover it killed over 170 people in Japan and caused about $500 million in damages.
  • 1989 - Typhoon Sarah makes landfall over Taiwan as a devastating typhoon. Fatalities from Sarah were 71 and damages totaled up to 4.3 billion in New Taiwan Dollar. (US$175.3 million).

  • 1995 - Hurricane Ismael made landfall in the state of Sinaloa, Mexico as a minimal hurricane. Ismael killed 116 people and caused $26 million of damage.
  • 2006 - Typhoon Shanshan (pictured) reaches its peak intensity with 10-minute winds of 205 km/h (125 mph) and a minimum pressure of 919 hPa. Shanshan killed 11 people and caused $2.5 billion in South Korea and Japan.

  • 1945 - Typhoon Ida struck Japan, killing 2,473 people.
  • 1959 - Typhoon Sarah made landfall near Busan, South Korea, leaving over 700,000 people homeless in the country, and killing 2,000 people along the storm's path.
  • 1991 - Tropical Storm Ignacio affected Southwestern Mexico and killed 23 people.
  • 2004 - Hurricane Jeanne passed over Hispaniola, bringing heavy rain to the island. The rains caused severe flooding in Haiti, killing over 3,000 people.
  • 2010 - Hurricane Karl (pictured) reached Category 3 intensity where it made landfall over in Veracruz. Karl caused $3.9 billion in damages and killed 22.

September 18

  • 2013 - Hurricane Manuel (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a Category 1 with winds of 120 km/h (75 mph) with a minimum pressure of 983 hPa. Manuel made landfall near Culiacán with extreme impacts killing 123 people and damages of $4.2 billion. It became the costliest hurricane in the East Pacific.
  • 2020 - Subtropical Storm Alpha made landfall in mainland Portugal, the first to do so. The storm costed €20 million (US$24.2 million) in damages.

  • 1967 - Hurricane Beulah made landfall in Texas just north of the Rio Grande. Beulah caused severe flooding in the state with the resulting damage exceeding $1 billion.
  • 1999 - Hurricane Gert (pictured) passes the island of Bermuda as a weakening Category 3 major hurricane. In its lifetime, Gert killed only 2 people with minor damages.
  • 2017 - Hurricane Maria made landfall on the island of Puerto Rico as a high-end Category 4 major hurricane, devastating the island. The hurricane caused the deaths of 2,975 people total in Puerto Rico, from both direct and indirect causes, and also caused at least $90 billion dollars (2017 USD) in damage on the island territory. Maria more than 35 inches (90 cm) of rain in some areas on Puerto Rico.

  • 1958 - Typhoon Ida struck southeastern Honshu, killing 1,269 people.
  • 1959 - Typhoon Vera made landfall on the coast of Honshu, Japan with winds of 260 km/h (160 mph), killing over 5,000 people to become one of Japan's deadliest tropical cyclones on record. Vera left 1.5 million people homeless, with damage estimated at US$261 million.
  • 2009 - Tropical Storm Ketsana (pictured) devastated Luzon, Philippines with extreme flooding and killed more than 600 people and damages up to 11 billion (US$230 million). It was also recognized as the most devastating typhoon to strike Metro Manila since 1970.

September 27

  • 1991 - Typhoon Mireille (pictured) hits southwestern Japan with winds of 165 km/h (105 mph). Mireille caused over US$10 billion in damages, making it the second costliest typhoon on record. 64 people were also killed by the typhoon.
  • 2006 - Typhoon Xangsane devastates the Philippines after killing 197 people and $118 million damages in that country alone.

  • 1982 - Hurricane Paul made landfall in the Mexican state of Sinaloa with maximum sustained winds of 155 km/h (100 mph), killing over 1,000 people across Mexico and Central America.
  • 1992 - As the longest-living tropical cyclone in the East Pacific, Hurricane Tina (pictured) reaches peak intensity with winds of 240 km/h (150 mph) and a minimum pressure of 932 hPa.
