October 1

1976 - Hurricane Liza brushed the south of the Baja California peninsula in Mexico at its peak intensity, killing over 600 people in La Paz.
1986 - Hurricane Paine (pictured) reaches peak intensity just before making landfall in Sonora.
2004 - Cyclone Onil becomes the first tropical cyclone to be named by the IMD within the North Indian Ocean basin.

October 2

1858 - The 1858 San Diego hurricane passed just to the west of San Diego, California, bringing heavy rain and powerful winds to the city. It is the only tropical cyclone ever recorded to directly affect the state as a hurricane.
2014 - Typhoon Phanfone (pictured) peaked as a Category 4 super typhoon, with 1-minute sustained winds of 255 km/h (155 mph), a few days before re-curving to Japan, and caused a total of $100 million in damage and killed 11 people.

October 3

1963 - Hurricane Flora reached its peak as a Category 4 hurricane with 225 km/h (140 mph) winds in the Caribbean Sea. Flora killed over 7,000 people, mostly in Cuba and Haiti as a result of excessive rainfall.
2015 - Hurricane Joaquin (pictured) reaches peak intensity as a high-end Category 4 hurricane, after impacting the Bahamas.

October 4

1995 - Hurricane Opal made landfall on the Florida Panhandle with 185 km/h (115 mph) winds. Opal caused over $3 billion of damage in Florida alone.
2016 - Hurricane Matthew (pictured) affects the Caribbean as a Category 4 major hurricane, where more than 1,000 people were killed and damages recorded nearly about $15 billion.

October 5

1864 - The 1864 Calcutta cyclone hit India near Calcutta, devastating the city and killing about 60,000 people.
1999 - Typhoon Dan reaches its maximum intensity as a Category 3 typhoon with 10-minute sustained winds of 150 km/h (90 mph)
2003 - Tropical Storm Larry (pictured) makes landfall over in Paraíso, Tabasco. Damages from Larry were recorded at $53.6 million.

October 6

1973 - Typhoon Nora reached its peak intensity with 295 km/h (185 mph) winds in the Philippine Sea. Nora made landfall in northeast Luzon a few days later, causing $2 billion of damage.
1989 - Typhoon Angela makes landfall over in northern Luzon, Philippines and killing a total of 119.
2013 - Typhoon Fitow (pictured) makes landfall in Fujian, causing $10.4 billion in damages, making it the third costliest typhoon on record.

October 7

1737 - The 1737 Calcutta cyclone hit Calcutta, India killing at least 3,000 people. Until recently, it was thought that this natural disaster was an earthquake and not a tropical cyclone.
2008 - Tropical Storm Marco (pictured), recognized as the smallest tropical cyclone on record, makes landfall over in Veracruz, Mexico, where it also dissipated in the same day, only causing minimal damages.

October 8,

1976 - Hurricane Madeline made landfall on the Mexican coast at its peak intensity. Extensive evacuations kept casualties to a minimum with a total of only seven deaths.
2001 - Hurricane Iris (pictured), as Category 4 major hurricane with winds of 230 km/h (145 mph), makes landfall over in Belize, killing 36 people with damages totaled up to $258 million.

October 9,

1985 - Hurricane Waldo makes landfall over in Sonora, New Mexico as a Category 2 hurricane.
1992 - Hurricane Winifred reaches Category 3 major hurricane intensity shortly before making landfall over in Southwestern Mexico.
1997 - Hurricane Pauline (pictured) made landfall on the Mexican coastline near Puerto Escondido causing about $7.5 billion in damage and killing over 200 people.

October 10

1780 – The Great Hurricane of 1780 stalled near Barbados, killing over 4,000 people on the island. The storm killed about 22,000 in total throughout the Lesser Antilles, making it the deadliest Atlantic hurricane ever recorded.
1960 - A cyclone struck what is now Bangladesh, killing 6,000 people.
1997 – Cyclone Lusi became the first named storm of one of the most active South Pacific season, and is one of a few systems in record within the basin to develop in the month of October.
2018 – Hurricane Michael (pictured) made landfall on Mexico Beach, Florida as a Category 5 hurricane, becoming the most powerful hurricane to strike the Florida Panhandle on record.

October 11,

2005 - Hurricane Vince made landfall in the southern Iberian Peninsula as a tropical depression, becoming the first known tropical cyclone to ever make landfall on continental Europe however some sources suggest the stronger 1842 Spain hurricane did so first on October 29, 1842.
2014 - Cyclone Hudhud (pictured) reached peak intensity as a Category 4 tropical cyclone before making landfall over in Andhra Pradesh. Hudhud caused ₹21,908 (US$3.8 billion) in damages and killed 124 people in total.
2018 - Cyclone Titli struck Andhra Pradesh, causing 85 deaths.

October 12

1974 - Typhoon Bess downed a United States Air Force WC-130H Hercules reconnaissance aircraft (call sign Swan 38) in the South China Sea, with the presumed loss of the crew of six.
1979 - Typhoon Tip (pictured) reached global peak intensity with a central pressure of 870 hPa (mbar) becoming the most intense tropical cyclone ever recorded.
2013 - Cyclone Phailin struck southeastern India, spurring the country's largest evacuation in 23 years; there were 45 deaths related to the storm.

October 13

1970 - Typhoon Joan moved through the Philippines, killing 768 people less than a week before another typhoon – Kate – struck the country.
1992 - Typhoon Yvette (pictured) attained peak intensity with 1-minute sustained winds of 285 km/h (115 mph) and a minimum pressure of 915 hPa.
2018 - Hurricane Leslie transitioned into an extratropical cyclone just before striking Portugal; Leslie caused 17 fatalities and an estimated damage total of €424 million (US$500 million).

October 14,

1982 - Typhoon Nancy with 1-minute sustained winds of 215 km/h (130 mph) makes landfall over northern Luzon killing 128 people and damages of $58 million.
1998 - Typhoon Zeb (pictured) made landfall on northeastern Luzon in the Philippines having weakened from its peak intensity of 285 km/h (180 mph) winds. Zeb killed a total of 99 people and left about $800 million in damage.
2012 - Cyclone Anais reached peak intensity east of northern Madagascar, marking the earliest in a south-west Indian Ocean cyclone season for an intense tropical cyclone.

October 15,

1954 - Hurricane Hazel made landfall in North Carolina and rapidly moved north through the eastern United States and Canada. Hazel killed about 100 people in the United States and severe flooding killed a further 99 in Toronto.
1985 - Typhoon Cecil (track pictured) made landfall over in Vietnam as a Category 3 typhoon, where casualties had a total of 702 people.

October 16

1942 - A cyclone made landfall near Kolkata, killing 40,000 people.
1944 - The 1944 Cuba–Florida hurricane made landfall in western Cuba killing about 300 people.
1999 - Tropical Depression Rening which soon became Eve, affects most of Visayas, Philippines as a weak system.
2014 - Hurricane Gonzalo (pictured) reached its peak strength, with 1-minute sustained winds of 230 km/h (145 mph). Gonzalo caused damages of $400 million (2014 USD), mostly on the island of Bermuda.

October 17,

1947 - A US Air Force plane dropped nearly 82 kg of dry ice into the 1947 Cape Sable hurricane off the East Coast of the United States as part of Project Cirrus, the first attempt by man to control a tropical cyclone. The hurricane abruptly changed direction, making landfall near Savannah, Georgia and due to the public blaming the seeding for the change in direction the project was cancelled.
2015 - Typhoon Koppu (pictured) made landfall in northern Luzon of Philippines. As a very severe typhoon, Koppu brought flooding where it had killed a total of 58 people and damages up to $235 million.

October 18

1970 - Typhoon Kate struck Mindanao in the Philippines, killing 631 people.
1985 - Typhoon Dot made landfall on Luzon in the Philippines. Dot killed 90 people and caused more than $80 million in damage.
2010 - Typhoon Megi (pictured) struck Luzon in the Philippines at peak intensity, and it later affected Taiwan with heavy rainfall, causing 69 deaths.

October 19,

1994 - Typhoon Teresa reaches peak intensity only as a Category 1 typhoon. Teresa killed a total of 14 and caused damages of $67.4 million.
2005 - Hurricane Wilma (pictured) became the most intense Atlantic hurricane on record with a central pressure of 882 hPa (mbar) to the east of the Yucatán Peninsula. Damages from Wilma were recorded nearly at $30 billion.

October 20,

1983 - Hurricane Tico made landfall in Mexico near the city of Mazatlán. Tico killed at least nine people and was responsible for $66 million of damage.
1986 - Hurricane Roslyn weakens from a Category 4 hurricane as it re-curves towards Mexico.
2004 - Typhoon Tokage (pictured) makes landfall over in Japan just before it became extratropical which caused about $3 billion in damages.

October 21

1952 - Typhoon Trix moved through the Philippines and later struck Vietnam, killing 1,400 people along its path.
2009 - Hurricane Neki (pictured) in the Central Pacific reaches peak intensity as a Category 3 major hurricane while located several miles west of Hawaii.

October 22

1988 - Hurricane Joan struck southeastern Nicaragua as a Category 4 hurricane, killing 216 people and leaving more than US$2 billion in damage.
1998 - Typhoon Babs hit the Philippines eight days after Typhoon Zeb. Babs killed 221 people in the Philippines and caused over $6.5 billion of damage, which prompted a recession in the country.
2003 - Typhoon Ketsana (pictured), while east of the Philippines, reaches its peak strength as a Category 4 with 10-minute winds of 165 km/h (105 mph).
2010 - Cyclone Giri struck Myanmar while rapidly intensifying, killing 157 people.

October 23

1972 - Cyclone Bebe moved through Fiji after passing through what is now Tuvalu, killing 25 people.
2015 - Hurricane Patricia (pictured) became the most intense cyclone in the Western Hemisphere with a central pressure of 872 hPa (mbar) and winds of 345 km/h (215 mph) before making landfall on the western coast of Mexico.

October 24

1988 - Typhoon Ruby made landfall in the Philippines causing over $200 million in damage, and sinking a passenger ferry in the Visayan Sea which killed 387 of the people on board.
2006 - Cyclone Xavier became the strongest recorded South Pacific tropical cyclone in the month of October, attaining 10 minute winds of 175 km/h (110 mph).
2018 - Typhoon Yutu (pictured) becomes the strongest typhoon to impact the Mariana Islands with 1-minute sustained winds of 280 km/h (175 mph). Yutu later impacted the Philippines, and combined damages were toppled to US$854 million.

October 25

1961 - Tropical Storm Harriet struck Thailand, killing 935 people and becoming the nation's deadliest natural disaster on record.
2002 - Hurricane Kenna (pictured) made landfall on the Mexican coast near San Blas, Nayarit with winds of 225 km/h (140 mph). Kenna caused $5 million of damage.

October 26

1978 - Typhoon Rita (pictured) made landfall on Luzon in the Philippines causing significant damage.
1984 - Typhoon Vanessa reaches its peak intensity as an intense Category 5 with a minimum pressure of 880 mbar.
2012 - Cyclone Murjan dissipates over in Somalia after causing little to no damages.

October 27

1959 - The 1959 Mexico hurricane made landfall on the Pacific coast of Mexico as a Category 5 hurricane killing at least 1,000 people. It is also the strongest Pacific hurricane landfall on record.
2014 - Tropical Storm Hanna (pictured) makes landfall over in northeastern Nicaragua, causing little to no damages. No fatalities were reported from Hanna.

October 28

1999 - The 1999 Odisha cyclone (pictured) reached its peak intensity with a central pressure of 912 hPa (mbar), making it the most intense tropical cyclone on record in the North Indian Ocean. The storm made landfall in the Indian state of Odisha the next day killing about 10,000 people.

October 29

1998 - Hurricane Mitch (pictured) made landfall in Honduras with its excessive rains causing severe landslides and flooding throughout Central America. Mitch killed nearly 20,000 people and caused more than $5 billion of damage.
2007 - Tropical Storm Noel struck Haiti, killing 222 people along its path through the Greater Antilles.
2012 - Hurricane Sandy became an extratropical cyclone just before making landfall on New Jersey. Its large size and high storm surge caused US$75 billion in damage and 233 deaths across the Northeastern United States.

October 30

1971 - A cyclone moved ashore southeastern India, killing 10,000 people.
2005 - Hurricane Beta (pictured) made landfall over in Nicaragua which killed nine people in total with damages of $15.5 million.

October 31

1876 - A powerful cyclone struck what is now Bangladesh, killing 200,000 people from storm surge flooding and subsequent famine.
1960 - A cyclone hit what is now Bangladesh, killing 14,174 people.
2012 - Cyclone Nilam made landfall over in South India, killing 75 people in total.
2020 - Typhoon Goni (pictured) made landfall over Bicol Region, Philippines with 10-minute sustained winds of 220 km/h (140 mph). Goni caused about ₱20 billion (US$369 million) in damages.
