Career edit

Born in San Sebastián, Gipuzkoa, Basque Country, Guruzeta joined Athletic Bilbao's youth setup in 2014, from Antiguoko KE.[1][2] He made his debut as a senior with the farm team in the 2014–15 campaign, in Tercera División.

On 18 December 2015, profiting from the injury of Asier Villalibre, Guruzeta was promoted to the reserves in Segunda División.[3] He made his professional debut three days later, starting in a 1–1 home draw against CD Lugo.[4]

Guruzeta made his first-team – and La Liga – debut on 27 August 2018, replacing Markel Susaeta late into a 2–2 home draw against SD Huesca; he went on to appear in eight more league and Copa del Rey matches during the campaign, with one goal in a cup fixture away to Sevilla FC (Athletic won on the night but lost the tie on aggregate).[5] In April 2019, back playing for the B-team in the third tier, he suffered a serious injury, rupturing the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee.[6] He made a successful recovery but did not play again for the first team.

On 1 September 2020, Guruzeta terminated his contract with the Lions, and signed a three-year contract with second division newcomers CE Sabadell FC just hours later,[7] with Athletic retaining an option until 2022 to buy him back.[8] He scored his first professional goal on 22 November, netting his team's second in a 3–1 home success over UD Las Palmas. On 16 July 2021, after suffering relegation, Guruzeta signed for SD Amorebieta.[9]

On July 3, 2022, he returned to Athletic Club, signing a two-year contract.[10] On August 29, he scored a brace in the thrashing of Cádiz CF at the Nuevo Mirandilla (0-4).[11] On November 4, he scored his third goal of the season, at Montilivi against Girona (2-1),[12] which made him the player with the best goalscoring average in the top five leagues.[13] Four days later, in his first start, he scored a brace against Real Valladolid at San Mamés (3-0).[14] On March 17, 2023, he scored against Real Valladolid at the Estadio José Zorrilla (1-3).[15]

On August 19, 2023, he scored the second goal in the victory against Osasuna (0-2).[16] A week later he scored the comeback goal, at San Mamés, against Real Betis (4-2) on the stroke of half-time.[17] On September 16, he put the Rojiblancos ahead in the thrashing of Cádiz (3-0).[18] On October 6, he scored the first goal in the victory against UD Almería (3-0).[19] On November 10, he scored a brace in the victory against Celta Vigo (4-3).[20][21] On December 2, he opened the scoring in the thrashing of Rayo Vallecano (4-0).[22] On December 16, he scored in the victory against Atlético de Madrid (2-0).[23] On January 24, 2024, he scored after 36 seconds, at San Mamés, in the victory against FC Barcelona (4-2) in the Copa quarterfinals.[24][25] On February 2, he scored his tenth goal of the season in the thrashing of RCD Mallorca (4-0).[26] On February 20, he renewed his contract with the Bilbao club until 2028.[27][28] On February 29, he scored the third goal against Atlético de Madrid in the Copa semi-final second leg.[29] On March 10, he scored his eleventh league goal, at the Estadio de Gran Canaria, in the victory against UD Las Palmas (0-2).[30][31] A week later he scored a brace in the victory against Deportivo Alavés (2-0).[32][33] On April 6, he started in the Copa final against RCD Mallorca (1-1), in which they were champions in the penalty shootout.[34][35]

Personal life edit

Guruzeta's father, Xabier, was also a footballer; a central defender, he mainly represented Real Sociedad during his career.[36][37] His younger brother Jon, who plays as a right winger,[38] also began his career at Antiguoko before agreeing to join Athletic Bilbao's cantera in 2018.[39]
