Maybe you missed it but I already linked to a 2018 article from The Hollywood reporter that said they were joining the project and that they had wored on the 1997 film. Superhero film?

Why does the article call it a superhero film? Most of the sources and Todd McFarlane himself are outright saying that this is not a traditional comic book movie, but a full-on horror movie inspired by John Carpenter and The Grudge. Spawn won't even have the ability talk. There's a reason why the film went back into development after Joker was a success (and why Blumhouse was interested in the first place). Calling it a "superhero film" assumes that it's a straight adaptation of the comic, which it really isn't. DarkKnight2149 15:59, 8 May 2020 (UTC)

There are other sources in the article. Of course, if something changes or McFarlane is forced to make concessions to have the film produced, we can always re-add "superhero film". But for the last few years or so, McFarlane has been building it up as a $10-20 million horror film inspired by films like The Grudge, Ringu, and The Thing, with Spawn depicted as a "silent monster"-type character. I feel like superhero is a significant aspect of it that it needs to be noted. Unbreakable (2000) is very much unlike many superhero films but it's listed as a "superhero thriller". Also, Spawn himself is pretty much confirmed to be using his powers against evil, making him fit that superhero quota, despite it being executed in a horror-monster route. If you want, we can put a footnote on the genre explaining how its leans more horror, but I feel the "superhero" part should be in the open. IAmNMFlores (talk) 21:12, 27 September 2022 (UTC)
