The Syro-Malabar Catholic Major Archeparchy of Kodungallur is the major archeparchy and the see of the Major Archbishop of the Syro-Malabar Catholic Church based in the city of Kodungallur. It became the seat of the The Major Archbishop of Erankulam-Angamaly will become the Bishop of the Major Archeparchy becoming the "Major Archbishop of Kodungallur".

Reason for the Move edit

During the January 2023 Synod of Bishops, George Alencherry announced a proposal to the Synod to move the Church Headquarters from the Syro-Malabar Catholic Major Archeparchy of Ernakulam–Angamaly to Kodungallur due to it's historic significance in the Syro Malabar Church. This move also comes after pleas from the members of the Archeparchy of Ernakulam-Angamaly to be freed from the administrative control of the Major Archbishop and the Mount Saint Thomas Curia and to be given a Independent Archbishop, preferably one from their Eparchy.[1]. Cathedral edit

Even though the Major Archeparchy is expected to be small, the Marthoma Pontifical Shrine in Kodungallur is expected to be elevated as a "Pro-Cathedral", where the Installation of the 4th Major Archbishop will take place while a new Cathedral is built. [2] The Marthoma Pontifical Shrine was made in 1953 as a landmark to Thomas the Apostle landing in Kodungallur in 52 AD. In 1609, Pope Paul V had also made Kodungallur, the Headquarters of the Syro Malabar Church. [5]

Hierarchy edit

The Major Archeparchy will be under the governance of the "Major Archbishop of Kodungallur", currently called the Major Archbishop of Erankulam-Angamaly and will be under control of the Syro-Malabar Synod of Bishops. [2] The Current Major Archbishop is Raphael Thattil.
