editIn June 2015, it was announced that Walt Disney Pictures had hired Kirsten "Kiwi" Smith and Karen McCullah to write a screenplay for a remake of Sister Act (1992), with Allison Shearmur set to serve as a producer.[1] By August 2017, Whoopi Goldberg expressed interest in directing a potential third installment of the franchise.[2] In December 2018, it was announced that Disney had redeveloped the production into a legacy-sequel to Sister Act and Sister Act 2. Regina Hicks and Karin Gist were hired as co-screenwriters, while the film was intended to receive exclusive distribution through Disney+.[3]
The film was officially confirmed to be in development by the studio in December 2020 at Disney Investor Day, with Goldberg reprising her role as Deloris and Tyler Perry producing.[4] In September 2021, Madhuri Shekar joined the production as an additional writer, with Tim Federle set to direct after impressing the studio with his work on High School Musical: The Musical: The Series and Better Nate Than Ever.[5] On November 3, 2021, Perry confirmed that work on the screenplay had already began.[6]
In February 2024, it was revealed that Sheryl Lee Ralph would reprise her role as Florence Watson in the film.[7] In June of the same year, following a cast thirty-year reunion event on The View, Goldberg stated that the script is finished and that the cast is waiting for the official production approval from the studio.[8]
