Mariners Base Camp-Ultras Mohunbagan[1], also known simply as Base Camp, is an organised group of football fans who support the Mohun Bagan Super Giant, and all the other age–group teams as well as other entities under Mohun Bagan- at almost every home and away game. They are passionate and dedicated ultras supporters' group associated with the historic Indian football club. Formed in late 2015, MBC has played a pivotal role in shaping the vibrant fan culture surrounding the club. Their commitment to fostering an electric atmosphere at Mohun Bagan's matches[2] and promoting ultras culture in Indian football is well-recognised.

Formation & Purpose edit

Mariners Base Camp was founded by a small group of devoted Mohun Bagan fans who shared a common vision of creating an electric atmosphere at the club's matches. Since its inception, the group has grown into a community of over two thousand members with a shared goal of spreading ultra's culture in the Indian football circuit. Their primary objective is to provide unwavering support to Mohun Bagan, both at home[5] and away[6] matches, inspiring the players and uplifting the spirits of fellow Mohun Bagan fans, commonly referred to as Mariners(Due to the club's crest of a sailing boat). Mariners Base Camp[7] has also been recognised as a vertical of the Blue Pilgrims, the ultras community of the Indian national football team.

Tifos & Choreography edit

A distinctive feature of Ultras Mohun Bagan is their impressive tifos and choreographed displays. These visually stunning exhibitions are often showcased during essential matches, transforming the stadium into a spectacle of colours and messages of encouragement. Mariners Base Camp has been pioneering the tifosi culture in Indian football for more than two decades now. After Mohunbagan secured the 2019-20 I-League ( Club's 5th overall premier national championship) Base camp unveiled a 50x60ft long Tifo showcasing Kibu Vicuna then head coach of Mohun Bagan.

Mariners Base camp also holds the current Indian national record for the biggest 3D tifo[8] unveiled during the inaugural Home match for the 2023-24 CFL season. The base camp also unveiled the 'Divided by religion, United by Mohunbagan'[9] Tifo during the 2019-20 I league season as a social commentary against religion-based division in the country. Which had been widely applauded and appreciated.

Chants & Atmosphere edit

Mariners Base Camp is renowned for its passionate chants and songs that resonate throughout the stadium during matches. The members are highly regarded due to the nature of the electrifying atmosphere and pyro[10] shows. A few of the iconic Mohunbagan chants are also coined by the group which are now synonymous with Mohun Bagan's identity and influenced heavily in the[11] Pop-Culture.

  • Sune Ja Sune Ja re Khola rekhe kan (শুনে যা শুনে যা খোলা রেখে কান)[12]
  • Dale Dale O[13]
  • Amader Surjo Merun (আমাদের সূর্য মেরুন)[14]

The famous viking clap had been adapted by Mariners' base camp, and it had become a ritual to celebrate win by synchronised viking claps between the supporters and the players.

Community work & Volunteering[15] edit

Beyond their involvement during matches, Mariners Base Camp is actively engaged in community initiatives and charitable works, often in collaboration with its wings and numerous associate fan clubs. The members use the Base Camp platform to make positive contributions to society, reflecting their commitment to the club's values and the broader community. One notable initiative was their involvement in "Rebuild Bengal"[16] after the catastrophic Super Cyclonic Storm Amphan in May 2020.

Opposition to ATK Merger & #RemoveATK edit

After winning their 5th National Premier ( NFL/I-League) Mohunbagan's football team was merged with the reigning ISL champions ATK. The merger was officially announced in January 2020 after months of negotiations and discussions between the respective club management and franchise owners group. As a result, a new entity was formed under the name of ATK Mohun Bagan or simply ATKMB. The club adopted the logo of Mohunbagan's iconic sailing boat and retained the colours of green and maroon.[17] Although the historic 1889 - Mohunbagan's foundation year was dropped from the crest. The merger was mostly not welcomed by the majority of Mohunbagan fan base[18], and the Mariners Base camp took the stewardship of leading the peaceful protest. #Breakthemerger[19] and #removeatk[20] became synonymous with Base camp. They kept on showing their support for Mohun Bagan's legacy for the next three seasons through tifos, chants, and pyro shows. Although the majority of the members had boycotted watching the match in the Stadium.

Dawn of a new era edit

The start of the 2023-24 season saw the unveiling of the Mohun Bagan Super Giant logo, reverting to the original[21] design of the crest and including the club's founding year, 1889. The club also reintroduced the classic green and maroon vertical stripes in their home kit- which Mariners Base Camp warmly received. The group celebrated these changes and showed their support by unveiling a 3D Tifo[22] during the opening CFL game.

Rivalry & Partnerships edit

MohunBagan and EastBengal rivalry[23] had been considered almost eternal. A rivalry which now is more than 100 years strong, tested new blood with ultras movement in India.[24] East Bengal Ultras and Mariners' Base Camp - Ultras Mohunbagan often considered as rivals in their own terms.[25] During 2021, Copa 90[26] showcased Kolkata Derby as Asia's Biggest Rivalry[27], where members from both supporters groups have been interviewed separately. Another media channel called Superpower Football[28] also had covered the Kolkata Ultra's essence in one of their video[29].Mariners' Base Camp also shares a series of banter with southern ultras Manjapadda and West Block Blues. Although unlike their European counterparts none of the Indian Ultras group get into hooliganism, or fights.

Mariners' Base Camp are also proud partners of Blue Pilgrims, or the National team ultras. Both MBC and EBU had showcased their view through Tifos and other mediums against political and social issues. In January 2020, during the Kolkata derby Mariners' Base Camp had shown protest[30] against CAA & NRC[31].During 2019 world cup qualifiers match against Bangladesh, a co-operative tifo had been unfurled by the combined effort of Mariners' Base Camp, East Bengal Ultras, and MSC Ultras[32](Mohammedan sporting Supporter group).

Wings & Partnerships edit

Mariners' Base Camp - Ultras Mohun Bagan[33](MBC) has a diverse array of wings that extend its reach and influence across the country. The MBC Girls wing[34] empowers and promotes women's football, fostering a new generation of talented female players & supporters alike. Meanwhile, North Bengal Mariners[35] represents the club's fanbase in the picturesque region of North Bengal, bringing together supporters from the hills and plains. Additionally, Mariners in Kerala[36] showcases the club's widespread fan following in the southern state of Kerala, contributing to the vibrant tapestry of Indian football culture. Together, these wings of Mariners Base Camp exemplify the enduring passion and commitment of Mohun Bagan's dedicated supporters across India.
