Hamiye Çolakoğlu (15 September 1933, Sürmene, Trabzon - 31 December 2014, Çankaya, Ankara) Turkish ceramic artist and academician.

Biography edit

Hamiye Çolakoğlu was born in 1933 at Trabzon,Sürmene. She completed her primary and middle school education in Ankara. Her family was influential in her growing interest in arts, namely, painting. In 1951, while still a high school student, she participated in a portrait competition in Munich and won first place. In 1952, she held her first solo exhibition, and the following year she opened a thematic exhibition commemorating the "500th Anniversary of the Conquest of Istanbul". In 1959, she went to Florence with a scholarship and studied at the Istituto Statale D'arte per la Ceramica (State Institute of Ceramic Art). In addition to ceramic art, the artist developed herself in the fields of painting and stage decoration, and opened an exhibition in Naples during this period. She also took courses on Art History and Italian Literature at the University of Perugia.[1] After returning to his country in 1965, she established her own ceramic studio and continued her work there. Çolakoğlu worked as an art consultant at the Söğütsen Ceramic Factory between 1978 and 1980, and in 1983 she founded the Ceramics Department within the Faculty of Fine Arts at Hacettepe University. The artist continued his academic career here until her death[2], and took part in dozens of national and international art events throughout her life.[3][4]

The artist, who was among those[5] that brought vitality and innovation to Turkish ceramic art, especially in the 1970s, along with contemporaries such as Candeğer Furtun, Atilla Galatalı, Güngör Güner, İlgi Adalan, Mustafa Tunçalp, Erdinç Bakla and Jale Yılmabaşar, was awarded the title of State Artist in 1998. Çolakoğlu died in Ankara on December 31, 2014 at the age of 80 and was buried at Karşıyaka Cemetery in Yenimahalle.[6][7] After her death, a ceramics museum named after the artist was opened at Hacettepe University in 2020, where her works were exhibited.[8]

Her works are in the collections of many public institutions in Türkiye and abroad. Among the museums in Türkiye that host a permanent collection of the artist's works are the Painting and Sculpture Museums in Istanbul and Ankara, Ziraat Bank Museum, Hamiye Çolakoğlu Ceramic Museum and İbrahim Bodur International Ceramic Museum. The collections of The Grand National Assembly of Türkiye, Çankaya Mansion, The Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Emlakbank and Şekerbank are also among the places where Çolakoğlu's works are exhibited. Abroad, the Janus Pannonius Múzeum in Hungary, the International Ceramics Museum in Egypt, the Ein Hod Artist Village Museum in Israel and the Sesto Fiorento State Institute of Porcelain Art in Italy host works created by the artist.
