Christian Svarfvar (born 1982) is a Swedish violinist.
Early Life and education edit
Svarfvar was raised in a family of musicians. He started his musical career under the guidance of his father, Sven-Ole Svarfvar, former 1st Concertmaster of the Norwegian Opera and Swedish Chamber Orchestra.
At the age of twelve, he made his solo debut with the Mendelssohn violin concerto alongside the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, marking an early milestone in his career.
Continuing his musical education, Svarfvar pursued studies at the Stockholm Royal College of Music and at the Juilliard School in New York under the tutelage of Prof. Robert Mann
Svarfvar's professional trajectory reached new heights with his Stockholm debut, where he performed the Carl Nielsen violin concerto alongside the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic, conducted by Hannu Lintu.
Musical career edit
In 2008, Christian was appointed "rising star" by the European Concert Hall Organization (ECHO). This recognition led to solo performances to many of the world's esteemed concert stages, including venues like the Concertgebouw, Musikverein, Bozar, and Cité de la Musique, Kölner Philharmonie, Birmingham Symphony and Luxembourg Philharmonie. Subsequently, he made his debut recital at New York's Carnegie Hall, as part of the Distinctive Debuts series.[1][2][3]
As a chamber musician, Svarfvar has performed and collaborated with musicians as Janine Jansen, Julian Rachlin, Clemens Hagen, Tabea Zimmerman, Frans Helmersson, Martin Fröst[4], Maxim Rysanov, and Boris Brovtsyn.[5][6]
Notably, Svarfvar's repertoire extends beyond traditional boundaries, with collaborations alongside contemporary composers such as Howard Shore, Chaya Czernowin, Anders Hillborg, and Kaija Saariaho.
One example is his premiere performance[7] of Howard Shore's violin concerto "Eastern Promises," which was conducted by Shore himself and performed with the Royal Stockholm Philharmonic Orchestra. Shore is a three-time Oscar-winning composer known for his work on films such as "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy and "The Hobbit."
Svarfvar's discography comprises approximately ten recordings, including three collaborations with the London Philharmonic Orchestra[8][9][10]. His two latest albums comprise "Infinite Bach - J.S. Bach Recomposed," a reimagining of J.S. Bach's four violin concertos, and "The Symphonic Touch of Benny Andersson," a symphonic reinterpretation of compositions by Benny Andersson. Both recorded in collaboration with the London Philharmonic Orchestra,[11] [12][13] [14]
