initial concerns

What is the point of this category? Why should we delimit municipalities as opposed to cities+towns and villages? --Joy [shallot] 14:22, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Another thing I noticed that User:Physchim62 did was to *move* some villages from the village category and into the municipality category. What's the logic in that, when a municipality is almost inextricably linked with at least one, eponymous village? --Joy [shallot] 14:24, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

And some villages for which there are articles are not linked to an eponymous municipality. It is sensible to separate the two types, as is done for many other European countries (Switzerland, for example). Physchim62 (talk) 14:27, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

That doesn't answer my question. Bibinje for example is both a village and a municipality. There is no point in categorizing it as one and not the other. --Joy [shallot] 14:32, 28 June 2006 (UTC)

Also I don't quite understand what you mean by your first sentence. We did not have the category for municipalities until you created it, so *all* villages which had eponymous municipalities were not "linked" as municipalities, because it was consistent the other way. Naselje

Naselje (settlements) needs to be used. I'm not sure why villages have a category. Settlements are used for statistical purposes, and don't have their own government. There are only three municipal divisions according to the Croatian statistics organization:

1. Grad translates to "Town", which is generally defined as a city. It's a local unit of government with its own town board.

2. Opcina translates to "Municipality", which is generally defined as a lesser city. In the United States, these would be defined as townships. They are usually a collection of smaller settlements under one authority. They are also a local unit of government with their own municipal boards.

3. Naselje translates to "Settlement" which is generally defined as an village. In the United States, these would be defined as unincorporated villages, and are not local units of government. They are ONLY used for statistical purposes. Naselje/Settlements are what makes up Opcina/Municipalities, and Grads/Towns. These should be given their own page.

Does this make sense to all? ONLY these three categories need to remain in a list of municipalities for Croatia, as they are the only governmental and statistical local divisions defined by the Croatian statistical department. --Criticalthinker 04:56, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

Agree. This category should be for općina, not naselje. There are enough grad for them to have their own category as well, which should be a subcategory here (a grad has all the powers of an općina) as well as a member of the higher categories. Where we have articles on individual naselje, these should be categorised under the counties: there are too many villages in Croatia to usefully fit within a single category. This would finally make Croatian categorization consistant with the rest of Europe (see above). Physchim62 (talk) 11:01, 11 January 2007 (UTC)

I'm not so sure you agree with me. I think there needs to be three category pages, one for grads, one for općina, and one for naselje since they are all statistical divisions. We need a seperate page explaining what naselje are, so that people understand how that they are just statisitical divisions that make up grads and općina. The number of naselje shouldn't discourage anyone for making a category of each. There is something like 400+ which isn't all that much when you consider every tiny town in my country of the USA is given a page. --Criticalthinker 03:35, 12 January 2007 (UTC)

Towns and Places

Have we agreed how we are going to organize these? I propose that we just use "Town" (legally "Grad") and then "Place" which could be village or community. I've put most of the Otak Pag stuff together and many of the communities are "tourist places". Please let me know what is the best to do? —comment added by mrdvt92 04:56, 14 April 2008 (UTC)
