A tool is available for gathering statistics for the number of hits for the projects pages. An example output for the WikiProject Astronomical objects project is here. - Just to update people on this. The stats started on 1 September so will have to wait until October for full results. The current most popular page by a long way is Arctic Monkeys with 84,655 views or 7,696 views per day. This is followed by Wuthering Heights with 75,661 views or 6,878 views per day. The highest stub rated article (though it could really be changed to start) comes in at 101st Halifax Gibbet with 3,463 views or 315 views per day. Keith D (talk) 00:30, 11 September 2009 (UTC)

Tagging biographical articles
Hi, just wanted to know the view of members on biographical articles with regard to tagging for the project. At the moment I have tagged very few of these articles and the time has come to define the scope of what we cover. We could go down several routes here - from only tagging those who were born in Yorkshire to the other extreme of tagging everyone who have had a connection to Yorkshire, including all of those who have played for one of the many sports teams that we have in the area. On the other hand we could only tag those that are prominent Yorkshire people (we would have to define this). Has anyone got any views on which approach to take? There seems to be two Middlethorpe articles for places in Yorkshire, and another one elsewhere. It seems to me that there should be hatnotes and perhaps a disambiguation page for these articles. Also, {{Middlethorpe Hall]] article should say which one it is in. Can some Yorkshire editor help?--DThomsen8 (talk) 00:15, 27 August 2009 (UTC)
- There's a perfectly adequate dab page at Middlethorpe; I've clarified Middleton Hall (and added a ref to the mention of the Hall on the Middlethorpe, North Yorkshire article; hatnotes aren't needed on pages with disambiguations, which wouldn't be reached by someone just typing "Middlethorpe" (they could be added, but some deletionist would quite likely remove them!). Project watchlist
Hi, just to let you know that the project watchlist is out of date as I am unable to generate a new one since the changes to software last week. The script is giving errors trying to get the list of tagged articles. Hopefully I can get it resolved quickly but will have to wait on expertise of others. - As you van see, Google translation is a bit hit and miss. S Marshall was very helpful when I asked for a translation, although it was only a paragraph and that is a very long article. It might be worth asking several people in Category:Translators fr-en if they have time to translate (making it clear you're asking around so that they don't start as efforts could be duplicated). I'm gearing up to move the unsourced content from this list to its talk page (which is, I'm afraid, all of it!). Although WP:V applies to all pages, WP:BLP is particularly important for such lists.
I want to alphabetise the list according to surname (what they are famous for can be POV and arbitary) akin to the List of people from Manchester and others (List of people from Cornwall). After a recent request, I added WikiProject Yorkshire to the list of projects to compile monthly pageview stats for. The data is the same used by http://stats.grok.se/en/ but the program is different, and includes the aggregate views from all redirects to each page. The stats are at Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire/Popular pages.
The page will be updated monthly with new data. The edits aren't marked as bot edits, so they will show up in watchlists. You can view more results, request a new project be added to the list, or request a configuration change for this project using the toolserver tool. Hello all,
Just wondering what would be the best received course of action for the List of people from Todmorden. My bold view is that this list should be speedily redirected to a List of people from Calderdale (complementing district-level entries such as the List of people from Tameside and List of people from Barking and Dagenham). Naturally, as the list is unreferenced, the status quo isn't feasible per WP:BLP etc, so any action needs to be fairly rapidly applied I think. --Jza84 | Talk 21:03, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- I do not think redirecting would be much use, as all of the entries on the list have wikilinks for them then the linked articles should have the references on them to add to this page. - Yes, sorry, I wasn't very clear. I should've said too that upon (cursory) investigation, none of the articles listed provide any inline reference for association with Todmorden. For example, take a look through the first 10 entries - no reference what so ever (and in a couple of cases no mention at all) for a connection to the town (infact, a couple even contradict the list: Innes Ireland article uses Mytholmroyd, not Todmoreden for example). --Jza84 | Talk 23:20, 9 February 2010 (UTC)
- I suppose this raises the thorny question of what does it mean to be from a place. Does it mean: born there, once lived there, worked there, went to college there, appeared on the stage there or once bought fish and chips and a pint on the way through there!!? - There have been a couple of discussions about this over the years: I think the largest was at WP:ENGLAND (but it may have been WP:UK - it was years ago I'm afraid). The consensus at the time was to deliberately use the format "list of people from X" because "from" was ambiguous, and allows for an inclusive approach. Tim Bobbin is associated with Milnrow (Rochdale borough), but was born in Stretford (Trafford borough), but he appears on both lists (with refs). I suppose it could be revisited, but I'm personally comfortable with the present format. Incidently, Innes Ireland flatly doesn't include anything about Todmorden, birthplace, abode, or any other connection.
- However, my secondary point related to the fact that this list is completely unreferenced rather than the format of the title. The old chestnut that references will appear on their individual articles is (surprise, surpurise) not so (articles are stand-alone pieces so need inline references on their own page, not another). That's not a dig at Keith D, rather those who have been adding the material and defend it on this basis, which happens periodically. This contravienes all that good stuff like WP:V, WP:OR and importantly WP:BLP.
- My original, original point was one of consistency, sustainability and definition. The project seems to be moving towards district level lists. This has several benefits (at least in the short-mid term) such as allowing those small, rural, hamlet, suburban, outlying areas to have their entries listed (a List of people from Kirklees would include Patrick Stewart where a Huddersfield list would not). It also provides consistency (incidently with those listed at the List of people from West Yorkshire and List of people from South Yorkshire). I envisage in the more distant future, once the district level articles have been populated, we can always split these into settlement level lists (even have them running parallel), but for now, I'd rather populate Kirklees and Calderdale lists to complete the sets. --Jza84 | Talk 12:39, 10 February 2010 (UTC)

Thanks. I'm comfortable with the format as you have explained it. (However, I do get concerned about the "name droppers" because I like to add refs to articles/lists when I can, and though there is probably a true if tenuous association of a person with a place it's often impossible to find a reliable source.) How do historical figures fit into this, please? eg William Marshall (agricultural writer) born in Sinnington, North Yorkshire. It's now in Ryedale district but was in a Wapentake of the North Riding at the time of his birth and death? Use present location of village? (It's those flippin' boundary changes again!!)--Harkey (talk) 19:34, 19 February 2010 (UTC)
- I know. I actually hate the boundary changes, and precisely for this reason!
- Basically - and this isn't a policy, just my view - I'd expect William Marshall (agricultural writer) to appear on the List of people from Ryedale. Yes this is anachronistic, but it has some benefits, namely those set out at point number 1 at WP:UCC, as well as being able to add a strap line "Notable people.... See also/further/main article: List of people from Trafford (as an example), to each and every village within the district. A List of people from Sinnington is never likely to be useful, nor is a List of people from the Ryedale wapentake; a List of people from North Yorkshire would probably be collossal; a List of people from Scarborough (i.e. wider borough) allows for an inclusive approach too.
- Does that help? I am aware that some of the LG areas (like Kirklees) are not conventional "locations" (dare I say, even unpopular), and I agree this is unfortunate, but I personally see this as the only effective way forwards for consistency, and I do think it harbours benefits. --Jza84 | Talk 23:40, 20 February 2010 (UTC)
- There needs to be some sectionalisation of the district into the individual places so that the individual place articles can refer to the section of the article for notable people related to that place. Or each entry needs to state where they are related to so the place articles have a hook into it and readers wanting to know about a place within the district can locate the people related to that place. - Apologies. I did move the Todmorden list to List of people from Calderdale, but spotted afterwards that there was no explicit mention of what connection was made to the place. I will try and help fix this.

Location grids
There has been several changes to location grids in West Yorkshire articles, mainly Leeds related, initially by IPs and today by a newly registered user. There have been questions as to the accuracy of the information supplied in these grids. Assuming we are retaining the grids on these articles then they need to be accurate and use the full 8-point compass directions for the information. Someone familiar with the Leeds area needs to do some checking on these grids to see if the information presented is accurate and the appropriate dabs applied to the links. Any comments or offers? Assessment of River Idle article
I have added four sections, a map and an image to River Idle, and have removed the stub tag from the page, but it is still rated as stub class on the discussion page. Anybody support the creation of an article for these moderately sized but impressive waterfalls? I'm just not sure where the notability line for Waterfalls comes into play. Does anybody know if they are called by another name as well? Thanks.

- Well they look kinda similar to Aysgarth Falls which does have an article (but no references at the moment). There isn't a problem with doing an article on it if the references are there to support it, but it might be better to do Waterfalls on the River Swale, which would have a bit more meat to it (though articles exist on Kisdon Force, Catrake Force etc they might be better served in an all encompassing article). - Do not think that there is any specific guidance on waterfall notability. Probably the general notability guidelines are the ones to go by. If there are sources then go ahead and create an article. I've just found this article, while looking into a (then) redlink to Yorkshire Herald in a new article on George Leeman. I found that there was a useful amount of info on this title, in the Newspapers of Yorkshire article in the section on the York Herald (earlier title of same paper), but no redirect to lead there (there is now). But the article has a confusing structure in which the "Defunct newspapers" section starts with a list of redlinks, implying that there's no info on those titles ... and then goes on to give info on most of them. It needs some sort of cleanup, or possibly splitting off into separate articles for the major titles. The list of "defunct papers" also didn't include any Leeds titles (perhaps any/many non-York-based?) until I added the Intelligencer and the Mercury as a quick fix. At present the article (created in 2007 by an editor who hasn't edited in the last 12 months) seems sadly wasted, as there are hardly any incoming links to make it available to readers seeking info on the papers it discusses.
I'm not feeling inspired to overhaul the article myself at the moment, but someone out there might like to have a look at it? PamD (talk) 07:19, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

- Well spotted, GT: umpteen editors have edited it over the years without noticing (caring?) that it was copyvio! And the fact that it's from a section on "The City of York" explains the lack of non-York titles in a WP article purportedly covering the whole county. That editor doesn't seem to have created any other new articles (or they've been deleted as copyvio in their entirety and vanished from his/her record?). PamD (talk) 21:04, 12 July 2010 (UTC)

The wars of the Roses article is currently High-importance I considered changing it however would like to get other views. I think it should be Top-importance as it is of UK importance and plays a big part of Yorkshire history, please share your views.ROOSTER (talk) 18:01, 10 August 2010 (UTC)
- I deliberately kept the Top class very small (15) initially so that it would be manageable. The articles are just the main city articles and the county articles, together with a couple of important biographies that have been identified. A number of those in High could be considered Top but I was trying to be focused and intended to promote others as progress on the 15 articles was made, but progress is very slow on them. Ilkley external links
Should a local community website and the council's official tourism site be External links in Ilkley? Opinions differ at present - do chip in. PamD (talk) 18:31, 12 September 2010 (UTC)
I think so - I only have problems when the external link is to an obviously commercial site whose primary purpose is to take money from advertising and directory entries, rather than to one whose primary purpose is to disseminate information. --Langcliffe (talk) 10:20, 13 September 2010 (UTC)

Yorkshire articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release
Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

Suburbs of Kingston upon Hull
I started looking at suburbs of Kingston upon Hull when I saw Sutton-on-Hull on the Wikipedia:WikiProject Yorkshire/to do, then I noticed that even some large suburbs of Kingston upon Hull didn't even have a wikipedia page, so I creatted them and I noticed that Newland, East Ella, Sculcoates, Stoneferry, Sutton-on-Hull, Sutton Ings, Summergangs and Marfleet are actually shown as bigger on my A-Z Great Britain Road Atlas than places like Harehills, Moss Side, Chorlton-cum-Hardy but yet there is a huge amount of information about them and there are even places like Chorlton-on-Medlock and Chapeltown, West Yorkshire that are not even shown on my road atlas, but yet still have alot of information about them. I would like to see if we could get them to as big or bigger than articles like Chorlton-cum-Hardy. The following articles are shown as bigger on my road atlas than the places listed above.

- There are many other areas of Hull that do not have articles about them as yet.
- Orchard Park
- Greatfield
- Bilton Grange
- are a few examples. Though like other cities it is often difficult to determine the boundaries of the different areas. May be a good idea to start by doing what Sheffield did initially and create articles for the wards of the city which have definite boundaries detailing the areas in each one and then split out the area information into a separate article when it becomes large enough to sustain its own article. Hamlets
User Hamish Griffin is creating stubs[1] and redlinks for every placename on the OS map as far as I can see. In my opinion they are mostly non notable and the redlinks won't ever be written. I think they should be deleted.--J3Mrs (talk) 12:33, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

- I have taken the trouble to attempt to improve some of these articles. They are obviously created just to increase his new article count. Poor spelling, inaccuracy and misleading and obviously written by someone with no idea of the area. As an example Fox Royd is marked on a map but it was never a hamlet, it is a lane that has given its name to the immediate locality. - I would have thought that it makes more sence to have seperate articles for every place on the OS map even if they only have a few sentences as they still do help build a better encyclopedia and they can be expanded at a later date, for example Thorncliffe, West Yorkshire has been expanded, and even if an article cannot be expanded for example Roydhouse, why merge it and I would have thought that one day someone may expand it. And anyway why merge Fox Royd as there is no content on Fox Royd in Thornhill, West Yorkshire, and even content was moved to it I still don't think it would be helpfull to the reader Hamish Griffin (talk) 08:57, 14 October 2010 (UTC)
- I have mentioned Foxroyd in the Thornhill article so it could easily be merged. It makes more sense to have articles on notable places that can be expanded with reliable references. DST Leconfield Wiki
DST is in the process of updating information on wikipedia. Turbojo who started this page is also a member of DST working in the same department. - The information was removed as a copyright violation as it was almost the same as the external website. you also removed existing history material from the article about detail prior to setting up DST. You cannot add material which is copyright in this way without changing the copyright status on the website that it came from to be compatible with our license or following the rules on WP:Copyright and in particular Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission. I have created together with Smallman12q a toolserver tool that shows a weekly-updated list of cleanup categories for WikiProjects, that can be used as a replacement for WolterBot and this WikiProject is among those that are already included (because it is a member of Category:WolterBot cleanup listing subscriptions). Image copyright
Hi, do we have anyone who knows about copyright of images, on the project. There is currently a deletion discussion on Commons about the deletion of an image of a plaque on Lendal Bridge in York that was taken by a project member. Is a picture of the plaque copyright just because it is recent and there is a paragraph of text? If anyone has any experience in this area then comments appreciated in the deletion review.

Prepping the Battle of Towton for FAC
The 550th anniversary of the Battle of Towton is about to arrive, and I plan to nominate it to appear as a Today's Featured Article on the Main Page on that day (29 March 2011 or 17 April 2011). I have made substantial changes (use of higher quality reliable sources, expansion, etc) to the Battle of Towton (the pre-change article was a Start-class), and nominated it for A-Class assessment at WP:MILHIST. That should cover the military aspects of the battle. I would like to invite further comments or suggestions at Talk:Battle of Towton. The plan is to nominate it at WP:FAC by the end of January 2011. Potential Wikipedia presence at computing event in Wakefield, Sat 16 Apr 2011
A number of RISC OS users have recently established WP:RISCOS. At the forthcoming Wakefield show, there is the possibility (yet to be suggested to either project members or the show's organisers) of having a presence there. The project is concerned with article quality, something which is somewhat difficult to manage amongst certain enthusiasts!
The question to members of this group is If we were to have a stand at the show, would any members of WP:YORKS be interested in being there? Your presence would generally be to assist in explaining Wikipedia principles - but of course, you may even recruit a few local members too! What are the project feelings about {{Geographic location}} appearing in articles about places? Personally on any article that is beyond stub and has an infobox with a map and co-ords in it, I feel that this templat adds nothing of value to the article and looks appalling and I want to delete them on sight. To me they are nothing more than a list of places not necessarily added with any great thought given to what locations to include e.g. a mish-mash of villages, towns and cities inconsistent with the size of or proximity to the central location. Like I say I loathe them but if the concensus is that they do add I'm not going to die in a ditch over it. NtheP (talk) 13:46, 16 February 2011 (UTC)

Earl of Harewood
A new editor has edited the Earl of Harewood page to say that the 7th earl has died, 2011, though with no source (though none of the other dates in the same section are sourced, so not unreasonable). The same editor has tried to put 11 July 2011 in as death date in the infobox in George Lascelles, 7th Earl of Harewood (but couldn't get it quite right so left without making any change eventually). I can't find this in any news pages on Google. Does anyone know more? PamD (talk) 12:48, 11 July 2011 (UTC)

Hearth Tax of 1662 now transcribed for all three ridings
The Hearth Tax#Stuart period was introduced by Charles II in a fiscal emergency. Under its terms each liable householder was to pay one shilling for each hearth within their property. The records of all counties are being completely transcribed, analyzed and made available free online by Roehampton University. In addition to the West Riding I mentioned in Craven Roehampton University announced on 25 July 2011:
"We are pleased to announce that resources relating to Yorkshire East Riding (1672) and Yorkshire North Riding (1673) have recently been uploaded to the website. These resources include, a surname index, a statistical analysis and, where applicable, transcriptions of exemption certificates. All of these resources can be downloaded completely free of charge in fully-searchable PDF format. We think that Hearth Tax Online is a valuable resource and we would like it to be available to the widest possible audience. If you agree, please help us to spread the word by linking to Hearth Tax Online, Roehampton University from your own webpages."
Job to do - update constituency links
Judging by Special:WhatLinksHere/Elmet_(UK_Parliament_constituency) and similar pages, there are a lot of articles on places in Yorkshire which have infoboxes with out of date links to parliamentary constituencies (Elmet was abolished for 2010 election). If anyone is looking for a useful job to do ... ! (Of course not all links will be wrong: some will say which constituency a place used to be in, some are links from MPs etc.) PamD (talk) 14:17, 28 July 2011 (UTC)
What shall I add Aire Gap to ?
In working on the Craven page I find authorities often mention the Aire Gap, for example:
- "This depression is known as the Aire Gap, Skipton being at its eastern end and Hellifield at its western end” wrote T. D. Whitaker in 1878.
- “Aire Gap has been of considerable strategic importance in days gone by, with the castle at Skipton overseeing the general area” writes The Yorkshire Dales in 2011.
- On Bing maps. coord 54.00000 -2.16667 is a point labeled Aire Gap.
- When the Leeds Liverpool Canal decide against Hellifield it seems to have moved Aire Gap -- for the author of the Colne page says Colne and Nelson are in the Aire Gap.
So I have already drafted 600 words on the subject but I can’t decide where to put them. Should I
- start a new page called Aire gap
- include Aire gap on the Airedale page
- include Aire gap on the River Aire page
- include Aire gap on the Craven page ?
My quandary is:
- I’ve never started a page, it seems too daunting
- The Airedale page is in such sad need of development it would unbalance it.
- The River Aire page is so pretty I’d hate to intrude on it.
- Although Craven includes Aire gap, Craven is NOT Airedale for it also includes upper Wharefedale.

I wrote to the editor of the Dalesman magazine and he kindly replied "The Aire Gap has little to do with the river - it's the name given to a geological region carved out by glaciers through the Pennines via which roads, rail and the canal have been built to link east and west. Again it's difficult to pinpoint a start and finish but as a rough guide I would say the Craven Fault to the north and the region now known as the South Pennines - the higher gritstone ridges above Haworth etc. I would say Colne sits in the Aire Gap." I was also thinking that history was getting to the point of needing a sub article of History of Whitby but I would leave that until after a GA (unless they require it) if looking for an FA attempt. After East Yorkshire Family History Society appeared on the PROD list, I've done a bit of a cleanup on it and de-PRODded it (and added a redirect from the above abbreviation). But if there are any members out there who can flesh out the article further, please do so. In particular, the society's website mentions a "Grade 2 listed research centre" but I can't see anything more about it. (In fact the soc's website is a bit of a mess, and clicking on "Home" from various places leads to a gallery of photos of weddings over the years... !). - No idea, but you can see here that he's still getting them. I found that User talk:Homan's Copse redirected to his talk page - I guess that's the redirected user you mean - but as you say he's not on the list either. Was PRODded; as it was founded 1820 I feel sure there must be more evidence for notability around somewhere! Have removed a lot of unencyclopedic stuff and irrelevant external links, and de-prodded it, but someone interested in cricket might like to have a go at making it more securely notable. There is discussion at the above AfD as to which NHS hospitals should or should not be considered notable, and how the bar should be assessed for passing WP:GNG, that could do with wider input.
Wikipedia talk:WikiProject National Health Service seems slightly moribund, but I have posted there saying that it might be useful for that project to set out a note of what sort of things a basic entry-level article on an NHS hospital should aim to contain; and perhaps co-ordinate a drive to turn List of hospitals in England blue, at least for as many hospitals as are considered do pass notability, in case anyone would be prepared to put a shoulder to the wheel on this. Royal Surrey County Hospital seems to me a reasonable example of the sort of facts a basic stub article should aim to contain. Jheald (talk) 09:21, 27 September 2011 (UTC)

Changes to background colour of front page
The blue background was chosen deliberately as this is the background colour of the Yorkshire flag. Any changes need to be made by consensus, please.--Harkey (talk) 16:44, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
- The background of the Yorkshire flag is indeed blue (File:FlagOfYorkshire.PNG), but CCCCFF = is purple, not blue. So, why are we using purple? Frietjes (talk) 17:04, 14 October 2011 (UTC)
- So, alter the shade slightly. Going for a nondescript beige isn't the answer. There are many colourblind users to whom that would mean nothing. Anyway, I may be sad, but I see it as a light blue. - Yes, you are right, to use the Pantone Blue 300, as registered, would be impractical. I would like to put the suggested change on hold for a while to see if there are any other opinions, though.--Harkey (talk) 09:59, 15 October 2011 (UTC)
- Personally I cannot see the need for any change to this and would suggest that we revert back to what we had before and to revert the change of the {{Thanks WPYorks}} template to Gold instead of the same as the colour scheme of the rest of the project items.
