Cat:War of the Pacific

Hi guys, tell me do you really think this cat shouldnt belong the the Cat:Peru tree?, I believe it should be included into Cat:History of Peru what do you think? user:andersmucician —Preceding unsigned comment added by 190.42.233.135 (talk) 01:33, 23 February 2008 (UTC)

Not dead just not as active as before. Namely because I have been in school for the past several months. I still have this page as well as several other Peru-project and Peru-related articles on my watchlist and regularly respond to changes in them. I'm pretty sure Victor and Ericbronder are still active and a few other Peru members might still be active too.--Jersey Devil (talk) 05:09, 18 April 2008 (UTC)

Cusco top importance status

do you seriously think the project (as an effort of improving teh most notblane articles) should consider Cuzco as a top one??? cuz the city contributes less than 10% of the GDP. seriously think about it, Lima should be in the top... —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.230.71.183 (talk) 22:25, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Hello, for guidelines on which articles are top importance and why check out Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru/Assessment/Top. In the case of Cusco, its top importance is a consequence of its historical significance. Further comments are welcome at Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Peru/Assessment. --Victor12 (talk) 22:53, 23 April 2008 (UTC)
just read Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru/Assessment/Top, will return later to counter that page. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 201.230.71.183 (talk) 23:03, 23 April 2008 (UTC)

Draft Guidelines for Lists of companies by country - Feedback Requested

Within WikiProject Companies I am trying to establish guidelines for all Lists of companies by country, the implementation of which would hopefully ensure a minimum quality standard and level of consistency across all of these related but currently disparate articles. The ultimate goal is the improvement of these articles to Featured List status. As a WikiProject that currently has one of these lists within your scope, I would really appreciate your feedback! You can find the draft guidelines here. Thanks for your help as we look to build consensus and improve Wikipedia! - Richc80 (talk) 13:52, 26 May 2008 (UTC)

"Did you know..." section at Portal:Peru

The "Did you know..." section at Portal:Peru has been revamped. There are now some fifty "Did you know..." hooks rotating randomly on the Portal Page. However, we could use a lot more. If any user knows an interesting and referenced fact from any Peru related article you can make a nomination so that it can appear on Portal:Peru. Guidelines can be found at Portal:Peru/Did you know. --Victor12 (talk) 16:33, 2 July 2008 (UTC)

Articles flagged for cleanup

Currently, 558 of the articles assigned to this project, or 13.2%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 18 June 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. Subsribing is easy - just add a template to your project page. If you want to respond to this canned message, please do so at my user talk page. --B. Wolterding (talk) 17:57, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Peru

A collection of Wikipedia articles is being collected together as Wikipedia 0.7. This collection will be released on DVD later this year, and will be available for free download. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles; a team of copyeditors has agreed to help improve the writing upon request.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 03:16, 15 September 2008 (UTC)

Latin American cinema task force

A Latin American cinema task force has been proposed at WP:FILMS, which would include the cinema of Peru. Interested editors are encouraged to sign up - if there is enough interest, then the task force will be created! Many thanks, Girolamo Savonarola (talk) 20:31, 30 September 2008 (UTC)

Bot-assisted tagging

As you can see in Archive 3, User:SatyrBot/WikiProject new pages has a program to automatically tag all articles in certain categories with project tags. You can't just have it do everything in the Category:Peru tree because then you end up tagging Chileans who are in Category:War of the Pacific and all sorts of things like that. I have done the best that I can to generate a list of categories the articles in which could all be tagged with the PeruProjectBanner template. They are listed below. Please review them and let me know of any changes. Otherwise I will ask that the bot run the program. --Descendall (talk) 01:30, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

In what way does this bot interact with the AlexNewArtbot? Can the Alexbot also tag pages? --ErickAgain (talk) 16:52, 29 January 2009 (UTC).

I have no idea. I have been totally inactive on wikipedia for a year, so I don't know what bots are doing what tagging now. --Descendall (talk) 21:54, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
The list seems ok at a first glance. BTW, haven't we done this before? Also nice to see you around Descendall even if it's just for this. --Victor12 (talk) 17:01, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Good to see you too. I was practicing my excel and deduplication skills, so I figured I'd generate this list. We have done it before, as the archive shows, but that was a year ago and there are a lot of new articles and categories. This category list is way longer. --Descendall (talk) 21:54, 29 January 2009 (UTC)

Some more:

--ErickAgain (talk) 20:00, 29 January 2009 (UTC).

I excluded a bunch of soccer players and managers (all the major teams had a category) on the theory that at least some of the players and mangers are foreigners who do not have such an important tie to Peru. There are a lot of categories dealing with navy ships that I excluded. Many of these ships were US navy ships that were transferred to Peru after the US decided that they were out of date, and it would seem odd to me to put a Peru tag on an article the contents of which are almost entirely about the ship’s service during the Vietnam War. I also excluded stuff about people who died/were buried in Peru because I figure that most of the people who were actually from Peru fall under other categories and will be tagged, and in makes no sense to tag someone who by chance happened to die while visiting Peru. I think a lot of the rest of those other categories you list are empty – remember that we are tagging article in the category, but not article in the subcategories of a given category. We’ll have to look at them and decide which ones are worth tagging. --Descendall (talk) 21:54, 29 January 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, i agree, not all categories should be added. I just did a quick scan and made a diff with the categories already in the list. I didn't take time to look into them in more detail yet. Maybe we should also keep a list (somewhere) of the categories explicitely not included to refer to/prevent discussions later on. --ErickAgain (talk) 10:55, 30 January 2009 (UTC).
Okay, I added the sensical ones that actually have articles in them to the top of the list and put them at User:Descendall/Peru. I asked the bot to be run at User talk:SatyrBot/WikiProject new pages. --Descendall (talk) 19:20, 1 February 2009 (UTC)
Turns out that User:SatyrTN doesn't do this anymore. Oh well. --Descendall (talk) 04:44, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Coordinators' working group

Hi! I'd like to draw your attention to the new WikiProject coordinators' working group, an effort to bring both official and unofficial WikiProject coordinators together so that the projects can more easily develop consensus and collaborate. This group has been created after discussion regarding possible changes to the A-Class review system, and that may be one of the first things discussed by interested coordinators.

All designated project coordinators are invited to join this working group. If your project hasn't formally designated any editors as coordinators, but you are someone who regularly deals with coordination tasks in the project, please feel free to join as well. — Delievered by §hepBot (Disable) on behalf of the WikiProject coordinators' working group at 06:16, 28 February 2009 (UTC)

Article alerts

This is a notice to let you know about Article alerts, a fully-automated subscription-based news delivery system designed to notify WikiProjects and Taskforces when articles are entering Articles for deletion, Requests for comment, Peer review and other workflows (full list). The reports are updated on a daily basis, and provide brief summaries of what happened, with relevant links to discussion or results when possible. A certain degree of customization is available; WikiProjects and Taskforces can choose which workflows to include, have individual reports generated for each workflow, have deletion discussion transcluded on the reports, and so on. An example of a customized report can be found here.

If you are already subscribed to Article Alerts, it is now easier to report bugs and request new features. We are also in the process of implementing a "news system", which would let projects know about ongoing discussions on a wikipedia-wide level, and other things of interest. The developers also note that some subscribing WikiProjects and Taskforces use the display=none parameter, but forget to give a link to their alert page. Your alert page should be located at "Wikipedia:PROJECT-OR-TASKFORCE-HOMEPAGE/Article alerts". Questions and feedback should be left at Wikipedia talk:Article alerts.

Message sent by User:Addbot to all active wiki projects per request, Comments on the message and bot are welcome here.

GA Sweeps invitation

This message is being sent to WikiProjects with GAs under their scope. Since August 2007, WikiProject Good Articles has been participating in GA sweeps. The process helps to ensure that articles that have passed a nomination before that date meet the GA criteria. After nearly two years, the running total has just passed the 50% mark. In order to expediate the reviewing, several changes have been made to the process. A new worklist has been created, detailing which articles are left to review. Instead of reviewing by topic, editors can consider picking and choosing whichever articles they are interested in.

We are always looking for new members to assist with reviewing the remaining articles, and since this project has GAs under its scope, it would be beneficial if any of its members could review a few articles (perhaps your project's articles). Your project's members are likely to be more knowledgeable about your topic GAs then an outside reviewer. As a result, reviewing your project's articles would improve the quality of the review in ensuring that the article meets your project's concerns on sourcing, content, and guidelines. However, members can also review any other article in the worklist to ensure it meets the GA criteria.

If any members are interested, please visit the GA sweeps page for further details and instructions in initiating a review. If you'd like to join the process, please add your name to the running total page. In addition, for every member that reviews 100 articles from the worklist or has a significant impact on the process, s/he will get an award when they reach that threshold. With ~1,300 articles left to review, we would appreciate any editors that could contribute in helping to uphold the quality of GAs. If you have any questions about the process, reviewing, or need help with a particular article, please contact me or OhanaUnited and we'll be happy to help. --Happy editing! GA Reassessment of LANSA Flight 502

I have done a GA Reassessment of LANSA Flight 502 as part of the GA Sweeps project. The article is very close to meeting all the GA Criteria. There is one unreferenced section and some formatting issues along with two dead links that need to be repaired. My review is here. I am notifying all interested projects of this review and that I have put the article on hold for one week. Please contact me on my talk page if you have any questions. Peru articles have been selected for the Wikipedia 0.8 release

Version 0.8 is a collection of Wikipedia articles selected by the Wikipedia 1.0 team for offline release on USB key, DVD and mobile phone. Articles were selected based on their assessed importance and quality, then article versions (revisionIDs) were chosen for trustworthiness (freedom from vandalism) using an adaptation of the WikiTrust algorithm.

We would like to ask you to review the Peru articles and revisionIDs we have chosen. Selected articles are marked with a diamond symbol (♦) to the right of each article, and this symbol links to the selected version of each article. If you believe we have included or excluded articles inappropriately, please contact us at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8 with the details. You may wish to look at your WikiProject's articles with cleanup tags and try to improve any that need work; if you do, please give us the new revisionID at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.8. We would like to complete this consultation period by midnight UTC on Monday, October 11th.

We have greatly streamlined the process since the Version 0.7 release, so we aim to have the collection ready for distribution by the end of October, 2010. As a result, we are planning to distribute the collection much more widely, while continuing to work with groups such as One Laptop per Child and Wikipedia for Schools to extend the reach of Wikipedia worldwide. Please help us, with your WikiProject's feedback!

Puna Grassland: Changes and Suggestions

Hello all, I am working on a university project to improve the article on Puna Grasslands. Me and my classmates have done a rough draft (need to be revised and cited properly) for possible changes on the article. It would be great to hear ideas and suggestion to improve the work.

The Puna grassland ecoregion is a high elevation montane grassland in the southern high Andes, extending from southern Peru, though Bolivia, into northern Argentina. The term puna encompasses diverse ecosystems of the high Central Andes above 3400 m from northern Peru to northern Argentine. It is considered one of the eight Natural Regions in Peru[1] and extends south as far as northern Argentina and Chile.

Location The puna is found above the treeline and below the permanent snowline (between 3,200 - 3,500 and 4,500 - 5,000 m elevation). It extends from central Peru in the north, across the Altiplano plateau of Peru and Bolivia, and south along the spine of the Andes into northern Argentina and Chile.[1]

Ecoregions The term puna encompasses diverse ecosystems of the high Central Andes above 3400 m from northern Peru to northern Argentine distinguished between wet/moist puna, dry puna and desert puna.

Wet/Moist Puna This ecoregion is a high elevation, wet, montane grassland in the southern high Andes, occurring from northern Peru to northern Bolivia. The wet puna shares its border on the west with the Sechura desert and the east with the wet Peruvian Yungas. Thise characteristically mountainous landscape contains high lakes, mountain valleys, snow covered mountains, and plateaues (Salcedo, 2001). The high elevation of the wet puna (4,200 to 5,000 m) causes the area to be extremely oligothermic. Temperatures shift from characteristic summer highs in the day and drop to winter lows at night. This extreme temperature shift has caused selective adaptation to occur and many endemic plants such as the Culcitium, Perezia and Polylepis center their diversity in the wet puna.

The ecoregion contains snow-capped peaks, glacial lakes, and several rivers that originate in the Cordilleras. The biggest lake in the ecoregion is Lake Titicaca, which is the highest lake in the world, at an elevation of 3,800 masl. The Suches and Tiwanacu rivers in Boliva are the lakes tributaries. The areas in the north surrounding Lake Titicaca have eight wet months, and the areas in the south have one to two wet months. The average precipitation in this region ranges from 500 to 700 mm . (Salcedo, 2001)

Dry Puna This ecoregion is a very dry, high elevation montane grassland of the southern high Andes. It extends into northern Chile and Argentina and east into western Bolivia occurring above 3500 m between the tree and permentant snow lines. The vegetation of the dry puna consists of tropical alpine herbs with dwarf shrubs. Within the dry puna are salt flats, high platuesplateaus, snow covered peaks and volcanoes (Salcedo, 2001).

Dry puna is distinguished from the other types of puna by its diminished annual rainfall. The dry puna has an 8-month long dry season and receives less than 400mm of rainfall each year. The region lies at an elevation of 3,500-5,000 m above sea level. The dry puna is oligothermic as well. The average temperatures in this ecoregion range from 8 to 11 oC and are lowest in the south. As a result of the elevation, varied tempuratures and lack of rainfall, the Central Andean Dry Puna is a unique ecoregion with highly adapted flora and fauna.

In the north of theThe northern region of the dry puna encompasses an even drier puna known as the desert puna. In the desert puna the average rainfall ranges from only 51 – 406 mm. The desert puna is dominated by the huge salt lakes and is known for the scattered halophytes around and in the depressions (Michelson, 2008). Also, tThese salt lakes are home to the endemic Andean Flamigo.

Soil Composition Puna soils are composed of an organich-rich layer and a stony layer. tThe average soil profile in the puna wasis 33 cm deep (Gibbon and others 2010). The Puna ecosystem has a low diversity of bacteria in its soils (Ferrero and others 2010). The Bacillus species dominate in tThe rhizospehere of Puna grasses are species poor dominated by Bacillus species., tThese organisms are often formare composed of dormant cells or spores thatto enable them to survive thein extreme climatic conditions that are found in the Puna ecosystem (Ferrero and others 2010). The bacteria Bacillus, Pseudomonas and Acinetobacter may play a vital role in the survival of native grasses in the Puna grasses due to the beneficial effects they have on the plants, nitrogen-fixing and aid in production of plan hormones (Ferrero and others 2010). Soil poverty and micro-site features as temperature, ph, organic matter and plant species may explain the why the low bacterial diversity in the native grasses of the Puna ecosystem (Ferrero and others 2010). The dominant bacterial community in the rhizosphere of Puna grasses were Actinobacteria, Firmicutes and Gammaproteobacteria and lastly Archaea, making this bacterial community similar to those found in desert soils (Ferrero and others 2010).

Flora Grassland Species (figure 3 in Phtogeographical paper) The puna is unusual because offlora is characterized by its unique assemblages of cushion and mat-forming species. Many of these species, most notably the large cushion Azorella compacta, have been intensively harvested for fuel and medicinal uses. Despite the low cover and overall diversity, the vegetation within this High-Andean belt displays relatively complex patterns of variation over small spatial scales spatial variation (Lambrinos and others 2006). In a study done in Peru the puna vegetation was composed of several grasses some of them asSome of the representative grass species include Jarava ichu, Calamagrostis vicunarum, Festuca dolichophylla and they had an average height of approximately 30 cm (Gibbon and others 2010). The puna belt which ranges from wet puna in the north of the Andes to dry Puna to the southwestern Andes is composed mainly of grasses (Poaceae) and shrubs of the Asteraceae family (Kuentz and others). Plant growth can be affected by atmospheric humidity with is usually low and the daily fluctuations in temperature (Kuentz and others). There are seven facies in the Puna which can be used to identify the main plants characteristic of each bioclimatic area. The mesotropical belt is characterized by the predominance of Asteraceae-type Ambrosia; the supratropical belt shows significant frequencies of Asteraceae-type Senecio; the orotropical belt is characterized by high frequencies of Apiaceae and includes Polylepis woodland and peat bogs; and the cryorotropical belt shows significant frequencies of Asteraceae-type Senecio and Apiaceae (Kuentz and others 2007). An altitudinal pollen gradient on the western slopes of the central Andes was revealed by the pollen study, with the succession of Asteraceae-type Ambrosia (1800–2200 m), Malvaceae (2700–3300 m), Asteraceae-type Senecio (3500–4100 m) and Apiaceae (above 4600 m). Up to 3000 m above the desert, the arid vegetation of the mountainous steppe is characterized by columnar cacti (Corryocactus, Haageocereus Oreocereus, Weberbauerocereus), xerophytic shrubs (Ambrosia, Balbisia, Encelia, Gochnatia, Krameria), and herbs (Eragrostis, Mastigostyla, Monnina, Spergularia, Urocarpidium)(Kuentz and others 2007). The lower-altitudinal facies is characterized by small trees and shrubs such as Asteraceae, Clusiaceae, Ericaceae, Lamiaceae, Loganiaceae, Melastomataceae, Rosaceae and Solanaceae. The puna sensu strict includes shrubs and plants of the Apiaceae, Asteraceae, Bromeliaceae, Cactaceae, Ephedraceae, Ericaceae, Fabaceae, Rosaceae and Solanaceae families. The upper-altitudinal facies is described as open xerophilous vegetation and is characterized by Asteraceae, Apiaceae, Cactaceae, Campanulaceae, Caryophyllaceae, Ephedraceae, Geraniaceae, Malvaceae, Plantaginaceae and Poaceae families (Kuentz and others 2007). Upper supratropical facies. Located between 3800 and 4000 m, this vegetation facies is associated with brown andic soils on ash-fall deposits. Its florae include many endemic plants: Chersodoma arequipensis, Diplostephium tacorense (Asteraceae) and Opuntia corotilla (Cactaceae). In the wettest areas, this facies is covered with dense shrubby vegetation including Asteraceae (Mutisia acuminata), Fabaceae and Solanaceae. In contrast, the driest areas are colonized by xerophilous and thorny plants, for example Corryocactus brevistylus (Cactaceae) (Kuentz and others 2007). In the central Andes an increase in Poaceae percentages in pollen diagrams may reflect an increase in precipitation (Kuentz and others 2007). Fauna Mammals The highland Puna desert is a biome with a good set ofthat ecompase relatively large reserves., sSome of the major species responsible for its conservation are the vicuna Lama vicugna)and guanaco(Lama guanicoe)(Ojeda and otherset al. 2003 ). Birds Bird populations in the puna ecosystem are surprisingly diverse for such a harsh and extreme environment. For example, theIn Lauca National Park there areincludes 148 species of birds, which. This number alone represents about one third of the entire Chilean bird population. Many of these species are rare and attract visitors to the area. One spectacle is the One example of this rare avifauna is the giant flightless Rhea (latin name), which is . This bird is similar to the ostrich found in the Old World This bird can reaching up to one meter in height and 20 kg in weight.. This bird can reach up to one meter in height and 20 kg in weight. Similar to this bird are also the Puna and Ornate Tinamou (Rundel, 2000). There are also a variety The Puna also includes a great variety of aquatic species particularly at Lago Chungara (in which country?). The Giant Coot constitutes one of these species. It is unique in that it forms nests the size of small islands. These nests are formed from mud and are used as protection against predators. Other species include the silvery grebe, chilean teal, and the diademed sandpiper-plover (one of the rarest shorebirds in the world) (Rundel, 2000).

Human Habitation Human habitation in the puna is widespread and tends to increase to the east, toward the moister areas. Native tubers and grains are cultivated over large areas of the central puna. The people inhabitants of this region cultivate native tubers (potatoes and maca) along with native grains such as barely . Alpacas, vicuñas, llamas, and guanacos are raised for wool. Almost the entirety of the puna is under the effect of animal grazing. Cattle, horses, and donkeys are localized in the wet/humid puna while Llama, sheep and alpaca can be raised in both the wet and drier areas of the puna (Michelson, 2008). The natural vegetation has been severely affected by livestock grazing, burning, firewood collection and clearance for cultivation. The camelids, goats and sheep in the area degrade the herbaceous vegetation making the life-cycle for the plants difficult to complete (UNESCO 1981). Fire often accompanies grazing as a management tool and is one of the main threats to the grasslands. The drier areas are being threatened with progression to desertification (Michelson, 2008). Carbon Storage Afforestation of puna at the tree line could generate revenues of US $1,374 per ha over the project lifetime via commercialization of the carbon credits from gains in aboveground carbon stocks. Grazing has been found to reduce aboveground carbon densities significantly. Puna sites with fire have a reduced mean soil carbon density compared to those without. Micro-climate or land use can have a more dominant effect on carbon stocks than slope or altitudinal effects. With improved grazing management, one site, assuming a carbon price of US $3.4 per CO2 would earn only USD 65,000. This amount would not be enough to maintain project cover expenses, instead if only aboveground and coarse root carbon stocks are considered than this would represent an income of USD $1,274 per ha. With constant management and monitoring this number could increase by two. Puna grasslands have less carbon storages the forest but more than transition zones.

Conservation Efforts/ Threats Puna grasslands are affected by numerous factors. Depending on how concentrated human settlement is in the area, the grasslands can be influenced to varying degrees. Humans living in the area have been shaping the ecosystem ever since its existence. Due to the high demand for cooking and heating fuel among the residents of the area, much of the land is degraded. For example trees of the polylepis genus used to be easily found throughout the ecosystem and now are scarce (Wilcox, 1984).

The most widespread influence on the grasslands is extensive grazing combined with the effects of fire. Because grazing dries out the land, it is more susceptible to fire. Once a land has been exposed to fire, it makes it more likely to burn again, creating a feedback loop that leads to damage of the ecosystem (Bruna, 2011). Despite the fact that the puna grasslands experience heavy grazing, as an ecosystem it is highly resilient. In these areas of high grazing, successional species of grass and forbs grow back thick, thereby preserving the soil which means its potential to rebound is higher (Wilcox, 1984). The grasslands are also influenced more locally by agriculture, mining, and waste disposal depending on the concentration of the population.

There are two predominant forms of management of the puna grazing lands. The first is communal. In this form of management, the community controls the land and every member of that community grazes livestock. This generally leads to overgrazing and degradation of the land. The second style of management is cooperative. This type of management originated from a movement that took land from large landholders and turned it over to council composed of workers. Agronomists and animal scientists see over the land and make sure the grazing is sustainable (Wilcox, 1984). Though there are a significant amount of problems in puna grasslands, mostly being attributed to overgrazing, there are measures being taken to improve the current situation. Range management programs are being introduced in many of the neighboring universities to research new ideas that implement little technology and can help restore the ecosystem. With the right management, the puna grasslands can rebound and support the growing populations of the surrounding areas (Wilcox, 1984). — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dvrivera (talkcontribs) 22:10, 25 November 2011 (UTC)

Comment on the WikiProject X proposal

Hello there! As you may already know, most WikiProjects here on Wikipedia struggle to stay active after they've been founded. I believe there is a lot of potential for WikiProjects to facilitate collaboration across subject areas, so I have submitted a grant proposal with the Wikimedia Foundation for the "WikiProject X" project. WikiProject X will study what makes WikiProjects succeed in retaining editors and then design a prototype WikiProject system that will recruit contributors to WikiProjects and help them run effectively. Please review the proposal here and leave feedback. If you have any questions, you can ask on the proposal page or leave a message on my talk page. Thank you for your time! (Also, sorry about the posting mistake earlier. If someone already moved my message to the talk page, feel free to remove this posting.) Harej (talk) 22:47, 1 October 2014 (UTC)

WikiProject X is live!

Hello everyone!

You may have received a message from me earlier asking you to comment on my WikiProject X proposal. The good news is that WikiProject X is now live! In our first phase, we are focusing on research. At this time, we are looking for people to share their experiences with WikiProjects: good, bad, or neutral. We are also looking for WikiProjects that may be interested in trying out new tools and layouts that will make participating easier and projects easier to maintain. If you or your WikiProject are interested, check us out! Note that this is an opt-in program; no WikiProject will be required to change anything against its wishes. Please let me know if you have any questions. Thank you!

Note: To receive additional notifications about WikiProject X on this talk page, please add this page to Wikipedia:WikiProject X/Newsletter. Otherwise, this will be the last notification sent about WikiProject X.

Article about Iquitos to be expanded

The article about Iquitos on Wikipedia in English could be expanded with data of Iquitos in Wikipedia in Spanish. The article in Spanish has been expanded with a lot of information and could be translated to be put in the article in English. I was adding information for some time, but I realized that it would need help to nourish the article about the city. I placed a maintenance template above the lead stating that the article requires translation from Spanish. --Percy Meza (talk) 02:23, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Unreferenced living people articles bot

User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects provides a list, updated daily, of unreferenced living people articles (BLPs) related to your project. There has been a lot of discussion recently about deleting these unreferenced articles, so it is important that these articles are referenced.

The unreferenced articles related to your project can be found at >>>Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru/Archive 4/Unreferenced BLPs<<<

If you do not want this wikiproject to participate, please add your project name to this list.

Thank you.

Update: Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru/Archive 4/Unreferenced BLPs has been created. This list, which is updated by User:DASHBot/Wikiprojects daily, will allow your wikiproject to quickly identify unreferenced living person articles.
There maybe no or few articles on this new Unreferenced BLPs page. To increase the overall number of articles in your project with another bot, you can sign up for User:Xenobot_Mk_V#Instructions.
If you have any questions or concerns, visit User talk:DASHBot/Wikiprojects. Okip 00:08, 28 March 2010 (UTC)

The WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons (UBLPs) aims to reduce the number of unreferenced biographical articles to under 30,000 by June 1, primarily by enabling WikiProjects to easily identify UBLP articles in their project's scope. There were over 52,000 unreferenced BLPs in January 2010 and this has been reduced to 32,665 as of May 16. A bot is now running daily to compile a list of all articles that are in both Category:All unreferenced BLPs and have been tagged by a WikiProject. Note that the bot does NOT place unreferenced tags or assign articles to projects - this has been done by others previously - it just compiles a list.

Your Project's list can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru/Unreferenced BLPs. As of May 17 you have approximately 81 articles to be referenced. The list of all other WikiProject UBLPs can be found at Wikipedia:WikiProject Unreferenced Biographies of Living Persons/WikiProjects.

Your assistance in reviewing and referencing these articles is greatly appreciated. If you have any questions, please don't hestitate to ask either at WT:URBLP or at my talk page. Thanks, The-Pope (talk) 17:47, 17 May 2010 (UTC)

Addition of Malnutrition in Peru to WikiProject Peru

I am creating a “Malnutrition in Peru” page, and I believe it falls within the scope of WikiProject Peru and its guidelines. Malnutrition is an important health concern in Peru, especially rural populations. I plan on examining the causes, effects, and management of malnutrition within the context of Peru. There seems to be a lack of focus on health related issues, with only seven pages that fall under the “Health in Peru” category. I hope to contribute to this category with the addition of a “Malnutrition in Peru” page. If anyone has any feedback or would like to contribute, I would appreciate the help. Thanks! Help with a show article?

Hi! Can someone help with the article My three Maries? It's currently up for AfD and it looks like it should be notable, from what I'm finding. Latin American 10,000 Challenge invite

Hi. The Wikipedia:WikiProject Latin America/The 10,000 Challenge ‎ has recently started, based on the UK/Ireland Wikipedia:The 10,000 Challenge and Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The 10,000 Challenge. The idea is not to record every minor edit, but to create a momentum to motivate editors to produce good content improvements and creations and inspire people to work on more countries than they might otherwise work on. There's also the possibility of establishing smaller country or regional challenges for places like Brazil, Mexico, Peru and Argentina etc, much like Wikipedia:The 1000 Challenge (Nordic). For this to really work we need diversity and exciting content and editors from a broad range of countries regularly contributing. At some stage we hope to run some contests to benefit Latin American content, a destubathon perhaps, aimed at reducing the stub count would be a good place to start, based on the current Wikipedia:WikiProject Africa/The Africa Destubathon which has produced near 350 articles in just six days. If you would like to see this happening for Latin America, and see potential in this attracting more interest and editors for the country/countries you work on please sign up and being contributing to the challenge! This is a way we can target every country of Latin America, and steadily vastly improve the encyclopedia. We need numbers to make this work so consider signing up as a participant! Thankyou.♦ Dr. Blofeld 13:22, 21 October 2016 (UTC)

Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain

Hola, I would like to write a new article about this super beautiful Rainbow Mountain (wow!!!) in Peru. From googlemaps I get this GPS coordinates: -13.869534, -71.30296. Then I found that this place is just on the north side of Hatun Rit'iyuq mountain, and I guess that probably the "Rainbow Mountain" (in spanish: "Montana Arcoiris" or "Cerro Colorado") is just a touristic name for it. So maybe it's better to improve the Hatun Rit'iyuq than create a new Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain (it could be a redirect). What do you think? (Please ping me) --Holapaco77 (talk) 08:52, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

@Holapaco77:It appears that Vinicunca or possibly Willkacunca is the Quechua name for the place, which is distinct from the peak of Hatun Rit'iyuq. Whether you want to start a new article or not is up to you. However, it makes no sense to mix the original Quechua name with the newly invented English name, even as a redirect. Finding reliable sources on the Internet for this place seems challenging. Cobblet (talk) 16:20, 17 December 2016 (UTC)

I did find elcomercio.pe/politica/actualidad/victor-marroquin-congreso-unicameral-parche-noticia-1959203, but that's nothing more than an interview and not sufficient to show WP:GNG or WP:PROF. In place of static copied and pasted excerpts will be self-updating excerpts displayed through selective transclusion, using the template {{Transclude lead excerpt}}.

The discussion about this can be found here.

Maintainers of specific portals are encouraged to sign up as project members here, noting the portals they maintain, so that those portals are skipped by the maintenance pass. Currently, we are interested in upgrading neglected and abandoned portals. There will be opportunity for maintained portals to opt-in later, or the portal maintainers can handle upgrading (the portals they maintain) personally at any time.

Background

On April 8th, 2018, an RfC ("Request for comment") proposal was made to eliminate all portals and the portal namespace. On April 17th, the Portals WikiProject was rebooted to handle the revitalization of the portal system. On May 12th, the RfC was closed with the result to keep portals, by a margin of about 2 to 1 in favor of keeping portals.

There's an article in the current edition of the Signpost interviewing project members about the RfC and the Portals WikiProject.

Since the reboot, the Portals WikiProject has been busy building tools and components to upgrade portals.

So far, 84 editors have joined.

If you would like to keep abreast of what is happening with portals, see the newsletter archive.

If you have any questions about what is happening with portals or the Portals WikiProject, please post them on the WikiProject's talk page.

Thank you.    — The Transhumanist   07:51, 30 May 2018 (UTC)

RfC on election/referendum naming format

An RfC on moving the year from the end to the start of article titles (e.g. South African general election, 2019 to 2019 South African general election) has been reopened for further comment, including on whether a bot could be used move the articles if it closed in favour of the change: Wikipedia talk:Naming conventions (government and legislation)#Proposed change to election/referendum naming format. WP 1.0 Bot Beta

Hello! Your WikiProject has been selected to participate in the WP 1.0 Bot rewrite beta. This means that, starting in the next few days or weeks, your assessment tables will be updated using code in the new bot, codenamed Lucky. You can read more about this change on the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team page. Thanks! audiodude (talk) 06:49, 27 February 2019 (UTC)

A new newsletter directory is out!

A new Newsletter directory has been created to replace the old, out-of-date one. If your WikiProject and its taskforces have newsletters (even inactive ones), or if you know of a missing newsletter (including from sister projects like WikiSpecies), please include it in the directory! The template can be a bit tricky, so if you need help, just post the newsletter on the template's talk page and someone will add it for you.

Peer review from Coropuna

Greetings,

I am planning to bring Coropuna - one of the highest volcanoes in South America with a huge importance in Inka mythology - to WP:FAC and I've started a peer review to get some comments before there. A particularly problematic bit is the section about mythology, but comments are welcome on every part of the article. Jo-Jo Eumerus (talk, contributions) 20:18, 5 September 2019 (UTC)

Request for information on WP1.0 web tool

Hello and greetings from the maintainers of the WP 1.0 Bot! As you may or may not know, we are currently involved in an overhaul of the bot, in order to make it more modern and maintainable. As part of this process, we will be rewriting the web tool that is part of the project. You might have noticed this tool if you click through the links on the project assessment summary tables.

We'd like to collect information on how the current tool is used by....you! How do you yourself and the other maintainers of your project use the web tool? Which of its features do you need? How frequently do you use these features? And what features is the tool missing that would be useful to you? We have collected all of these questions at this Google form where you can leave your response. Walkerma (talk) 04:24, 27 October 2019 (UTC)

Sarcofagi of Carajía Ready For Status Change ?

I've made some additions to Sarcofagi of Carajía and am unsure if it's ready for a "status uplift" (I'm not even sure about the criteria). Also, there is another article Carajía that seems to cover the same topic and is now a "lesser article" (I confess I've copied some bite across to Sarcofagi of Carajía) - so they might want to be merged and mabe Carajía turned into a redirect to Sarcofagi of Carajía? Vice Presidents

Many Peruvian vice presidents do not have a Wikipedia page, even if they are notable according to Wikipedia guidelines. Update to peer review page

Hi all, I've boldly updated your project's peer review page (Wikipedia:WikiProject Peru/Peer review) by updating the instructions and archiving old reviews.

The new instructions use Wikipedia's general peer review process (WP:PR) to list peer reviews. Your project's reviews are still able to be listed on your local page too.

The benefits of this change is that review requests will get seen by a wider audience and are likely to be attended to in a more timely way (many WikiProject peer reviews remain unanswered after years). The Wikipedia peer review process is also more maintained than most WikiProjects, and this may help save time for your active members.

I've done this boldly as it seems your peer review page is pretty inactive and I am working through around 90 such similar peer review pages. Please feel free to discuss below - please ping me ({{u|Tom (LT)}}) in your response.

Cheers and hope you are well, Tom (LT) (talk) 00:04, 11 November 2020 (UTC)

Commons categories Lambayeque culture and Sicán identical?

While trying to sort some files on Commons into appropriate categories, I stumbled across the category pair Lambayeque culture and Sicán. Do they both describe the same pre-columbian culture / the same concept? According to the Wikipedia Article on Sicán, both names are used synonymously. If yes, I think it would be useful to merge them (keeping one of both as redirect). Guessing by the references on Sican culture (Q175801), "Sicán" seems to be preferable. Is this correct? Thanks for any hints and feedback! Fl.schmitt (talk) 09:45, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

@Fl.schmitt: "Lambayeque culture" and "Sicán culture" are interchangeable, per page 7 of Lambayeque: nuevos horizontes de la arqueología peruana:

As alluded to above, Izumi Shimada led the Sicán Archaeological Project and introduced the term "Sicán culture". However, the first sentence in the Preface of his book Cultura Sicán says la cultura Sicán, también más conocida como Cultura Lambayeque ("the Sicán culture, also better known as Lambayeque Culture"). Shimada also referred to the site of es:Batán Grande as "Sicán". Avoiding confusion between the Batán Grande site and the culture it belonged to may be why nowadays "Lambayeque culture" seems to be slightly preferred. For example, the Museo Larco uses Lambayeque, and the Met usually uses "Lambayeque (Sicán)" and occasionally just "Lambayeque".
My suggestion would be to make Sicán a disambiguation page linking to Lambayeque culture and Batán Grande. Cobblet (talk) 13:55, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
@Cobblet: Thanks a lot, this is very helpful for me - I will adapt the commons categories as proposed. Fl.schmitt (talk) 18:50, 8 October 2021 (UTC)
You're welcome! I'll further note that Sicán should not be confused with the nearby Moche site of Sipán, also known as Huaca Rajada, which is where the remains of the Lord of Sipán were discovered. Cobblet (talk) 19:32, 8 October 2021 (UTC)

Inca Chucu culture??

Eyes and cleanup needed

Hey folks. I came across some bizarre IP vandalism the other day on some Peru-related articles, and I wanted to alert you to it as it seems to be broader than just some random messing about.

If you look at this IP's edits you can see the type of edits being made - the particular phrase "Alex alexander huerta avendaño" appears in most cases. It popped up on several articles that I caught doing recent changes patrolling, mostly in Peru-related articles. The problem lies in the fact that this appears to have been going on for, literally, years and has not been caught on smaller articles.

I did a Google search for that phrase, and found it all over the web, including lots of Wiki mirror pages that include it. I fixed this as one example, which had been there since last year. There are a fair number of law enforcement-related pages that seem to have been affected as well as regional articles, and it's possible these edits have slipped past. The editor appears to be on IPs starting with 181.176 for the most part.

I'm also going to leave a note on the Admin Noticeboard to see if anyone has any ideas beyond keeping an eye open for these kinds of edits, but wanted to provide a heads-up for those most familiar with the topic. Cheers! Tony Fox (arf!) 16:10, 2 April 2022 (UTC)

User script to detect unreliable sources

I have (with the help of others) made a small user script to detect and highlight various links to unreliable sources and predatory journals. Some of you may already be familiar with it, given it is currently the 39th most imported script on Wikipedia. The idea is that it takes something like

  • John Smith "Article of things" Deprecated.com. Accessed 2020-02-14. (John Smith "[https://www.deprecated.com/article Article of things]" ''Deprecated.com''. Accessed 2020-02-14.)

and turns it into something like

It will work on a variety of links, including those from {{cite web}}, {{cite journal}} and {{doi}}.

The script is mostly based on WP:RSPSOURCES, WP:NPPSG and WP:CITEWATCH and a good dose of common sense. I'm always expanding coverage and tweaking the script's logic, so general feedback and suggestions to expand coverage to other unreliable sources are always welcomed.

Do note that this is not a script to be mindlessly used, and several caveats apply. Details and instructions are available at User:Headbomb/unreliable. Questions, comments and requests can be made at User talk:Headbomb/unreliable.

Department vs. Region

Back in 2019, it appears a user moved all of the "region" articles to "department" articles, e.g. Amazonas Region was moved to Department of Amazonas, Peru. I am not familiar with Peruvian subdivisions nor how up-to-date the material in Regions of Peru or Administrative divisions of Peru is, and have no opinion as to which should be preferred, although Talk page comments uggest "Region" has been the preferred designation since 2002 and that these moves were therefore. I leave it to this WikiProject to figure out.

The issue that brought me here is that none of the categories were corrected. Category:Departments of Peru is nearly empty, whereas Category:Regions of Peru is well-populated, but within each subcategory of the latter, the articles are named "department" and the catmain links are all made to the old "Region" name. In general, the name of a category should match the name of its main article—this is even a criterion for speedy renaming (WP:C2D)—so if the "Department" name is to be retained, then Category:Huánuco Region should be renamed Category:Department of Huánuco, Category:Buildings and structures in Huánuco Region should be renamed Category:Buildings and structures in the Department of Huánuco, and so on and so forth. -- choster (talk) 19:23, 6 June 2022 (UTC)

RfC: Politician infoboxes and "First/Second Vice President"

Hi everyone!

I was in the process of adding First/Second Vice President info to the infoboxes, something long overdue. Right now, the "Vice President" parameter is being used, which doesn't take into account "First Vice President" and "Second Vice President". I noticed two solutions while editing Manuel Merino.

A is to make two custom infobox parameters for "First Vice President" and "Second Vice President", and B is to stylize both First and Second Vice Presidents under the existing "Vice President" parameter.

Which one do you all think is the better one?

Old images from Peru and Patagonia

If old images from Peru and Patagonia is of interest there is a new bunch available on Commons as a result of an upload from Swedish National Museum of Science and Technology. The complete Fred Goldberg collection of over 3.000 images has more focus on polar expeditions, but this Swedish expedition had Peru and Patagonia as goal. Titles in Swedish, descriptions in Swedish and English, and everything labeled as depicting Peru... All contributions in form of adding images to articles and improving data is welcome. If you find errors, or want to discuss the upload, the Commons talk page is open.

Review of Simón Bolívar at GAN underway, expect FAC soon

Countrymen~! I have news. After a year of labor, Simón Bolívar is finally undergoing a review at GAN on its road to FAC. At either process (or preferably both) I would appreciate eyes, ears, and commentary. I am aiming to at least be in the process of FAC by 24 July 2023, if not to have TFA by then. 17 December 2023 is my fallback goal, and more likely. I look forward to whatever assistance or guidance anybody watching this page can offer or spare. –♠Vamí_IV†♠ 22:53, 28 March 2023 (UTC)

Project-independent quality assessments

Quality assessments by Wikipedia editors rate articles in terms of completeness, organization, prose quality, sourcing, etc. Most wikiprojects follow the general guidelines at Wikipedia:Content assessment, but some have specialized assessment guidelines. A recent Village pump proposal was approved and has been implemented to add a |class= parameter to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, which can display a general quality assessment for an article, and to let project banner templates "inherit" this assessment.

No action is required if your wikiproject follows the standard assessment approach. Over time, quality assessments will be migrated up to {{WikiProject banner shell}}, and your project banner will automatically "inherit" any changes to the general assessments for the purpose of assigning categories.

However, if your project has decided to "opt out" and follow a non-standard quality assessment approach, all you have to do is modify your wikiproject banner template to pass {{WPBannerMeta}} a new |QUALITY_CRITERIA=custom parameter. If this is done, changes to the general quality assessment will be ignored, and your project-level assessment will be displayed and used to create categories, as at present.
