gaming the system and disruptive editing
Hello, I hope every thing is fine with you, you've help me in the past and since I'm still very unskilled in wp technique I need your advice again. Sorry it will be a long and boring question.
It's about User:Supreme Deliciousness which edits in the Israel/Palestine articles. I read the rules and I think he is gaming the system using disruptive edits to further a very specific agenda.
Some days ago I chanced upon his/her deletion of the word Golan in the Geography section of the Israel article. I don't remember the exact details and chronology (see incorrect statement in the Talk Page), still I tried to explain nicely that it was just a physical description not a political declaration, some others concurred, and some also countered -it was very lengthy-. Then with no more argument SD deleted again the word Golan, an editor (User:Sipio) put it back with the comment: vandalism. SD asked what he meant (I don't know personnaly any of these people and have no idea if they are men or women so I'll sure be inaccurate on that point) that editor -wisely IMO since I now believe that SD is argumenting with bad faith- didn't answer but I -still very naively- tried to show SD that it was not acceptable to act in such a sureptitious way.
Then I got suspicious and looked up his/her contributions, noticed the Tourism in Israel article and read there the same lengthy discussion with the same partners on his side -I still don't know if they are aware of his ways and just agree with his edits.
Yesterday I spent many hours reading SD contributions' list over (I discovered many very interesting articles I want to read, it's obvious SD knows very well his subject, better thant I). He is -roughly- 80% in Israel/Palestine in order to delete any mention of Israel where ever it's possible -be it geography, history, food, etc.-, and adds every where "occupied" (e.g. well ..... I've not found the examples I wanted to copy for you since they have been erased from my My watchlist log and even from the history of the articles (Second Battle of Hermon and Third Battle of Hermon) -occupy was added instead of capture-, despite that one is a dynamic action verb and the other a static position- this is probably within the scope of his powers as
(User rights log); 17:36 . . Courcelles (talk | contribs) changed rights for User:Supreme Deliciousness from (none) to Reviewers (User can be trusted with Reviewer)
So 80% against Israel for occupation and 20% with litigation cases against some of his opposing views editors (not withstanding a few games interests).
Overall I had the feeling that nothing can be done when s.o. so dedicated -many hours daily- and so knowledeable is at work and I almost thought of telling those trying to compromise to meet his stated opinion (as per the on going discussion at Tourism in Israel) that it's useless for he only wants plain surrender.
I am really very distressed and lost, he is obviously stronger than I and deemed trustworthy to boot, I cannot even spend as much time fighting him, and I forgot to mention that because of the many hot arguments in the Israel/Palestine area now we are allowed 1 rv only and that plays just fine into SD's plans. I am sure that if I try to tell all the editors in every one of the hundreds articles he edited I'll simply be blocked, so what can I -or some one else- do?
I don't see that as a pro Palestinian vs pro Israeli battle, may be I am still very naive but I don't see how this petty editing can do any good to the Palestinians' cause or effectively affect the Israelis which are pitted with their back to the wall and will do whatever they believe necessary to survive, and I think that whoever wants to help the Palestinians should come here and take concrete actions along them, and I came to Wikipedia for that idealistic aim to allow free access to knowledge not to turn it into a battlefield, I will add for the record that I was in favour of a palestinian state up to September 2000 when I understood that I wanted it more than their leaders do and being already ripe in age I won't see that day come and I stopped thinking of it -still I know many Palestinians and indeed the subject comes up, they do feel like me and we are sad but helpless-. thanks, Hope&Act3! Orphan Notice on John Steinbruck article
I authored an article several months ago on John Steinbruck and saw that there was an Orphan notice, in that there were no internal links. There are now three internal links (to Lutheran Volunteer Corps, Luther Place Memorial Church, and Social Gospel). I initially got the impression from WP:Lists of common misspellings/0–9, I have just read the Manual of style and that only makes the claim about WP not using ordinal suffixes on dates, so I am unclear. CSD discussions?
I saw the CSD on User:ShawneM/Soul Style and I didn't believe it was appropriate. I left a message at Orangemike's talk page, but I realized I don't know where to go to have a specific discussion about a particular CSD. As an editor whose most recent CSD tag was abysmally wrong, I need to learn the ropes, and I'm not sure where. I assume Wikipedia talk:Criteria for speedy deletion is the place to propose changes in criteria, but that doesn't seem like the right forum to discuss the process in general or discuss specific examples. - OK, this is now weird. I see the user is now blocked (reason doesn't mean anything to me), and the article was deleted based upon G11, despite being tagged G1. I don't trust the behind-the-scenes Wikipedia
Weeks, months and years goes past of me uploading all sorts of images to Wikipedia without problem. Then.... three problems in less than 24 hours... I smell a Wikipedia conspiracy.(Or else a seriously upset person who is annoyed that I got one of their copyrighted images deleted last night...) hello, As this was my first edit and i didn't have any prior experience of editing Wiki articles. Please correct any mistakes that i had made. Hi Ukexpat. The recent edits that you made here are out of order. I have no objection to the Wikilinking, but your change of the citation style was directly contrary to the guidance at Wikipedia:Citing sources. That states:
- Citation templates are used to format citations in a consistent way. The use of citation templates is neither encouraged nor discouraged. Templates may be used or removed at the discretion of individual editors, subject to agreement with other editors on the article. Because templates can be contentious, editors should not change an article with a distinctive citation format to another without gaining consensus. Where no agreement can be reached, defer to the style used by the first major contributor.
Incidentally, the date format should accord with the style used by the first major contributor as set out in Wikipedia:Manual of Style (dates and numbers), where it states:
- Edit warring over optional styles (such as 14 February and February 14) is unacceptable. If an article has been stable in a given style, it should not be converted without a style-independent reason. Where in doubt, defer to the style used by the first major contributor. (my emphasis)
It continues:
- In June 2005, the Arbitration Committee decided that, when either of two styles is acceptable, it is inappropriate for an editor to change an article from one to the other without substantial reason; for example, with respect to British date formats as opposed to American it would be acceptable to change from American format to British if the article concerned a British subject. In February 2006, the Committee ruled, "Wikipedia does not mandate styles in many different areas; these include (but are not limited to) American vs. British spelling, date formats, and citation style. Where Wikipedia does not mandate a specific style, editors should not attempt to convert Wikipedia to their own preferred style, nor should they edit articles for the sole purpose of converting them to their preferred style, or removing examples of, or references to, styles which they dislike." They also ruled that, "Users who focus in a disruptive way on an issue or subject may be banned from editing with respect to that issue or subject."
Why not just leave the poor guy alone? He's new to Wikipedia, finding his way, and asking for advice when he's unsure about things. He contacted me for help when you slapped the bare links notice on the page, and I explained to him that there were various citation styles, and referred him to Wikipedia:Citing sources. I also mentioned the templates, and pointed out he didn't need to use them if he didn't want. Wikipedia can be a daunting place for new editors, and they can do perfectly well without what often appears as bullying by more experienced editors. I'm sure that isn't the way you think of your actions, and it most probably was not your intent. But just think on, and tread a bit more softly, particularly when you are going against guidance. internal linking
I am having a small problem with internal linking. Do I just type in the word of what I am linking when it's an internal link? Also if it's external do I just resource it or should I link it as well? You helped me out awhile back and if you can look at my recently edited page (USS Sailfish) and let me know if it's correct that would be awesome.

- I'll jump in here, as I think ukexpat is away at the moment - internal links go to other Wikipedia articles and you make them by enclosing a word in double brackets. Thus, [[Google]] produces Google. External links go to other websites and you make them by enclosing the link in single brackets. Thus, [http://www.google.com] makes [1]. I hope this helps. GOCE Backlog Elimination Drive Wrap-up
| Greetings from the Guild of Copy Editors July 2010 Backlog Elimination Drive. Thanks to all who participated in the drive! Over 100 editors—including Jimbo Wales—signed up this time (nearly triple the participants of the May drive). This benefited the Guild as well as the articles in need of copy editing. You can see from the comparison graphs that we increased the number of completed copyedits substantially. Unfortunately, we were not able to meet our goal of completely wiping out 2008 from the queue. We also were not able to reduce the backlog to less than 6,000 articles. We suspect people were busy with real life summertime things, at least in the northern hemisphere! We were able to remove the months of January, February, March, April, and May from the backlog, and we almost wiped out the month of June. We reduced the backlog by 1,289 articles (17%), so all in all it was a very successful drive, and we will be holding another event soon. We'll come up with some new ideas to try to keep things fresh and interesting. Keep up the good work, everybody!

The WP:FEED backlog
Hello, I see you made a request at WP:FEED a long time ago, but have continued to be active on Wikipedia and made good edits to the encyclopedia. Since you have posted on WP:FEED in the past, I would like to suggest that if you want please try and help out at the page, as we have a massive backlog. It'd be really great if you provided some advice to other, new users on their articles.
To do this, you'll just need to take a look at their article, which they'll post the link to, and maybe see what perhaps can be improved, like adding sections, references or links, much like you would do with any other article, except you are giving feedback rather than making actual edits. After getting some idea of what needs to be improved, you just need to tell them briefly underneath. It's really simple but incredibly useful to new users and their articles, and helps to overall increase the quality of these new articles.

Wikipedia Does Not Display Properly
Last week I made a quick edit (thinking I was logged in) and revealed my IP address. Since that time wikipedia no longer displays properly on my computer. That is, the "Tool Bar" (which displays links to User Page/Discussion/View Histtory/ Log In, etc.)does not show. I have had to use another computer to log in. Edit on Joseph Merrick / section headings
Hi, regarding this edit, do you know of any guidelines saying that you shouldn't use "biography" as a heading? The reason I'm asking, is because I know you're not the only editor who feels this way, but I've never seen it written down. The reason I use the section heading "biography" is to separate his life story from later analysis & interpretations, as well as from the references and external links sections which, it could be argued, are not actually part of the biography. To me, either way is logically acceptable. However, I've noticed other editors than you making that kind of change, so I wondered if I'm missing some guideline somewhere.--BelovedFreak 18:16, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
- I don't think it's written down anywhere, but to my mind it's illogical to have a Biography section when the whole article is a biography. Now, I can see an argument for "sub-heading" some sections under main sections in a long article, but I don't think "Biography" should be one of them. – ukexpat (talk) 18:28, 17 August 2010 (UTC)

Hi, Ukexpat I do work for the NJTPA. We noticed other Metropolitan Planning Organizations have posted articles (Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission and New York Metropolitan Transportation Council). Our intent is to provide information, not promote the agency. The NJTPA is a federally mandated agency that is completely non-commercial, non-political, and not associated with any causes. It's role is defined in the 1991 Congressional Legislation known as the Intermodal Surface Transportation Act (ISTEA). Our function is to allocate and authorize federal funding designated for transportation related projects in the Northern New Jersey region. My most recent edit was to add an external link to further establish notability.

Back after some research
Referencing User talk:AlanEarl/AlanEarl/IBOAI and your recommendations, I looked at other association pages to see if I could emulate how they handle citations and links. I did a search on "list of associations" and looked at the professional associations. While a few had editor notations requesting independent third-party citations, many had either no notations or no third-party citations. Most that did had at most one or two third-party citations but mostly links from their own websites and a few Wikipedia links. Many were last modified in early 2010 or even 2009. I want to do this right, but I also want to be on a level playing field.
A big difference between what I have entered and what I am finding in most other association entries is that most others are sparse on details (stubs). Might part of the problem be that I am being too detailed? Perhaps with fewer details the proprietary vs independent links or citations I can provide won't seem to out of proportion. Please advise.

You left me a message about the page which I have been trying to develop Richard Erdman (artist), which suggested that using Wikipedia pages as references wasn't a good idea, as they tend to be unreliable. The irony does not escape me that I am being bombarded with directives to find good sources for this page, yet, seemingly, the pages which I am seeking to use are not at that standard. Deletion of InfoSpace (Dot-Com crash) article

I'm contacting you in regard to a an article (this one)) that got deleted by (I think) you.
Can you please explain to me the reasons for the quick removal? (I didn't even have time to put a {{hangon}} tag on it).
I was under the impression that if an event page is sourced by reliable secondary sources (in the case of this article, the Seattle Times amongst others), it is OK to write an article about it. I'm still new at this editing and I might be wrong, so any clarification that will help further my understanding on the rules of Wiki, will be appreciated :).

Wikipedia:Requests for adminship/Ukexpat is a redlink. You've been around for a good long time, won plenty of plaudits for your work at the help desk and elsewhere, and generally seem to have a clue. Obviously you don't need to be an admin, but I suspect that you've been in situations helping new users etc when the ability to see why a page was speedily deleted (or to block a spamalot advertiser!) would have been useful. So, I was wondering whether you'd be interested in turning that redlink blue and hopefully getting some extra buttons. If you're not interested, fine. If you are, and think that there's anything that might get in the way from your editing history, you can let me know on email and we can discuss it that way. I'm not sure how often you look at WP:RFA, but a read through the current and recent nominations (apart from MZMcBride, which is atypical) would give you an idea as to what questions / concerns come up. Hi, thanks for helping review some requests earlier. If you decline a request, could you section them off (if not already in a separate section) and collapse it using {{subst:ffu d}} at the top and {{subst:ffu b}} at the bottom, to save space and so the bot can archive each individual section? Russian Airplay Chart
By removing the links, you destroyed the easiest method of removing all the references to the Russian airplay chart. Any way to fire up Twinkle to either undo what you have done, or to finish the job by actually removing all the chart entries? - Thanks for fixing it. You aren't the first. When the "Arc Top 40" was removed, an editor went through with AWB and removed the phrase "Arc Top 40" wherever it appeared: in the middle of chart entries, in the middle of sentences, in the middle of headers. Hi Ukexpat, there is a discussion going on about the accuracy of this article, This article startted as Thothaal/Thathaal, you had "(moved Thothaal/Thathaal to Thothaal: more appropriate - will create a redirect for the other spelling)" 28th feburary 2008, (I have copied this from the View History of the article). This article started as about the Rajput people, but later the article was hijacked by some who removed all those and made the article into about Jatt clan, the title got changed from Thothaal to Thathaal. According to my knowledge the name of the group is Thothal/Thothaal, and this group is Rajput and not Jatts. Since you once changed the title of the article, I wonder if you have some knowledge about the topic.
