Dealing with vandalism

Thanks for fixing the Guitar article. Don't let the vandals get you down. When you do come across vandalism and fix it, please put a warning on the user's talk page – set of templates detailed at Wikipedia:Vandalism makes it simple to do. In many cases a simple notice that users' actions are being monitored by others is enough to stop a simple troublemaker. But in cases where they continue to vandalize, they can be more quickly blocked by administrators if there is already a warning or two on their talk page. This 85.165.*.* guy isn't too reliable, either, he'll make mostly good edits but sometimes become very possessive about information which he's got into his head is right but isn't (I think there were some football editors who had problems with him). Yes, it's active, but right now I'm probably the only member doing anything under the project, so I'd love to get your help. It is not vandalism just because the information is not popular. Many statements in the original article were no more than opinion (all that refered to divine intervention without qualifying it as opinion). The contributors of these pieces have not been accused of vandalism.

Looks good to me. I think it's also key to make the template resemble some of the better articles on novels already on Wikipedia, because editors are used to thinking in that way - for example, Plot summary, Analysis, Film adaptation, External links - and they'll be more likely to co-opt our template. | Klaw ¡digame! 15:56, 20 January 2006 (UTC)

See Also sections are nearly always deprecated in favor of including the links in the article. If the topic wasn't important enough to mention in the body, it probably doesn't merit a link. Many editors, myself included, will delete or rearrange See Also sections whenever we find them. Novels project

Hi, sorry for not replying for so long -- real life occasionally interferes with my activities here at Wikipedia. Generally, I agree with what other contributors have said about the topic. Lots of articles on individual novels are still missing (well, on plays as well of course), and I do what I can to add one from time to time, hoping that other people will follow suit. As I see it, at least one novel per author should have its own article (a real one, not just a stub).

Personally, I'm not so much concerned with templates or other attempts at creating uniformity among articles, but it's good to see that other people are taking care of this. I'll certainly add your templates to my user page and the individual novel articles.

What you usually get when you google the title of a not-too-famous novel is links to where you can buy it and maybe a review or two, which is never NPOV. This is where Wikipedia might be able to close a gap, if only for a rather small number of users. On the other hand, this project has reached a stage where minorities can be catered for, and I'm positive that in the long run plenty of articles will be added.

incorrect reverts

Yesterday around 10:30 UTC you apparently did a bunch of reversions relating to edits by 194.83.191.3. I just wanted to make sure you were now aware that at least some of these reverts were wrong in that they were to quite old article versions, and hence reverted many legitimate edits as well as the one you probably were targetting. I see that User:Mushroom has cleaned up most or all of this damage, so I doubt there is anything to do now. My guess is that you just went to edits by 194.83.191.3 and reverted to the previous version. The problem is that this only works if the edit to be reverted yielded the current version. Novel Project

To tell you the truth, I didn't add my name to the novel project; I won't take it off, and I'll check it out. But, it was originally linked to a user named Notalama, and then changed by Tanzburg, and then instead of deleting me, Notalama added himself again. I really don't understand why any of this happened, or why someone added me. But, meh, I'll take a look around.

Your draft of the Mauritius Command article

Your draft of The Mauritius Command article Looks fine. I can think of two missing aspects, but nothing that should preclude you replacing the redirect with your article.

Those two missing aspects? A link to the articles deovted to the real officers, like Josiah Rowley, in the real campaign, (preferred) or a discussion of the real campaign. O'Brian used literary liscence to change the date of the campaign.

The other missing aspect, where O'Brian used literary liscense was in making Jack a Commodore when he wasn't very senior. CS Forester had similarly made Hornblower a Commodore, when he was quite a junior Captain. During the time in question a Captain was spending twenty years or more on the Captain's list before his promotion to Admiral. A Commodore's appointment was a considerable plum, and only very senior Captains received them. On a remote station, when an admiral would have to draw on the Captains on station, it would be a different matter. But both Jack and HH were appointed directly by the Admiralty to a post that, traditionally, would have come to an officer more than a dozen years more senior. I tried to find some wikipedia articles devoted to real RN officers of similar seniority to HH when I talked about seniority in the article devoted to Admiral Hornblower in the West Indies. Promotion was slower in Peacetime. There is no way that HH could have been an Admiral in 1818 when he was only promoted to Captain in 1805.

I have put a reference, will try to find a better one if I can. I think this is NPOV. It would be POV if I was writing "The Lillehammer OG were the best..." but I think it is an interesting NPOV factoid that 12 years later a lot of people, historians, and winter sport specialists always cite the Lillehammer Games as the best Games ever. Ski jumping at the 1984 Winter Olympics

I'm afraid we'll just have to live with it and revert - IP addresses are pretty annoying that way. I've had experience with him before - I think it's the same bloke who made a lot of edits to European Championship football squads that have been reverted (because they have been doubtful), and people over at the Football wikiproject tried to talk to him - to no avail. I think his English is pretty poor - I just hope it's a kid who eventually will get to learn English.

Maybe it'll help if the articles get expanded with some more content - I've got a few books in the local library that should help to get results and how the events unfolded. Trouble is, there's a lot to do. Sam Vimes 16:43, 3 February 2006 (UTC)

Yep. I don't really know how to "help" him - the only thing I can see that might help is to try and speak to him in Norwegian (which I can do), but I think the Football wikiproject tried that, too, to no avail. There is no hope of communicating witht he IP vandal. I have tried for about 6 months with no results. He persists and I now just revert on sight. He must have a mental issue since i do think he is trying to contribute but he does no know how to communicate or follow consensus. Also the fact he keeps coming back for more would suggest that he is not all there. A vandal would be much more savey. You may have noticed too that he often leaves the job half done and in disarray. That is just one more of his annoying traits.

WikiPedia Project:Novels

Thanks for your kind thoughts on my writing about two novels (and later on, a third) that I found very enjoyable.

About all I can contribute right now are these suggestions for your template:

1. Add an "Allusions/references to actual history and current science" section.

2. Give more guidelines to the "Literary Significance and Criticism" section.

3. Add a permanent subsection called "Awards and nominations."

You'll notice what use I have made of such additions in my two articles, The Fifth Man (novel) and Ice (novel). The latter was originally a stub of my own creation; I used your template to expand it properly.

This list should be made into a category linked to the {.{novelinfoboxincomp}}. Than we will not, In the future have to go through and find articles that had the tag removed, but were not removed from the list.

• Example: {copyedit}, {context}, ect. (the majority of the clean up tags.

These tags have lists/categorys that once the tag is removed the article is removed as well.

PLEASE if we want this to be successful we need to make it as user friendly as possible. 1 step is better than 2 steps!

More Idea's from Eagle

We need to be sure that each novel has the genre explecitly stated in the info box. This will help with catorization and stub sorting. Trust me when you are sorting stubs the last thing you want to do is read through half the article, just to find that the novel is a horror, romance, sci fi, classic, ect novel. P.S. just look at my edit history and you will see that my last 1000 edits have been catorization and stub sorting, I know what I am talking about. What I mentioned above is one MAJOR fault of the music wikiproject. 50% of the articles in there do not inform the reader (sorter), what genre an article is in. Please for the sake of this project add this to the mandatory part of the info-box template!!

Slight Bug found in Wiki Project Novel

Thanks for putting in the category reference. A (hopefully) simple change that can be done, is to have the links go directly to the article. WikiProject Novels: more templates needed!

Kevinalewis:

Have you thought about what other templates the Novels project might need? You have one for articles on novels, and it's a very good one--easy to use, and tells the contributor what you expect. But surely that's not the only kind of article a novel might require?

I have seen articles on famous fictional characters--articles that are mere stubs, and usually have no sections beyond a description of the plot from their particular POV. Surely there's much more to a character than that! Motivation, goals, conflicts, disasters that the character suffers (or causes)--any good novelist knows that he must think these things through.

Occasionally a real person will show up as a character in a novel. (I found that out when reading Ice.) I always scrupulously link back to that real person and place a short description in the "In Fiction" section of his article, describing his role and his most memorable scene or scenes.

Other than that--an article on a totally fictional character ought to follow a standard template, just as new novel articles do.

So:

1. Would you like to see such a template created?

2. How do I go about creating and submitting an article template?

All right, I'm going by the seat of my pants here...How about near where the link is( in the info box or elsewhere), put a message, "For new ideas and suggestions on this project <go here>" That alone will increase the visablility of the discussion forum. A second Idea is to put the disscussion forums near the top of the page, not near the bottom of the project box in small letters(as it is now). still haven't chosen my next book

Hello there, just a note to say that if I do choose to read (and stick with) War & Peace, I will certainly try to bring the article closer to the Novels template.

Sticking with it is a big thing--if I'm not sufficiently interested in a book after reading 50-100 pages, I'll drop it with no hesitation. I have to be in the right mood to read a particular book...that's why I didn't want to commit myself to the Book Club project.

Book card

Not exactly. Actually, what happened was that I hadn't noticed any infoboxes on any of the pages that I have seen which dicusedd particular books. This is probably dues to the fact that I havenìt been editing in Wikpedia all that long. I hadn't come across anything similar, so I was definiteley not trying to muddle existing projects and so on. I just came up wth this one and thought it might be useful. Only this morning did I even notice the exitence of the infobox on the Book project. Wikipedia is very large and often confusingly organized, so I thought I woud just go ahead and create something I hadnìt seen. Perhaps there are some ideas whic can be incorpoarted in the other. If not, just delete it. Somebody should advertise the exitence of these things better, though. Page names case sensitive?

Yes & No - but you knew that would be the answer didn't you. Actually the Wiki system is based on Unix technology as far as I am aware - which is very case sensitive. However there are one or two exceptions that mean that the first character of articles tend to be capitalised. (why I don't know)

This means that User talk:Kevinalewis and user talk:kevinalewis are synonymous. As you can see from that example the the technical "Namespace" title and the individual article (or userpage in this case) are affected independantly. One other thing it is a stylistic convention to use lowercase thoughout page names - except where a proper name is envolved. Simply put, I don't know. There are a number of things in the Wiki world I don't understand, or infact don't agree with. And actually this is one of them. However if we are working in a community, then we should aim to work by it's rules / guidelines, and this is one of them. I really don't think it is a matter of offence, but people do get upset but the strangest of things. My own approach (which I would recommend here) is to try to tread the middle ground and get the content we are writing out to as many as possible. This will often avoid silly revert wars in the long term. Hope that all makes sense. What if I can put an ISBN number of the book

The sources of materials on the original Watchman Nee site is no more authentic than what I posted.

The research materials, currently in Chinese, is already posted. It is the English version I wanted to update.

The point relates to being about to asses the quality of this research and not just that it took place. The way you write it is though that case is closed. Please debate the issue and how this subject came to light, who else believes this opinion, what the guys authority is. Sounds great, the only problem is that the bot still has to go though testing, and debugging. Is there a way to hold off the stub people for about 2 weeks?? By than I think I can get the bot fully functional and accepted here on wikipedia. The problem will be to get the bot to recognize what category is which... perhaps you can help me think of keywords to look for. Bug

As of right now my coding has hit a small runtime bug, Untill I find it, (hopefully before I get out the hammer) the bot can't do much...The problem is in the get category function. Stubs --- that are for deletion

I have spoken with User:Alai---one of the people who have been recommending the stubs for deletion. His main problem is that we (WP:NOVEL) did not go through WP:WSS/P when comeing up with the category shemes. He also noted that it is not to late to do so. I'll join in, of course, but this has all rather dented me from heading it up. See these two images. The one using CSS hacks (hiddenStructure) spits out a lot of garbage at text browsers and some screen reading software (used by the disabled) and are unacceptable. The meta-template version doesn't suffer from these problems. The reason I fully ditched wiki-markup for the tables is because it's a bit jarring/confusing I suspect to go from wiki-markup to HTML and back. Unfortunately, to avoid deeply nested use of meta-templates, HTML markup is used inside the {{qif}} calls (wiki-markup isn't handled correctly inside of qif). Translations

Kevin,

Since you appear to be the senior person for Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels, I thought you would be the best to ask about noting translations. I have been sucked into some Kafka, The Trial and The Castle, and find that the entries are lacking a lot. Notably there are significant differences in the early translations based on Brod's interpretation of what Kafka wanted versus the "scholarly" approach used for the more recent editions (post-1980). I wanted to note this and have thought of a number of ways to show this. My idea was to add a section in the Franz Kafka entry to reference the types of translations. Then take the entry for a book, such as The Castle, and remove the "infobox" to a specific translation edition, basically leaving the plot. Then add a section for the translations and create separate articles (i.e. The Castle, Definitive Edition, Muir Translation and The Castle, Critical Edition, Harman Translation) to note the translations and any distinguishing features of those translations.

So,

1) Is there a format for this already?

2) If not, is there a group I can float this idea in front of prior to making the changes?

3) Should I just do it and suffer the outcome?

Hi Todd

If I understand you correctly, you want to make articles such as The Castle a "general" article about the novel and then add specific articles for major translations, this that right. OK, Assuming that such articles would all be a decent length and content I would support such a move. However I would tend to suggest changing the main article so that it talks mainly about the "original" french novel (with infobox that covers the original language version - and cover if possible), and then have each article focus on the first edition of each major translation with infobox and image to suit. I can tell before you start that the standard article pattern used by the project would not quite suit, but would suggest that you used it as much as you can.

What you should do now is mention these changes on the article talk page Talk:The Castle and see if others object in any way or would even like to contribute. I know little about this particular novel but would lend a hand as necessary. :: Kevinalewis : ^{(Talk Page)} 07:47, 10 March 2006 (UTC)

Thank you and I agree with your suggestion on making the page the "original" German text. But I feel that I can make entries for the two editions I have read but I am surely unqualified to make comments on the original version. I could make a good first past on the history of the manuscripts, some of the editions (Brod's) and some of the translations -- at least enough to let people understand there significance of their existence.

Being new to adding wikipedia content,

1) is it appropriate to stub out an initial article like that? (possible solution: Get German help)

2) Is there a "long lasting" sandbox where I can prototype the idea so people are clear on my intent?

In the meantime I will write up something for Talk:The Castle to explain the idea, incorporating your thoughts.

On second thought, since more than one info box can be placed in an article, maybe it would be best to make a major heading for each edition (ordered by pub date), the follow-on editions/translations would simply mention the changes to that edition. The advantage of this is that there are fewer articles to maintain, the con is that discussion on any given edition would be hard to relate to the edition. I am still waiting for feedback on the proposal, meanwhile I am watching the confusion on edits grow for this entry. You ask how it is coming... the problem is that it could go on forever. I did post in my sandbox the real rough draft of the proposed page (please let me know what you think). I posted this to make sure that my links were correct. I still have a lot to do -- a lot of incomplete references and stubbed sentences -- and am verifying some sources as we 'speak' . Family health issues (not quite death) and taxes are getting in my way. The Muir Translation and Harman Translation articles (not sandboxed) are equally complete and a Malcolm Pasley artcle is outlined. I was going to put a stub for the little known Underwood translation, until I can find it in a used bookstore.

I have had little input on my concept, so I am going to post it and see what happens. I am targetting this for early next week.

Archæology

I'm wondering if you can't see the ligature in archæology when I write it out, since you keep insisting that "archology" means something different, but I've never mentioned it. What I am debating is that Archæology (spelling where the a and the e connect together) means the same time as archaeology. The word is Old English and it came before our present day spelling, however like I've said before the OED recognises it as correct. Refer to the List of words that may be spelled with a ligature, it is constantly being double checked. Also I've found a trustworthy website that claims everything I've said up to now. Thanks for the information. My only other question would be where to list items in the worklist if they are in more than one genre. For instance, the Coldfire Trilogy books are rather equally scifi and fantasy. I'm not sure which genre to list them in or if it would inappropriate to put list them in both in case people were to not check one genre or the other. Thank you! FAE 20:24, 17 March 2006 (UTC)

Book stub sorting

Making new list of Book -> Novel

Done I just put the new list in place of the old.

Basically what the title says...Any other lists need to be made, the process is really easy, just tell me where to look and what for.:-)

• Do we need help finding particular articles that will fit in a category (nobody is wants to go through and find the 50 or 60 articles out of who knows how many.)
  • The bot will simply generate a second list that would have just those articles that fit the criteria.(Agian this is reeally easy to do)
    • i.e. Look in Category Novels for Romance novels. (then make a list of the 50 or so that fit.)Eagle (talk) (desk)

Stone Age

You recently made an edit in this article to change a word in American English to one in British English with the edit summary this is more correct. Please don't - this only starts national dialect edit wars. As for the word in question American and British English differences gives:

"Verb past tenses with -ed: Americans tend to use dreamed, leaped, learned, spelled; Commonwealth more commonly uses dreamt, leapt, learnt, spelt, particularly if the speaker uses Received Pronunciation. As with the "tre" words, the t endings are often found in older American texts. The forms with -ed are also common in Commonwealth usage, and preferred by many careful writers of English since they are regular verbs. (Note that the two-syllable form learnèd /'lɜːnɪd/, usually written simply as learned, is still used as an adjective to mean "educated", or to refer to academic institutions, in both British English and American English.)" More novel stubs?

Hello Kevin, thanks for the message, and I feel really nice meeting you. Your name reminded me of Lewis Carroll. While tagging the pages, I found that a number of pages require a variety of treatment including copyediting, “infusion” of fresh contents. Yes, I would surely like to be actively involved in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels. You are right as regards establishing standards for Novel based articles and writing articles that meet our own and others high standards. Wiki Break

I am taking a break from wikipedia... this is due to misunderstanding between me and some admins(who will remian unamamed). Adimins when I return I hope that you look at the WP:FAITH, especially in regards to my mistake on some of the criteria with User:Gnome (Bot). The bot was blocked 30 minutes after it stoped operating...(that was ok), and than agian a full 24 hours after the first block(while the bot was still blocked) for continuing to run the bot...The problem is that my bot could NOT have done any more edits as it was already blocked. But yet on the admin's notice board NONE of the admins choose to look at the situation. (or the links to pages contianing discussions supporting Gnome bot. IN ESSENCE I FEEL LIKE I HAVE BEEN TREATED LIKE A VANDAL. I have never knowingly wandalized a page in my life!!!, and as soon as I realized there was a problem with the bot I stopped it and reprogrammed it...When I return, I may try and run it agian...or I may not...depends on how much I feel like putting up with admins

Please parden me for my rant above...These feelings I have toward ADMINS are not helping the encyclopedia...Thus rather than going crazy and denouncing admins in general or going around and making WP:POINTs, I am going to take a vacation. My leaving is the only way I can see that I can aid Wikipedia. It is the only Good Faith course of action left to me.

I refuse to go down to the level of WP:ATTACK or WP:SOCK... and I hope you respect me for that.

I will return in 1-2 months and see if things go any better.

Novels Project

Hi Kevin -- thanks for the welcome on my talk page. I signed up for the Novels Project because I do love books and reading; I guess I'm just not exactly sure what to do and what "counts" as a Project job. For instance, I have been dedicating lots of time to, and have just posted, a complete book list of Nora Roberts' works. Does that count?
