Aunt Phillis's Cabin

I just wanted to say thanks for re-assessing my work on Aunt Phillis's Cabin so quickly. Somebody had made a start on it and I'd decided to clean it up as best as possible. And thanks to your re-assessment, I now know what further improvements are needed.

Thanks again,

CfD nomination of Category:Poetry by Tennessee Williams

Category:Poetry by Tennessee Williams, which you created, has been nominated for deletion, merging, or renaming. If you would like to participate in the discussion, you are invited to add your comments at the category's entry on the Categories for discussion page. Thank you. Solomon

I have no idea what you mean by "Please establish such a bald and blanket statement " -- I've used a reliable source for it. As it stands, the paragraph was unencylopedic and Young is not a RS. And of course, there is no agreement that the King list is reliable enough to be as exact as Barnes claims. The section needs improving, take it to the talk page please instead of simply reverting. Fledgling Jason Steed

Thank you for taking an interest in this article in the past. It is now being considered for deletion. If you would like to comment on the article, the discussion is here: [1].--Beehold (talk) 23:31, 7 April 2009 (UTC)

Fledgling Jason Steed

Hi Kevinalewis,

Many thanks for your support of the article Fledgling Jason Steed when it was debated at Articles for Deletion. Sadly, despite more support than opposes, the Wikipedia admins decided it "was in the project's best interests" to delete the article. But... I am now working on a new version which, hopefully, will be acceptable to Wikipedia....and the one thousand people who viewed the page every day! Just give me a few days...!--Beehold (talk) 23:03, 13 April 2009 (UTC)

Category:1951 in Scotland

I notice that this category you created is unpopulated (empty). In other words, no Wikipedia pages belong to it. If it remains unpopulated for four days, it may be deleted without discussion, in accordance with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#C1. I'm notifying you in case you wish to (re-)populate it by adding [[Category:1951 in Scotland]] to pages that belong in it.

I tagged the category. This will not, in itself, cause the category to be deleted. It serves to document (in the page history) that the category was empty at the time of tagging and also to alert other watchers that the category is in jeopardy. You are welcome to remove the tag if you wish. However, removing the tag will not prevent deletion of the category if it remains empty.

If you created the category in error, or it is no longer needed, you can speed up the deletion process by tagging it with {{db-author}}.

I am a human being, not a bot, so you can contact me if you have questions about this. Best regards, --Stepheng3 (talk) 17:55, 15 April 2009 (UTC)

The Saxon Shore

Thanks for the reorganization, I am not fully steeped in the stylistic standards for the project. One question however: For in text citations, why would you do that for plot summary? It seems that because this is simply a following of the text, the book itself is the natural reference, therefore without need of exterior reference. This would seem to hold true for both character descriptions and the political entities as well. What type of in text citations are you looking for? SADADS (talk) 14:12, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

Point taken - the citations mainly relate to the real world elements - which element "could" do with improving. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:34, 17 April 2009 (UTC)

His Dark Materials task force

I am thinking of starting off a His Dark Materials task force and have already found one or two interested in the project. Please tell me whether or not you support this. (and quickly since I'll be logging off within an hour. Pmlinediter  Talk 09:52, 20 April 2009 (UTC)

Like with any such task force it depends on interest. If you believe the interest is there - of course I will support it. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:09, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
Thanks, I am starting it and have made a list of users interested in the task force and will post an invite in their talk pages. Also, another question I have is whether I should contact users who have made edits to the his Dark Materials articles, but have been inactive for about 1-2 years or 5-6 months? Thanks. Pmlinediter  Talk 10:19, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I don't see any harm in it. Just go for it - if they are inactive they won't even see the post, but it might get you a few extra! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:21, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
I will create the task force any minute now, and will give you the link. Pmlinediter  Talk 10:24, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
The task force is here. Pmlinediter  Talk 10:30, 20 April 2009 (UTC)
We are in urgent need of an HDM parameter in the NovelsWikiProject template. On another note, I have invited some to join the TF but notice that they have not signed in for the last few days. But hopefully, by next month, we'll have at least 10-12 participants (I have found over 100 intersted in the books). After all, PJTF too started out with three member, but now there are 12 (thanks to the PJTF parameter in the template). Please tell me when the HDM parameter has been added, so that I can start my work in the talk pages (and articles) and also find an estimate of the number of articles we are dealing with. Pmlinediter  Talk 09:15, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
It takes a little bit of setting up with all the categories and all. I will get to it as soon as I can and then the parameter support needs adding by an admin to the protected banner template. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 11:09, 22 April 2009 (UTC)
Forgive me butting in, I found I am still watching your talk! I have put some code on the sandbox version for this. Feel free to have a look and tweak as necessary :) — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 12:59, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

(undent)The HMD stuff (nice and proactive) does look ok if you are confident in if - put it in. I have just finished putting the categories in so we should be ready. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:09, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Okay, but I thought that Pmlinediter would probably be able to find a better image to represent the new task force. I just picked the first one that I found. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 14:14, 22 April 2009 (UTC)

Wikipedia:Books categories

It occurs to me that this area of the category hierarchy is still very new, so there are unlikely to be established conventions. In other areas, it's typical to see by country and by region in parent categories. I think these are parent categories, so by makes good sense. However, if you want to take these to a full CfD, I'll cooperate. --Stepheng3 (talk) 16:50, 21 April 2009 (UTC)

I don't see a problem here, but if you convince RichardF to change the name, I won't interfere. --Stepheng3 (talk) 16:09, 23 April 2009 (UTC)

Category:Wikipedia:Books on countries

While that may be a better title, that would require a CfD nomination and a full discussion. I'm going to process this batch as is. If you think that is a better form, then select one and nominate to see if there is consensus for that change. This way you are not tagging all of those categories again and finding out that there is no consensus for your proposed change. Vegaswikian (talk) 02:23, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:JohnSteinbeck EastOfEden.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:JohnSteinbeck EastOfEden.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:46, 24 April 2009 (UTC)

Fantasy help

I am a longtime (3 years) editor, who came to an article not as an editor, but as a user. I wanted to know about the "The Twelve Houses Series" by Sharon Shinn.

I decided to add information about Fortune and Fate. In doing this I triggered another editor who is determined to make sure that only notable books are in Wikipedia. He obviously feels that none of the Twelve Houses meets the criteria.

I do not know how to get them to back off and quite tagging the article for deletion.

I created an article, Fortune and Fate, put information in it, posted it, and ONE MINUTE later it was tagged for deletion. I was just pausing while a gathered more information. My plan was to finish the article make sure it looked good, move the contents to The Twelve Houses Series article, and convert the Fortune and Fate article to a redirect page. I did that.

But now User:RadioFan has tagged The Twelve Houses Series with these tags

I removed them but do not think that RadioFan will relent.

I hope you or someone in the Wikipedia:WikiProject Novels/Fantasy task force can get RadioFan to cool it. I am sorry that this happened but I really do not know what I could have done differently.

Nick Beeson (talk) 14:06, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

I have to say there are no references to that tag is indisputable. The other I have left off at present - but you make no assertions of notability for any of the novels or the series as a whole nothing to indicate that (other than being published) they are of note. Hence the tags. Correct this and the tagger will I am sure desist. Any more help let me know. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:59, 28 April 2009 (UTC)

Books on geography categories

It finally dawned on me that Category:Categories by country comes under Category:Countries and Category:Categories by region comes under Category:Regions. Based on those articles categories, I made the corresponding books categories as follows.

Category Wikipedia:Books on geography not found

Now all these categories match up between articles and books. RichardF (talk) 02:04, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

But one layer too many - I have fixed this by removing the "by" group and blending everything else. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:28, 30 April 2009 (UTC)
I disagree, but I'm not interested in going around in circles on this. Now the books categories are out of sync with the articles categories. I'll leave it up to you and Stepheng3 to settle it. RichardF (talk) 11:07, 30 April 2009 (UTC)

Bruce Marshall

I notice the work you did on his books. One correction would be that he has at least two non-fiction books. In addition to The White Rabbit, Thoughts of My Cats should also be listed as non-fiction instead of as a novel. Best, Tom —Preceding unsigned comment added by Corsair1944 (talkcontribs) 22:03, 6 May 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the correction. I was going be the designation as I found it on the article. This I have now changed and I trust is now correct. I look forward to seeing more content in the article we currently have, many have been tagged for lack of notability information and some for lack of references. It would be good if these are responded to. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:14, 7 May 2009 (UTC)

I notice that in the Novels of Bruce Marshall you have several works listed which are not novels Contribution to A Time to Laugh (1949) "The Curé of Ars," chapter in Saints for Now (1952) Introduction to Rue Notre Dame (1953) Foreword to Top Secret Mission (1955) Should these perhaps be in some other area? Corsair1944 (talk) 17:25, 13 May 2009 (UTC)

The Skystone

Thanks as always, however why is that book of mid importance whereas the other ones in the series of of low importance?

and are there any tasks that you would like to see done for WIKIProject Books?SADADS (talk) 12:20, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

My mistake - unless you know and can show differently of course. WP:Novels is my bag! plenty of taks forces to have a look through! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 13:29, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

In The Skystone and The Saxon Shore you changed the titles of the books inside the novels, however in the text that is there format for example in The Saxon Shore the title for the Section is "Book One : Cornwall" not "Cornwall." I think that would be more true to the text. SADADS (talk) 18:16, 11 May 2009 (UTC)

Probably - however it is not normally encouraged either to subdivide the plot summary or even have so much summary that the article is more plot thatn anything "real world". :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:07, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

I'm working on the real world, but the integrity of the plot summary is necessary as it is in Patrick O'brian's Post Captain or HMS Surprise, because as a historical novel, more and more historical references, and references to Arthurian legend, are contained within the plot than simply making the summary incomplete. SADADS (talk) 14:47, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Ok with that - but don't make the section heads full subheadings just highlight them as I changed them to. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:19, 12 May 2009 (UTC)

Infobox Royalty

Hello, Kevinalewis! I was told that you are pretty good with templates and I need help around one. The Template:Infobox Royalty needs to be edited, to reduce its length. Could you please put all the succession elements (predecessor, successor, reign, regent, coronation) into a hide/show box? You can see how the Spanish did it on es:Plantilla:Ficha de monarca. The infobox of Eleanor of Aquitaine article, for example, has three succession parameters. If we could make them collapsable, the infobox would be significantly shorter, but nothing would be lost. I've tried to do it, but there is always something wrong. Thanks! Surtsicna (talk) 12:13, 23 May 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Angeli (novel)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Angeli (novel), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Novel with no claim in article of meeting WP:Notability. Not listed at worldcat or amazon.

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Fabrictramp | talk to me 21:06, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

My error -- for some reason, it didn't come up at worldcat under the title, but the author did come up. I've removed the prod, but the article really needs some refs and a claim of meeting WP:Notability. Cheers!--Fabrictramp | talk to me 21:09, 24 May 2009 (UTC)

Article class

"articles by class" refers to whether an article is stub-class, Start-class, B-, A, Good, Featured, etc. DS (talk) 01:36, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

.... hm! I'm rather surprised by that, to be honest. DS (talk) 18:52, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Adoption?

I'm new to Wiki, mostly interested in small projects, especially ones having to do with literature. I've been meandering around trying to learn all of the Wiki guidelines, but I have a real life too, so it's going slower than I'd like. If you would be interested in adopting me, I will be checking this talk page and my own. Thanks! PrincessofLlyr (talk) 13:54, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Happy to - what would you like to know!? :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 08:13, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
First, wondering if you could give me a quick run-down on referencing and the common techniques for that. I read the referencing for beginners page, but it didn't work terribly well when I tried it. Also, what's the policy for something that is based on head knowledge, for instance, a synopsis of a book that you've read? Does that need to have some kind of references? Should you instead try to find a synopsis online? Thanks for your help!PrincessofLlyr (talk) 13:10, 11 June 2009 (UTC)
Technical side first, I would add
==Footnotes==
{{reflist}}
to the end of the article and add notes at the appropriate place in the article tagged with <ref> and </ref> tags. Within these I would then format the references with the {{cite book }} etc formats. Find more information on reference formatting in WP:CITET where each form in listed and documented.
On the Plot summaries I would endeavour to find sources but not to be slavish about it. Articles on fiction should only have the briefest of Plot summaries anyway the focus should be the real world issues. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 13:44, 11 June 2009 (UTC)

Category:Articles by class

I have left a description of the intent of this category at the CfD. Cheers, —Ruud 14:23, 10 June 2009 (UTC)

Re: Clannad (visual novel) hatnote proper usage

I'm not just speaking out of preference, it's a guideline. Specifically, a hatnote should not be used on Clannad (visual novel) to point to Clannad per WP:NAMB. Further, a disambig must be placed on Clannad pointing to Clannad (visual novel) per WP:HN#Two articles with similar titles which is already in use.-- 00:23, 12 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Novels - Coordinator

As of March 5, there should have been an election for the position of Coordinator, a position you share with The Ed17. The project seems to be slowly dying, so I think we need to see what we can do to revive it. In my opinion, the place to start would be to elect a Coordinator (a position I do not want to undertake, just to clarify), then revive the newsletter. If either you or Ed would be willing to show me the ropes, I would be more than willing to help write (and distribute) as much of the newsletter as required, as I have a lot of free time on my hands for a couple of months. Regards, Alan16 (talk) 19:22, 20 June 2009 (UTC)

With the help of The Ed17 I have written a new newsletter, and have updated the collaboration. This is all done with the hope of revitalising the project. We also organised an Coordinator election. It would be useful to know if you intend to stand. Regards, Alan16 (talk) 00:00, 21 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Novels - Coordinator Election

Good Evening. I imagine none of the seven of you who will be getting this identical message will really know who I am, so I'll briefly fill you in. I joined the project four months ago, and recently I took up the role of writing the newsletter with help and mentoring from The Ed17. Between us we decided - in an attempt to revitalise the Project - that a Coordinator Election could get people interested. So, the point of this. An election has been set up, and in an attempt to modernise it, it will be a bit shorter and possibly sweeter - one week to sign up, three weeks voting.

The seven of you who are receiving this message, are the seven people - not including myself - who hold positions at the Job Centre, so you are the people most likely to want the challenge that is the role of Coordinator. The deadline for nominating yourself is 23:59pm June 27.

To nominate yourself, copy the writing in the box below into the Candidates section, adding your details and statements:

=== Name ===

{{user|Name}}
: Statement goes here...

==== Comments and questions for Name ====
(this part is added when voting phase starts June 28)

Finally, I have not decided whether I am standing yet. Also, if you want to reply to this, I would be grateful if you could reply on my talk page.

Thanks, Alan16 (talk) 19:03, 22 June 2009 (UTC)

WikiProject Novels - Coordinator Election

Hello. To begin, every member of WikiProject Novels will be getting this message (the joy of macros) so if you wish to get in touch with me, please post a message on my talk page. I would encourage anyone who so wishes, to stand in the Coordinator Elections. If you wish to stand, please do so by 23:59pm, June 27. Voting will the continue to 23:59pm, July 21. Can everyone please check-out the Coordinator Elections page. Also, the collaboration of the month is The Tin Drum, so if you have any spare time, please check it out. And I apologise to the seven of you for whom this will be a repeat message. Regards, Alan16 (talk).

Hi. Thanks for the comment. I was starting to think that I would stand, and your comment has persuaded me to. Regards, Alan16 (talk) 13:57, 24 June 2009 (UTC)

Robin Hobb

Hi. Could you tell me what I did wrong in my edit of Robin Hobb? I was just trying to keep the bibliography in chronological order. Thanks, I'm still a newbie here, so any pointers would be gratefully accepted. Sabiona (talk) 13:00, 26 June 2009 (UTC)

Sorry to edit strongly - sometimes difficult to spot the difference between a good faith edit and someone messing things about purposely. To answer your question, the bibliography was thematically organised with particular context given to related series of works. Many of such lists are normally arranged chronologically which is what I guess you were trying to achieve. However if you look at the history and the effect of you edit these related series where split up and the series related formatting/indenting made no sense any more. Personally for straight forward works listings I much prefer the chronological approach as the basic form but this would need to be done without any series related information and formatting to get in the way.
Works
  • "Story1" (1988)
  • Book1 (1989)
  • Book2 (1990)
  • Book3 (1991)
  • Book4 (1992)
  • Book5 (1993)
  • "Story2" (1993)
  • Book6 (1994)

instead

we have

Series 1
  • Book1 (1989)
  • Book2 (1990)
  • Book4 (1992)
Series 2
  • Book3 (1991)
  • Book5 (1993)
