Novels Collaboration of the Month

Hi, Kevinalewis. The Wonderful Wizard of Oz has been chosen as the Novels Collaboration of the Month for January 2009. Please help to improve this article towards FA status. Cheers. Liveste (talkedits) 00:07, 3 January 2009 (UTC)

Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell

Please stop adding poorly sourced information to the article. I have been explaining on the talk page, for example, how the citation you provided for the publication date was for a book with a different ISBN number than the one in the infobox. I have now replaced it with a citation that explains the multiple release dates, which is far more specific. To write quality articles, we have to be meticulous. Thanks. sarah stein

Hello, I am a freelance writer in SF, California and am interested in Sarah Stein. Specifically, the time she spent in Palo Alto and the details surrounding the dispersal of her Matisse collection. Any suggestions?

Orphaned non-free image (File:SpocksBeard TheLight.jpg)

You've uploaded File:SpocksBeard TheLight.jpg, and indicated that it's used under Wikipedia's rules for non-free images. However, it's not presently used in any articles. Wikipedia policy requires that non-free images be either used or deleted, so if this image isn't used in an article in the next week, it will be deleted.

Image copyright problem with File:StephenBury Interface.jpg

Thanks for uploading File:StephenBury Interface.jpg. You've indicated that the image is being used under a claim of fair use, but you have not provided an adequate explanation for why it meets Wikipedia's requirements for such images. In particular, for each page the image is used on, the image must have an explanation linking to that page which explains why it needs to be used on that page. Can you please check

  • That there is a non-free use rationale on the image's description page for each article the image is used in.
  • That every article it is used on is linked to from its description page.

After the Fire

Greetings! So, Kevin, what do you know that the rest of us seem not to? Admittedly I haven't checked recently, but right after the Autumn '08 tour, there was no indication of whether Rob was a permanent feature or not... Is he now an official member of the band? Cheers—GRM (talk) 12:13, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

So, Ian is a Wikipedian. I'll have to watch out for him. Thanks for the feedback—GRM (talk) 17:31, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

Question on Japanese novels

Why are you removing Japanese novels from the scope of the Novels WikiProject? Stuff like Mōryō no Hako may have been animated and adapted into manga titles, but they're novels first. And I don't mean graphic novels either, but actual written prose. And then there's "light novels" like Full Metal Panic!. Light novels are written prose, too, and no different from young adult novels or novellas --both of which are within the scope of WP:NOVELS.--Nohansen (talk) 17:24, 13 January 2009 (UTC)

I second this question; this series for example is a series of novels as well, that served as the basis for the later anime adaptation.--Piotr Konieczny aka Prokonsul Piotrus| talk 19:20, 13 January 2009 (UTC)
Copy/modified of answer I gave to Nohansen.
I must admit I might have been a bit quick. I saw the Manga project tags and didn't look too much further, oops. If they are not Manga and not graphical but are conventional prose narrative then they should be included, sorry. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 09:15, 14 January 2009 (UTC)

The Twelve Kingdoms

Hi, I;d like to know why The Twelve Kingdoms is out of scope of the NovelsWikiProject? It's a set of Japanese fantasy novels, upon which a cartoon has been based (like Lord of the Rings, for instance), so why would it be out of scope? Is it because it's Japanese? 76.66.198.171 (talk) 21:36, 15 January 2009 (UTC)

See answer above. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 06:48, 16 January 2009 (UTC)

Fantasy Book Club

Hi Kevin,

Although i am not active on Wikipedia, i did start a Fantasy Book Club (using the nick JJ) on Goodreads that may enjoy joining. It has over 200 members now and has many fantasy authors in the group. Your most welcome to join the Fantasy Book Club.

Proposed deletion of The Guild Collection Vol. 2

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article The Guild Collection Vol. 2, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

notability is not indicated

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Boston (talk) 02:47, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

  • Hi...It looks like you're a good editor but you may need to go back to add references and indication of notability for some of the articles you made in the more distant past. I prodded only this one. Boston (talk) 02:47, 24 January 2009 (UTC)

A. C. McClurg

Hi Kevin, Can you explain what you meant by "successed Griggs in the city" in the article about the publisher A. C. McClurg? Thanks, Rojomoke (talk) 16:56, 26 January 2009 (UTC)

City of Thieves, A Novel

Hi, I think you made an error by moving the page, for the name of the book is City of Thieves, A Novel. Just saying that you should consider changing it back--CFountain (talk) 17:44, 1 February 2009 (UTC)

I disagree, as you may notice every novel and his dog get this suffix added to the cover of their books these days. Some editions of this book are being advertised without it. The best one could say is that it is a sub-title, more likely just a highly common description (maybe used for the unintelligent book buying public who can't identify a novel with their own eyes!). All rather academic now as the article was deleted for heavy copyright violations. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 09:43, 2 February 2009 (UTC)

Collaboration templates

Hi,

Regarding this revert: It's made explicit at Wikipedia:Collaboration#Creating a new collaboration point 5 that collaboration templates belong on the talk page. This can be observed pretty readily from the placement of other common COTWs, such as those listed on template:COTW,a nd indeed from most modern invocations of this template being of the {{tmbox}} class (a change I've made to the collab template in question). In general, articlespace templates are for issues relating to the article itself; issues relating to the community, such as WikiProject notices, belong on the talk page. Chris Cunningham (not at work) - talk 15:51, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Hi, Kevinalewis. I've responded to this discussion on Chris' user talk page. Let me know what you think. Cheers. Liveste (talkedits) 22:46, 4 February 2009 (UTC)

Novels Collaboration of the Month: February 2009

Yikes! Sorry about the delay, but (in case you didn't already know)...

Hi, Kevinalewis. Flowers for Algernon has been chosen as the Novels Collaboration of the Month for February 2009. Please help to improve this article towards FA status. Cheers.

Threshold (novel)

I'm curious what more you think it would take to remove the stub status? The Wikipedia novel project even rates the article as "Start" and not "Stub" (see article talk page). While I agree there is room for expansion, as there is in almost any article, I disagree that it is a stub. It has references, plot info, author info, and some critical review info. Would you be amenable to removing the stub designation and adding the edit box {{expand}}? — Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib)  –  11 May 2024, 09:13 (UTC)

Ok I admit on second look it is a bit borderline. We do need to avoid article that have only in-universe material though. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 14:26, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Cool. I'll change the article. One more thing though, I'm not sure what you mean by "in-universe" material. Could you elaborate? — Bill W. (Talk) (Contrib)  –  11 May 2024, 09:13 (UTC)
Check out In-universe - but simply anything which makes the internal aspects of the fictional work the subject. That is opposed to talking about the novel etc. from the point of view of its effect on the "real world", i.e. reviews, critical reaction, sales figures, writing background, real world elements used for inspiration. Hope that is clear. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:04, 6 February 2009 (UTC)
Also covered in more detail at Wikipedia:Manual of Style (writing about fiction). :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 15:06, 6 February 2009 (UTC)

Orphaned non-free media (File:LindseyDavis ADyingLightInCorduba.jpg)

Thanks for uploading File:LindseyDavis ADyingLightInCorduba.jpg. The media description page currently specifies that it is non-free and may only be used on Wikipedia under a claim of fair use. However, it is currently orphaned, meaning that it is not used in any articles on Wikipedia. If the media was previously in an article, please go to the article and see why it was removed. You may add it back if you think that that will be useful. However, please note that media for which a replacement could be created are not acceptable for use on Wikipedia (see our policy for non-free media).

If you have uploaded other unlicensed media, please check whether they're used in any articles or not. You can find a list of 'image' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "Image" from the dropdown box. Note that all non-free media not used in any articles will be deleted after seven days, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. Thank you. BJBot (talk) 05:04, 8 February 2009 (UTC)

Category:Fantasy novels task force articles

I notice that this category you created is unpopulated (empty). In other words, no Wikipedia pages belong to it. If it remains unpopulated for four days, it may be deleted, without discussion, in accordance with Wikipedia:Criteria for speedy deletion#C1. I'm notifying you in case you wish to (re-)populate it by adding [[Category:Fantasy novels task force articles]] to articles/categories that belong in it.

I blanked the category page. This will not, in itself, cause the category to be deleted. It serves to document (in the page history) that the category was empty at the time of blanking and also to alert other watchers that the category is in jeopardy. You are welcome to revert the blanking if you wish. However, doing so will not prevent deletion if the category remains empty.

If you created the category in error, or it is no longer needed, you can speed up the deletion process by tagging it with {{db-author}}.

--Stepheng3 (talk) 21:39, 10 February 2009 (UTC)

I did a little investigation. It turns out that the articles were moved to Category:Fantasy fiction articles, so all's well. I'll go ahead and request deletion of the old category. --Stepheng3 (talk) 19:19, 12 February 2009 (UTC)

What do you think needs to be fixed here? It looks to me like everything's working fine. Let me know if I can help in some way. --Stepheng3 (talk) 19:14, 13 February 2009 (UTC)

Novels

Well I'm well read, enthusiastic, and way too much time on my hands at the moment. (I'm just waiting for September when Uni starts.) So, just plain hard work is what I'll mainly bring. Alan16 (talk) 14:22, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Thanks for the welcome. I've already started inviting people - people who have repeatedly edited pages on novels or authors, those sort of people, as well as some friends I know who are interested in novels. Also, thanks for the link to the page of templates. I was just using the green one which says "click here to join WikiNovels Project" before, so they will come in useful. I'll also, check out the Newsletter this weekend. Got a free weekend, so I shall put it to good use! Again, thanks for the welcome. Alan16 (talk) 17:28, 20 February 2009 (UTC)

Law of the Jungle

An article need not be about a book, nor abt a single work, to carry both a Book-stub tag and a "Works by Rudyard Kipling" Cat.
As long as it is substantially abt something concerned with books, a book-stub tag is appropriate in the absence of some other stub tag that connects it to literature, or at least two stub tags that connect it to different non-literary areas that are more pertinent than literature in terms of potential for expansion.
As long as it is substantially abt something concerned with Kipling's literary output, a "Works by Rudyard Kipling" Cat is appropriate in the absence of some other Cat that connects it specifically to him, and makes it clear that the connection is not other aspects of him, such as biographical or onomastic connections to him.
In particular, a two-sentence article is a stub in the absence of a discussion (or an unanswered long-standing assertion) to the contrary on the talk page. And in any case, removal (as opposed to replacement) on a stub of the last stub tag, and removal without replacement of clarifying Cats, in each case placed in good faith, is both reckless and disruptive editing. Edits don't have to be perfect to be valuable, and they cannot be tolerated when they destroy previous progress without greater benefit.
I'm rv'g your bad edit. I expect to find time, before i forget abt it, to improve on my own tags. (That's not meant to discourage you from making a wiser further edit of your own.)

What what what what what in the world? How many novels are in this category? What is the purpose of a category, but to categorize multiple things? What is the purpose of this category, besides surreal ridiculousness? --Moni3 (talk) 17:54, 16 March 2009 (UTC)

Novels template

Hi there. I'd be interested to hear about the "all sort of problems with the converted code" if only out of curiosity. I spent quite some time on making that version work, so would like to know what you think was wrong with it. Cheers, — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 17:21, 18 March 2009 (UTC)

I didn't look too long past the host of categories that it said were missing which were present in the project but called by different names. It is quite possible that there were other things but these were enough. Can you explain the radical rework rationale and maybe there might be some future in it! :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 17:25, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Shall we hold this conversation in one place :) The gradual conversion of project banners to {{WPBannerMeta}} aims to save each project the time and effort of creating and maintaining their own banners. The code for a good banner is very complicated and it seems to make sense (to me anyway!) if this work can be done once and the benefits passed on to all projects. Of course this should never be done at the expense of functionality, and the idea is to get it working exactly as each project wants it to work, and not to force projects into a particular way of working. So this is the general theory; now for the particulars of this banner. The warnings of missing categories do look scary! The reason they are there is because there are a lot of classes (e.g. Project-class, Redirect-class, etc.) which this project may not want or need. So I didn't want to set up any categories which would not be needed. That's why I asked for input on the talk page. So, are there any other concerns? — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 18:04, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
It will take me some time to work through the implications of this change. Bear with me while I sort through it. I and others I am sure will not be adverse to the change - we do however need to understand it and ensure nothing is upset or lost. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 18:07, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
Sure, understood. I've made a few testcases to aid comparison. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 20:04, 18 March 2009 (UTC)
No time today to look at this - but first obvious thing is the "This template should be placed on Talk pages only." notice that only appears with the old form. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 10:19, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
No, that is a feature which I attempted to explain at the top of the testcases page. Setting category=no allows the template to be used an as example and so the warning and categorisation of the banner is supressed. — Martin (MSGJ · talk) 13:07, 19 March 2009 (UTC)
Ok, that sounds fine then so far anyway. Still more checking to do. :: Kevinalewis : (Talk Page)/(Desk) 13:26, 19 March 2009 (UTC)

Proposed deletion of Designated Hitter (short story)

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Designated Hitter (short story), suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Only claim to notability is Homer Award. The article HOMer Award was deleted as notability not established. This article contains very little other info and might as well be deleted.
