Titled/Entitled

I don't really understand the motivation of a recent edit you made to the Haruhi Suzumiya page. Sure, titled is just as correct as entitled, and entitled can mean something else. However I don't see how this results in "entitled being confused with titled". There is no confusion, in this context, it simply means titled. Consequently, I'm not really sure why one would feel any motivation to change the word entitled to titled. As far as I can tell, it essentially amounts to personal preference, and that's hardly grounds for a wikipedia edit of any sort. Elostirion (talk) 19:39, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

Entitle means to bestow a title upon something. This is its primary definition, and the other definitions are infrequently enough used as to potentially cause confusion when "entitled" is used as it was on the article. Basically, the usage of "entitled" in the sense "this object is called this" has not entered the general lexicon yet. This is not the first time I have made this change on pages, nor is it the first time I have edited a page specifically to make this change, but it is not something I typically go out of my way to find and correct - I simply correct it as I see it and feel like editing the page. If you'd like to talk to someone about pointlessly editing articles just to be a grammar cop, and who goes out of his way to make the change, I'd suggest you go talk to User:Giraffedata about his insistence on changing or removing "comprised of", which is what most of his edits amount to. 「ダイノガイ千？！」^{? · Talk⇒Dinoguy1000} 19:48, 14 October 2009 (UTC)

I understood that such was your motivation, however I'm not convinced that it "has not entered the general lexicon yet". Besides the fact that the first definition for entitle offered in the American Heritage dictionary is "To give a name or title to", and the first definition offered by the OED is "To furnish (a literary work, a chapter, etc.) with a heading or superscription", I can also refer (if compelled) to several articles in the press that have used entitled rather than titled. If anything, the OED suggests that the primary meaning of entitle is to give a title to a book or other literary work, and offers examples of the use of entitled in such a sense as old as Chaucer (please do look at the link). The distinction to be made, though, is between "giving a title to something" and "providing the title of something". "Entitle" is an action verb; when used, it suggests that the provided title is being given to the object in question. "Title", on the other hand, merely suggests that the title in question simply is the object's title. I think both words can really be used wither way ("he titled the book ..." vs. "the book is entitled ..."), but, at least to me, this usage of "entitle" simply doesn't sound right, and goes against how I learned to use the word. The first link you provided supports this as well, after a careful reading. Dates format

You're talking about one of the links User:Lightmouse/monobook.js/script.js adds to the toolbox, right? Unfortunately, Lightmouse's dateformat script doesn't convert ISO dates. Nope, it's even simpler. Add the following code to your monobook.js file and then clear your cache:

1. The text which has remained in this section is written (as well as my note) not by scientific style, and does not contain references to authoritative sources, however you have not paid to it attention.

2. The citing fact in a serial of films is obvious more, than that information which remained in article after your editing, however you have not paid to this attention.

3. By wiki-rules, described product itself is a source, though not the authoritative.

If I understand correctly, the information you are wanting to add draws a comparison between Black Lagoon and films, right? If this is the case, the information must have a source, otherwise it is personal synthesis and cannot be included on Wikipedia. I'll admit that the rest of the article needs cleanup, and there is plenty of other unsourced information on it already, but that does not let you add more unsourced information. I have understood your claims. After the remark from BrokenSphere I have corrected the initial text. Now this remark does not compare a serial to other films. It only specifies in the fact of citing (I hope, you not begin to deny). Citing is a distinctive sign of this serial. I consider that this information is necessary for keeping in article. For the spectator it is the obvious fact, and for the person, not looking a serial (to such person article in the wiki is intended) it gives a fuller appreciation about a serial.

Once again I pay your attention to a difference between absence of a reference to the source and the serial description, based on the serial. Perhaps you are confused with a word "reception"? I thought of reducing the remark. But a variant "In a serial are plentifully quoted of adventure films", to me has seemed, not too informative. %)))

So. 1. I am assured that the similar remark does article fuller, interesting and allocates the given serial from a number of the other. 2. I consider that the reference as I result the obvious fact in this case is not necessary, simply I describe a serial. 3. I am not sure if you have done this already, but would you consider removing the katakana middle dot from this script? The Katakana middle dot (・) is almost exclusively used in Japanese text, and your script currently treats it merely as a fullwidth interpunct (·). This tends to cause problems when your script is used to modify lists of Japanese television program episodes where the Katakana middle dot is used exclusively, replacing it wholesale with the English interpunct, making titles difficult to read within the Japanese text items (compare [4] with [5]). The katakana middle dot is not an interpunct, and there is in fact a separate halfwidth middle dot character (･). I have merely been replacing the improperly placed interpuncts as I find them, but if you could prevent this mistaken replacement in the future, this would be much better for the encyclopedia.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 06:39, 31 October 2009 (UTC)

There is no such thing as a full width interpunct. The katakana middle dot is a unique entity and is not a full width interpunct, as there is a separate half-width character to be used with half-width katakana. Aah, sorry, I forgot about this. =/ Not that I'm arguing against you, but you're the first person who has raised an issue with the katakana middot replacement, in spite of this script being advertised in a couple of places (WT:ANIME in particular). In addition, I have noticed that sometimes the katakana dot is used in place of a period (typically to represent an ellipsis), so it's probably not completely clear-cut. I'll disable the replacements for now, but I'd appreciate having input from native Japanese speakers on the issue. I don't really see the middle dots being used as an ellipsis. I just know that automatically the ellipsis is aligned with the mid line if the text is encoded in Japanese (like the following: …), which is different from "···". I can't think of any other replacements other than if you are replacing the ideographic space, and there would be the fullwidth exclamation marks and question marks if they're in the middle of statements instead of at the end, or the fullwidth ~.—Ryūlóng (竜龙) 22:26, 7 November 2009 (UTC)

Yep, that's me (and you can see more of my IP stalker numbers at User:Dinoguy1000/Vetted IP edits =) )! Basicaly, I edit Wikipedia from a variety of computers, and so I don't always feel like logging in to make an edit (or, due to the large number of userscripts I have enabled, logging in would simply result in ridiculously slow loading times (on a related note, would you care to have a look at your new messages history script to see if you could get it working on Vector?)). On the upside, this ensures that I am constantly aware of the editing experience as an IP address, but on the downside, it's not so conducive to template work, since templates are so often full- or semi-protected (not much I can do about that, though). Aah, thanks for updating that script, the absence of the history link in the messages bar has been annoying me for some time now (I've been having to use popups instead)! And, for all the scripts that actually work in Vector without any adjustment, this is one of those which most surprised me when I found out it didn't work. As for your script itself, did you ever try simply doing something like the following (keeping in mind that I'm only a beginner JS coder, so I may be making some fundamental mistake here)?

Problem is that some of us have old slow computers. And getElementsByClassName() is a very heavy function. Our javascript gurus here at Wikipedia used to warn the rest of us to avoid using getElementsByClassName(). It is not a part of the language, it is a large function in wikibits.js. And it searches through all elements on the page. While getElementById() is very efficient. So it is much more efficient to go to the nearest id which is "contentSub" in most skins, and then do some steps down to the message with the class "usermessage".

But I don't know much javascript. The two small scripts I have done is the extent of my javascript knowledge.

By the way, this is why we see to that the MediaWiki system messages each have a CSS id, not just a class, so scripts can easily find them. Oh, that reminds me, I should suggest that we add <span id="mw-newmessages"></span> to MediaWiki:Youhavenewmessages. It's actually in my to-do list. I got tons of stuff in that text file...

Aah, I didn't know getElementsByClassName() was so slow (I did know it was a wikibits.js function, though). Excel Saga

Are you still thinking of making an article for the anime specifically? I ask because I've started hacking away at the existing article, and a lot of the material could be removed from the current article more easily if there was a anime specific article. It might be a good idea to dump the previous version into a sandbox. There was too much focus on the anime in the current article, which is all the more apparent now I;m reading the manga. I have the anime dvds available to me, and the manga has a ton of translation/production notes so I can sort out plenty of production info for both versions. well, on the talk page you said you would do a little work towards it, which i've probably exaggerated :p I certainly won't be starting separate article, but there is probably enough to separate the two dependant on sources (theres plenty of production info stating that the two are very different). Serialization template solicitation

After asking Collectonian, she pointed me to you based on your track record with template code. I would like to solicit your cooperation in constructing a serialization template for manga magazines, as I originally outlined at this thread. Basically, I would like to start with something that looks similar to the template already in use at Shojo Beat, but would also like to add in capabilities for kanji/romaji for Japanese manga magazines. As well as keeping the author column, an additional illustrator column is needed, and the completed column can be left as optional. Love Hina

Firstly, I thought I'd let you know I've sent Love Hina to WP:GAN so hopefully I can move on to something else now :p I know you can't help too much with the lists or character pages, but would you be able to help me with the soundtrack list I'm sandboxing? It would be a great help to be able to split the work down, and a lot of it is template work, so you should be in your element :p It's literally copy/pasting stuff from a few pages and sticking it into the templates. Nice and easy, just monotonous to do alone :( As the tracklistings are the most complicated bit to do, I'm trying to do them before the rest of the article. It's probably best if you work on each tracklist in your userspace then move them to mine as each one is finished, otherwise I can see lots of edit conflicts :p I'll finish the Again ost, then I'll start putting in some details about each album for the ones that are done. tracklist with romaji and title translations, track lengths and writing/artist credits (all names are family name first),amazon.com listings for official english titles where available, amazon.co.jp for kanji. The winter and spring osts were bundled together in the US. I'm undecided if it should be moved to mainspace once the osts's are done, and the singles/collections added later, or if it should be left until the page is done and just needs some minor edits. WP:ACTOR and non-standard Filmographies (redux)

Hi. I just read the long thread at:

• MediaWiki talk:Common.css/Archive 9#Header color in wikitables

I've stumbled into this issue during the last few days, having worked on maybe 20 filmographies attempting to clean-up poor markup and styling.

I think the time has come to sort the issue of non-standard styling in the name of a wikiproject. The whole initiative originating there reeks of article ownership, wikiprojects as "governing" bodies, and impeding site accessibility in the name of meretricious appearance.

I think the appropriate outcome is filmographies either implemented as bog-standard wikitables, or a suite of templates/css that allow central control of the styling (i.e. to site-wide conventions).

As I said in my edit summary, it presents accessibility issues - people with certain types of colorblindness would have a hard time distinguishing the text from the background. As for the music section, I didn't remove it per se, but merged it with the franchise section, since there are only three album articles now. Please don't use your admin tools to make major or controversial changes to fully protected templates before you have obtained a consensus. Actually, the parameter has always been "day". However, the template only appeared to work because it would have been using the default value for the day parameter. You would have found that template updated on the wrong day (15th) rather than the value you set it to. I recently added extra code to the template that would cause it to give an error message if any of the compulsory parameters were missing and add the userpage to a maintainence category. Whitespace removal inside template calls

As a reply to a question of yours yesterday: The regex you are using to replace seems OK. I suppose that you using it inside normal F&R window with Regex box activated. You already wrote me that you tried it with genfixes off and with no plugins loaded. So make sure, that the two "Ignore..." checkboxes on the upper left corner are disactivated. As I said on IRC, I am using the regex on the Yu-Gi-Oh! Wikia. The pages I am using it on (such as Chthonian Polymer - basically, all transclusions of Template:CardTable2) always have at least a half-dozen such parameters, but |image= is the only one the regex chokes on, and it does so on almost every page. |image= is inside a template called "CardTable2". So if there is a problem is there. "Image" in the checkbox refers to Image:foo syntax and not to images in general.

I stopped work on the list once I exhausted Tokyopop's published volumes (they published 10 volumes, but I don't know how many of the original Japanese volumes they cover), but Cyborg 009 itself is definitely a notable series, so per WP:SPINOUT (which we use to cover all of our chapter/episode lists, as long as the main series is notable), a separate chapter list would be fine. Apparently there are no more english volumes of Cyborg 009 after vol.10. the series can obviously be notable, but it would be probably be more difficult to find the first original anime and it's remake. Most likely the second remake will be easier. And also have to figure out if the first anime, anime remake and second anime remake all have a consistent episode list. For now, i will fix the structure. the only thing i wont do is remove the voice cast, but other than that i will reformat the article in a better prose and summarized the character section.

As for Android Kikaider, i will find someone who is can find notable sources and improve the article. But luckily there is Android Kikaider (anime). I'm sure this would be easy to find too.Bread Ninja (talk) 07:44, 26 October 2010 (UTC)

Your comment on Template:Pokemon

Some articles are in the evo lines like Abra, Kadabra, and Alakazam and Koffing and Weezing because their reception fits all of them. It covers the whole line, and makes them notable as a whole. Previewing scripts/styles will actually load them so that you're truly previewing the styles or script you changed. So I don't think there's a bug report for that. 93.104.42.42 (talk) 02:24, 7 December 2010 (UTC)

Doing some quick testing, it doesn't look like that works for CSS/JS in MediaWiki skin files. Template:Deltab

User scripts should be in user .js subpages. Anyone can edit {{deltab}} at the moment, which could result in maliciousness for those users who inadvertently subst: a malicious script. Since you're the most recently active contributor (although "retired"), do you want to take the "official" copy into your userspace? (By the way, I always interpret "retired" as "gone forever". It would be better for someone to create (and maintain!) a script version of DelTab which is customizable in the same way Twinkle and Friendly's tagging system is, which would remove the need for people to subst: a copy of deltab into their .js file. Twinkle and delsort

Hey, Dinoguy. I see that you are mostly-retired now, but I was wondering about your delsort scripts. I remember that you were working on integrating deletion sorting into Twinkle, but I don't think anything ever came of it. I personally don't know anything about JS, but I do know that they are re-writing a Twinkle/friendly hybrid from scratch for MW 1.17. If you do have any scripts that might help integrate delsort into the new Twinkle, even if you aren't going to be around, WP would be very appreciative. Hey JohnnyMrNinja, as you said, I never really got anywhere on integration with Twinkle, but all my work is still accessible at User:Dinoguy1000/scripts/amdelsort.js and User:Dinoguy1000/scripts/delsort.js (the more tested of the two), and I made a point of trying to keep the original {{Deltab}} up-to-date with my improvements, too. I don't think it'd be that hard for someone with knowledge of JS and an understanding of the rewrite going on to take that work and run with it. MSU Interview

Dear Dinoguy1000,

My name is Jonathan Obar user:Jaobar, I'm a professor in the College of Communication Arts and Sciences at Michigan State University and a Teaching Fellow with the Wikimedia Foundation's Education Program. This semester I've been running a little experiment at MSU, a class where we teach students about becoming Wikipedia administrators. Not a lot is known about your community, and our students (who are fascinated by wiki-culture by the way!) want to learn how you do what you do, and why you do it. A while back I proposed this idea (the class) to the communityHERE, where it was met mainly with positive feedback. Anyhow, I'd like my students to speak with a few administrators to get a sense of admin experiences, training, motivations, likes, dislikes, etc. We were wondering if you'd be interested in speaking with one of our students.

So a few things about the interviews:

• Interviews will last between 15 and 30 minutes.
• Interviews can be conducted over skype (preferred), IRC or email. (You choose the form of communication based upon your comfort level, time, etc.)
• All interviews will be completely anonymous, meaning that you (real name and/or pseudonym) will never be identified in any of our materials, unless you give the interviewer permission to do so.
• All interviews will be completely voluntary. You are under no obligation to say yes to an interview, and can say no and stop or leave the interview at any time.
• The entire interview process is being overseen by MSU's institutional review board (ethics review). This means that all questions have been approved by the university and all students have been trained how to conduct interviews ethically and properly.

Bottom line is that we really need your help, and would really appreciate the opportunity to speak with you. {{Animanga by year category header}} will need to be update to point to Category:xxxx anime or Category:xxxx manga (with "xxxx" being the year) because all the categories are being speedily moved to the new format. Since you created this template and are more familiar with it's intricacies, will you update it so it will point to the new category locations? I don't know if the decade categories are being changed, too, but I wouldn't be surprised. Ar any of the cats on your watchlist? That's how I noticed they were being changed. Not sure how quickly you should make the change, but I would suggest pretty soon as it's a bot going through and making all the changes. Yeah, they all are. Based on the requests, it looks like only the "of [year]" categories are being renamed, and the bot's edits seem to agree. I'll have the change made in a minute, and if it happens to bother you enough, you should feel free to request the same change be made of the "of the [decade]s" categories. =)

As for the categories not being moved, most of those are actually added by {{Animanga by year category header}}, so the bot isn't doing anything wrong there. Invitation to events in June and July: bot, script, template, and Gadget makers wanted

I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. We'd love to have power users, bot maintainers and writers, and template makers at these events so we can all learn from each other and chat about what needs doing.

Hi. In the first part of your query at Template talk:Navbox#Importing to other wikis, you wrote "on several wikis without Tidy". I'd suggest specifying whether or not you mean just Wikimedia wikis (sister projects), or all Mediawikis. I assume the latter, but am not sure.
