Hi. I know that the discussion results for the suggestion of merging {{idwc}} and {{idw-commons}} into {{fdw-iw}} (aka {{fdw-commons}}) were "no consensus", but it was a pretty logical and straight-forward issue. By making sure that the new template is backwards compatible to the old ones, hopefully there won't be any issues. Requested moves that are never moved

The article is spelled wrong and is not the name of the person as it is spelled in English. You cannot move it because there is another page already as a redirect and if you ask pages to be moved mods never do it. Your edit to Template:Puf2

Do people often specify an empty "image" parameter, rather than completely omitting it, so that changing {{{image|{{{1}}}}}} to the much longer {{<includeonly>subst:</includeonly>#if:{{{image|}}}|{{{image}}}|{{{1}}}}} is worthwhile? The output for each when the template is substed is identical except for something like {{subst:puf2|example.svg|image=}}. Anomie⚔ 00:31, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

I used this coding, because when you use the 1= parameter instead of the image parameter, this would leave coding like "{{{image|Example.svg}}}", which is more difficult to read than simply "Example.svg". Another option would be to remove the 1= parameter altogether and only use |image=, but I'm not sure if it's used by scripts or if it has been the former parameter of the template, as in these cases it would be better to keep it. --The Evil IP address (talk) 13:44, 22 April 2010 (UTC)

Replaceable fair use File:Pomos idol.jpg

Thanks for tagging File:Pomos idol.jpg for deletion and notifying me on my talk page. At the time I imported it from Greek Wikipedia I believe it had little to no information, and I wasn't sure if it could be copyrighted as a photo of an ancient sculpture. However, now the Greek Wikipedia version seems to have a copyright tag on it so I think it's reasonable to conclude that it is copyrighted, and you have correctly identified it as replaceable. I haven't been able to locate a free version but I'll put out a request for one from our Cypriot compatriots. Hey, I seem to be fulfilling quite a few of your {{editprotected}} requests. You might want to check my work since you obviously have the technical knowledge but not the right to edit the pages whereas I'm the exact opposite! Hm, the error seems to be within {{Cat handler}} or {{If pagename}}, but I have a easier solution which will fix this problem for now. However, if it's decided to make use of the {{Lang}} template within DKY or In the news to make the text more readable for machines, this problem would temporarily appear again. The fix is at Template:Wikipedialang/sandbox, where I've created a /core template, which makes sure to always use the same formatting, which would also make initial editing of the template easier. There's no way of putting something on the Main Page, the only way to avoid it would be to move it out of the main space (which I'd clearly support), but this proposal has been denied several times already. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:53, 3 June 2010 (UTC)

editsemiprotected template

I noticed that you moved the editsemiprotected template with an edit summary about improving readability. Is there a community consensus for renaming templates for readability? I find the concept somewhat laughable, since a template is generally not read by our readers; it is merely written by our editors. Also, I find the new naming to be less useful for our editors, since they now need to remember not only the sequence of characters which make up the name, but also whatever arbitrary punctuation and spacing someone decided to add. (To me, this seems comparable to changing the spelling to match a preferred English variant or removing the vowels to save space.) If there was no discussion beforehand to establish a consensus, please help me understand the benefit of this change which outweighs the disruption. Well, I'd say there's pretty much a silent consensus, i.e. it's common practice to name them like that, though it's not written anywhere AFAIK (but some template moves have been discussed IIRC). But I can also explain why I moved the template. I moved it after I saw that the very similar {{Edit protected}} was moved, but that's not the only reason. I generally feel that it's easier for our newbies to read space separated words in template names. Whereas I'm perfectly fine with shortbreaks to use, I feel that the base page title of a template should use proper spelling, e.g. spaces where spaces there should be. One is used to stop reading a word after a space, otherwise you usually continue and might not immediately get the word. And once you understood the two words, you can just as easily remember them and you don't need to remember where there are spaces. The only problem in this case may be the hyphen, but I thought it to be good like that since it's spelt everywhere like that. Also, I don't think so many people (in this case) are using the template directly, most simply press the button on the edit page. But I could go with replacing the hyphen with a space, though I woulnd't like that. --The Evil IP address (talk) 10:29, 11 September 2010 (UTC)

Thanks for the thorough explanation. Having a background in software development, I have found that the answer to the question of how best to name things is very subjective and an area of strong opinions. What appears obviously better to one person may strike another person as not even being a valid option. Two practices seem to help with this: establishing an explicit standard for new work and respect the status quo for existing work. As I was trying to find an appropriate place to start a discussion to test whether a consensus exists for a standard, I found this discussion which appears to have been implemented at Wikipedia:Template_namespace#New template creation. Interestingly, Rich Farmbrough is in that discussion and I believe he is the person who inserted the space in Edit protected to which you referred. I still think respecting the status quo is a good practice, but I have to assume you weighed that against other factors as you made your decision. I guess the summary here is: never mind. While looking into this I noticed that you tried to deploy {{cat handler}} in the {{lang}} template. After some testing and staring at all version of the code I finally found the error: The code that you supplied on the talkpage of {{lang}} was correct and should have worked. It does work in the sandbox. However when HJ Mitchell copied that code to the {{lang}} template he accidentally moved the closing brackets and thus damaged the code.

That discussion has already been archived, but for future reference I left a message in the archive explaining what went wrong. See Template talk:Lang/Archive 2#Change categorization method.

Shakespeare

Please do not change the titles of Shakespeare articles without getting consensus for each article. The use of "Shakespeare" to refer to William Shakespeare is uncontroversial. There is no consistency in titles because mechanical consistency often leads to ugly phrasing. It is not necessary or useful, IMO. A previous attempt to change the title of the Portraits article was reverted by another regular Shakespeare editor, so I have restored the old title. Paul B (talk) 11:50, 20 October 2011 (UTC)

Yes, the MOS was apparently changed. It now says "The en dash in all of the compounds above is unspaced.". This discussion apparently was the deciding one, but I'm not sure, as it's very chaotic. I stopped following the discussion because it was so huge and heated I didn't have the time to follow or contribute to it. But the link you gave doesn't have any recent discussion—I was under the impression this was still being discussed quite recently. Seeing an absence of hate and hell-fire on your talk page, I am assuming your page moves are accepted (which I am very glad of), but before I put myself in the line of fire I just want to make sure I don't start a whole new round of anger. There are four more pages I felt like needed to be moved (I'm sure there are many more, these are just ones I have come across):

To be frank, I haven't even followed the discussion. I just asked and folks answered me that it was recently changed. The pages linked to should be moved, only "Canada – United States border" is currently discussed, because I couldn't move it due to its protection. China vs. People's Republic of China

The problem with renaming articles with a simple "China" instead of using PR China is that there are tow governments claiming to represent China and a large number of states have changed diplomatic affiliations over the years, see People's Republic of China – South Africa relations and Republic of China – South Africa relations as but some of the examples. Yes, with the recent update to MediaWiki 1.18, we have received support for protocol relative URLs (see documentation). Since Google supports HTTP and HTTPS for some services, we should amend the links accordingly. Film categories

Hi. Please don't remove the year/country/language cats from films articles, as you did with this and several other articles. I think it idiot-proofs the article, as most users would expect to see the category there, and not have to wonder how it is generated. Move of template

I see you moved the Template:Improve categories. I think the previous name was clear enough, and not misleading. Also, who says that "improve" means "additional"? Was there any discussion about this? I was bold to move it immediately. The word "improve" sounds more like making something better, i.e. exchaning the current categories with better ones, rather than adding new ones. The template actually says "This article needs additional categories. I happened to run across User:The Evil IP address/hdedit.js on WP:JS. I find "TODO: make buttons more aesthetically pleasing" to be a slight understatement; "SaveCancel" does not look like a button at all! I invite you to the yearly Berlin hackathon. It's 1-3 June and registration is now open. If you need financial assistance or help with visa or hotel, just mention it in the registration form.

This is the premier event for the MediaWiki and Wikimedia technical community. We'll be hacking, designing, and socialising, primarily talking about ResourceLoader and Gadgets (extending functionality with JavaScript), the switch to Lua for templates, Wikidata, and Wikimedia Labs.

Our goals for the event are to bring 100-150 people together, including lots of people who have not attended such events before. User scripts, gadgets, API use, Toolserver, Wikimedia Labs, mobile, structured data, templates -- if you are into any of these things, we want you to come!

I also thought you might want to know about other upcoming events where you can learn more about MediaWiki customization and development, how to best use the web API for bots, and various upcoming features and changes. User script list deprecation

Wikipedia's list of user scripts is in bad shape, in that it is disorganized and contains many non-working, unmaintained, or thoroughly obsolete entries. Cleanup has been on the to-do list since 2007, but little progress has been made. Instead, the whole list is now set to be deprecated on 1 May 2012, to be replaced with a new list. This draft list has been up for about a month, and in that time I've been soliciting script users and authors to come add scripts they know to be working and relevant.

If you know of scripts that you would like to survive this deprecation (and are confirmed working and relevant), you're welcome to add them to the new list. • Hey, thanks for your question. I'm not exactly sure what you want to know, can you specify your question? I'll try my best to answer your question: Most templates use CSS classes or id's that allow a customisation of their appearance. The same applies to many userpage templates. Furthermore, you can use any formatting allowed for the formatting of your userpage, which allows you to customise it to your wants. Please let me know if this answers your question. That was not exactly what I was looking for. Um, In the style attribute, we can't have pseudo elements, as far as I know. So, can we have a CSS page for us that will have the pseudo elements working properly with the WML? Next thing is, can I have it for templates as well? I want to make some graphs. Another attempt then. The pseudo-elements of CSS can be used on a .css page, and they can be restricted to certain pages through the classes of the <body> element provided (e.g. <body class="mediawiki ltr sitedir-ltr ns-3 ns-talk page-User_talk_The_Evil_IP_address skin-vector action-view">) in this case. Evolving the heading editor

The heading editor you wrote is brilliant.

Can its power be applied to other uses?

Another item besides a heading that I would love to be able to edit on-the-fly like this is a single list item within a list.

I often find myself looking at a list (either a stand alone list, or an embedded list), and spot an item I would like to change, without having to open the whole page or section in an editor (which requires scrolling to the exact location to make the edit). This would be especially useful in super long lists.

So, I was wondering, could you apply the concept of hdedit.js to doing the same thing for a list item? (li-edit.js)

In HTML, list items start with the tag <li>, and show up on the page preceded by a graphical bullet (dot).

Here are some list items:

• List item A
• List item B
• The whole line is a list item, including the bullet
  • This list item is an offspring of the one before it, the bullet represented in wikicode by two asterisks instead of one.
• Including the bullet (asterisks) in the editor is important, in case you want to change the level of the list item.
• This list item has an annotation – and this text is its annotation, which is part of the list item.
• Clicking on and editing any one of these list items would be a very convenient tool.
• Imagine a list like this several hundred items long. Finding the line to edit is a tedious and time-consuming step.
• Or an embedded list in the middle of a long section of prose. Also time-consuming getting to it in an editor.

On the view page of an article, the script has to work with the existing HTML structure, and make the connection from the HTML of a heading to its underlying wikitext. The section headings all use the class mw-headline in a span element, which contains an id that uniquely identifies the section to be edited in the API.

Example code for a section is <span class="mw-headline" id="References">References</span>

Example for an API call of all the sections of a page here https://en.wikipedia.org/w/api.php?action=parse&page=Foobar&prop=sections (the anchor matches the id)

This way, the script finds out which section to edit, can then easily retrieve the heading text. Why? Because the heading is uniquely identified by the format == Section title == at the beginning. The same with changing the section title, there's just one place the new text can be inserted into.

Such a functionality does not exist for list items (AFAIK), and as such the mapping of the HTML of a list item to the underlying wiki text is a lot more complicated, and requires a different approach. The thing that really baffles me is, how does hdedit know what you clicked on?

The script uses the onclick functionality offered by browsers (see [1] and particularly [2]).

Showing the asterisks in the edit box

The first thing that caught my eye in your list item sandbox were the multi-bulleted items. In a normal list, that usually indicates there's a typo or extra blank line or something in the list.

Which means usually, that a user will want to fix it. And so, could the list item editor show all the wikitext for the item, including the asterisks, so that the item's level can be adjusted? Catching improperly displayed list items

The second thing I noticed were the asterisks. List items with a space in front of them, don't display properly. Which means, a user will come along and want to fix it. For the LI editor to pick those up, you will then have a multi-purpose item editor on your hands. Which would be totally awesome. Handling list items that are just links

Getting back to list items themselves...

Many list items, especially on list and outline pages, contain only a link. When you hover over them, the cursor turns to the little hand, and a click takes you to the linked page. How will the user be able to click on those and get the list item editor? By clicking on the area to the left of the link, or on the bullet itself, or either?

(I noticed a link in a heading, and the heading editor starts normally if you click on another part of the heading. I imagine the same thing will apply above. Yes?).    The Transhumanist 09:24, 9 February 2018 (UTC)

What about long list items?

I installed your debug.js to test it out, and the hdedit part seemed to work fine. What is left to be done to get it to load the contents of a list item into an editing box, and what if the list item is long, like this:

So, it does scroll horizontally. That's good. But it will be awkward in LIedit to edit paragraph-long list items.

Thinking in terms of list items, there are a couple things I noticed after clicking on the heading above. First, only part of it was displayed on the screen. It would be nice to be able to read the whole list item without having to scroll. Second, when you do scroll, the save & cancel boxes disappear off the left side of the screen, forcing a scroll back to get to them.

These aren't critical issues initially. As most lists don't have super long list items. But they are things to think about for the future.

Adding preferences to hdedit.js

Hey, I liked your hdedit.js script, but one issue I had is that a single click is too easy to do unintentionally, and I personally wanted to change it to a double click. I thought I might not be the only person who wants to customize this, so I forked you and added a very simple preferences system: User:IagoQnsi/hdedit.js. If the user wants to change something about the script, they set a variable window.hdedit_prefs in their common.js file, just before they import your script. Right now the only preference is 'eventToActivate', which you can set to 'click', 'dblclick', and false to change the number of clicks required. But I was thinking it might also be cool to have a preference to add a button next to the title that can be used instead of/in addition to clicking/double-clicking the title. Here's how the preferences currently look in my common.js file:

What do you think of this? Do you like it/would you consider merging something like this into your copy of the script? • Thanks IagoQnsi, I love this suggestion! I haven't considered editing it with a double click as I personally edit pages by double-clicking them (4 eyes...). I'll be adding it to the script.
